Surveillance cameras that trigger a police alert within seconds of detecting a graffiti vandal in action are coming to Denver next month, making the city the first in the nation to test the cutting-edge spy equipment.
"Graffiti isn't unique to Denver, but I believe that Denver is in a unique place that we can help be the trailblazer in these efforts," Mayor John Hickenlooper said Wednesday.

The cameras are part of a growing use of surveillance equipment in law enforcement. The crime-fighting technology allows departments to give citizens what is otherwise nearly impossible: a cop on every corner, 2 4/7.

On Tuesday, for example, LoDo residents suggested that neighborhood bars and nightclubs be required to install cameras to deter crime after back-to-back shootings left one person dead and seven others wounded.

Hickenlooper, who used to own a brewpub in LoDo, said he was open to the idea but that it should be vetted with business owners.

"I suspect (the cameras) would cut down on the rough characters coming in," he said.

Doing a good job

Businessman Jim Hannifin, who owns Ready Temporary Services and is a member of the Colfax Business Improvement District, said several cameras installed along some of the seediest areas of the commercial corridor in 2005 have reduced crime.

"If the BID decided to take those cameras down, those property owners and businessmen up there would lynch us," he said. "They're so effective, and they've done such a good job . . . I just wish we had more money to put them up and down the street."

The Denver Police Department said Wednesday that it is difficult to quantify how much of a reduction in crime along Colfax is attributable to the cameras.

Detective Donny Moses of the Baltimore Police Department, which has about 300 cameras scattered throughout the city, said residents out there are wishing for more cameras, too.

The city of Baltimore has spent about $8 million on its surveillance camera equipment.

Moses said the city's investment is paying off. He said violent crime is down in areas of the city where it was prevalent before cameras were installed.

"Every day, we're getting citizens calling and asking, 'How can we get a camera in our neighborhood or in our block?' " he said.

The cameras will be a "powerful weapon in our anti-graffiti arsenal," police Sgt. Ernie Martinez said. "It's the wave of the future, utilizing technology to be more effective in law enforcement and catching criminals."

The American Civil Liberties Union of Colorado has raised concerns about video surveillance, saying it has the "potential to erode privacy, inhibit freedom and chill public expression in public places."

An ACLU spokeswoman did not return calls Wednesday.

But Hannifin dismissed such concerns.

"Hell, anybody walking down Colfax has no expectation of being private," he said.

'Going to get caught'

The technology was developed by a North Carolina-based surveillance equipment manufacturer that has developed security systems for nuclear facilities and NATO locations, among others.

Its undercover surveillance products range from vehicle- tracking systems to body wires.

The cameras are invaluable, said Paul Feldman, the company's president and CEO.

"If you're a tagger in the city of Denver, you're going to get caught," Feldman said.

Denver receives about 2,000 graffiti-related calls monthly and spends more than $1 million annually on graffiti removal.

"Our response has to be comprehensive," Hickenlooper said. "It has to incorporate prevention, abatement and enforcement, and there has to be a commitment to a long-term strategy."

The cameras

• The eight cordless, digital "graffiti cams" that Denver will have in operation by next month are activated by graffiti-related movement. They immediately notify police with text messages, allowing officers to catch taggers red-handed.

• The cameras, which will be installed at various graffiti "hot spots," are mobile, weather-proof and camouflaged. The department plans to put at least one in each police district and will change locations every few days.

• The graffiti cams, which the company is providing to the city for free, cost about $5,000 each.

• If the city is satisfied with the results, the company will donate the cameras to the police department after a 30-day trial run.

Whats this world coming to when we can't even vandalize our own city with out (big bother) watching us. Your right 911 we are being followed and the man is watching us. Next thing they will be putting murcury in the flu shots. oh wait you and your band of 9 rebels have already uncovered that conspiracy. I think ifyou really want to do some good you need to warn people about Bush and Chaney and the fact that they keep lighting California on fire.

Cmon Boogy... you really dont have to be so condecending all the time buddy!

your first line was funny though.

Personally, i think vandalism is the excuse to put up monitoring systems all over the place. I agree the vandalism is terrible here, but these camera's will be used for a whole lot more than catchin vandals.

