Cold Summits: Winter Hiking

     Hiking Colorado's highest peaks in Winter is a different animal.  Snow, ice, high wind, and of course bitter cold pose significant risks.   On a recent trip to the summit of Torrey's Peak via Kelso ridge I encountered mixed conditions requiring ice axe, crampons, and a healthy dose of common sense.

 Summit temperature: 10F

Some great pics! Winter climbing has to be a whole different ballgame. So what does the winter look like down in Denver? La Nina, El Nino,what systems effect the mountains and which ones are more likely to effect the front range? Thanks

Hi VR1982 -

Looks like El Nino and La Nina are on vacation. We're forecasting a pretty normal winter across Colorado. The mountains won't see as much snow as last winter when many resorts set snowfall records. The Front Range can expect around 45 to 55 inches of total snow. There will be a couple trips below zero as well. We're not expecting "back to back" blizzards like 2006.

So far this November has been warm and dry across the Front Range. Parts (but not all) of the mountains are also dry. As we learned last year this can change quickly. December may come in like a lion.