Well, sorta…. I am thinking "domestic terrorists"

One nation, under surveillance

They are trying to pass the new Thought Crime Act... it passed the house and is on its way to the senate. What do you think of this bill?

It litteraly states that I am a violent criminal/terrorists.. for merely believing what I do about 9/11 - or my religious or political beliefs - Now, you all may think I am crazy, but come on! A violent domestic terrorist??!!

The other day I was listening to talk radio (I know I know) and they were talking about you 911 truth guys and they were talking about how dangerous you guys are and that you guys are getting violent when pushing your beliefs on everybody. I believe you guys take this to far ecspecially when you have someone who really doesn't care what you guys think but you feel it's ok to force feed us. Now as far as you being a domestic terrorist I don't think you are in fact I think you are probably a pretty nice guy. But on the same hand you are so passionate about this I could see you getting a little crazy too. ( I mean that in the nicest way)

no, i know boogy - no offense take to that at all. The truth is, there are some crazy people out there who take it too far. Honestly- they are givin this movement a bad name. but the "authorities" (blah) are also associating ron paul with the "domestic terrorists". and (warning to you) they are blaming the internet community for this too. they call things like myspace and other blog sites domestic terrorist training camps! LMFAO ROTF!! its a complete smear campaign to discredit those who support ron paul (and paul himelf), the so called truthers (that just want a new investigation to expose what we believe are lies...) and people like YOU who comunicate your ideas via internet. Its crazy i tell ya!

but agreed... when the media covers the truth movment (hardly ever) they pick out the crazy ones to portray the movment. for all we know, these are just shills that are in place for that very reason.

I dont mean to push beliefs on any one. I came here to post stuff that some people would not otherwise see, and let them do their own reasearch. the "pushing beliefs" comes from the violent resistance i've gotten here on fox since i started... its kinda like defense mode ya know?

Matter of fact, i created my profile here to talk smack to chris tanaka about some lame comment he made on his news cast... i got side tracked and he never got a peice of my mind :)

BTW - what kind of neo conservative talk radio crap do you listen to!!!??? :-p

Glenn Beck. I don't think it's neocon though. He is a indapendant who leans conservative and so am I. I also really like Lou Dobbs and if he ran for president I would vote for him. Iknow what you mean how anybody out there feels that the (talk Radio) is saying to much these poeple (Hillary) have no problem trying to strip people of their 1st amendment.

Just what you said before... and he's making statments and accusations about 9/11 truth... He's said that people who make claims that 9/11 may have been a false flag attack/state sponsored terror should be tasered and jailed for treason and such. I havnt kept up with it myself so i dont have details. but it sounds like he wants the truth movement to be handled with violence basically. Kinda like the Rudy supporters were when WeAreChange "welcomed" him to Loveland, CO... if you saw that blog I posted

Sorry for the video on auto play... that's kinda annoying, i gotta admit :)

Actually, i dont think i posted this - this footage was captured by another truth group in CO who also attended the Rudy event - Just listen to the promotion of voilence! (uhm... your not funny dude!)

Ok Just watched the entire video and I saw no voilence agaianst any of your people. What I did see was the 911 truthers being very aggresive and disruptive. I have to tell ya when you show stuff like that it makes your guys look crazy and out of control. What would you guys do if you were have a meeting and some conservative showed up and started yelling and making a seen. I bet the reaction would be very different.

i said the "promotion" of violence. verbal. no one was actually physical, although a supporter (or campaign guy) did punch one of the truthers in the stomach twice. doesnt show in this particular footage.

I agree that they were disruptive. I cant argue there. Part of me is ok with it simply because how much a liar Giuliani is... but the other part of me (the wiser one) wants them to improve upon this by taking a more journalistic approach in order to restore credibility and respect for the truth community.

The fact is... ANY one who is going to be an active truth seeker... MUST obey a few laws of etiquettes. The media is going to ignore them until they slip up and that 30 seconds of fame for the movement becomes a smear job...

which leads me to question why the press coverage of this even was so good. I commented on that in the blog dedicated to this rudy event
