Matt Holliday isn’t going anywhere this season, unless the Colorado Rockies get a blockbuster deal at the deadline.

Holliday is their best player and their best poker chip. One player recently told me that fans would be outraged if the team traded Holliday later this month. Dealing Holliday would be a public relations disaster, after all of the goodwill that was built up last season. Matt Holliday

If the Rockies trade him, it’ll likely be after the season or right before next year’s deadline. The problem is—Holliday has the most trade value right now with one year left on his deal.

Unless the Rockies meet his contract demands, which the team is currently unwilling to do, other teams can lowball an offer because he’ll likely test free agency at the end of next season.

The Rockies need this guy for a number of reasons, and I think they’ll want him around for another playoff push. The Rockies have played poorly this season, but they have little or no shot next season without their best and most consistent player.

This whole thing just befuddles me. This town will financially support a winner, the Avs of old proved that with their superstar payrolls and endless sellouts. Folks LOVE to do stuff outdoors in Colorado, and a contender would draw huge crowds on a regular basis. Trust me on this.

"Their best and most consistent player." That says it all, Eric. Why would a team that wants to be a contender trade their best player? Are we that far below the poverty level?

Do we need to start talking about the, ahem, thriftiness of the Monfort Bros. already?

Don't get me wrong, Mattie also needs to understand the economics of the Rockies vs. those of the Yankees. He'll have to meet us halfway.

What he also needs to understand is that New York (and the glaring spotlight that would follow him everywhere) is NOT the kind of place he wants to raise his family.

In NY he would be another face in the crowd, only noticed by the merciless New York fans when he's slumping. Or he could stay here, and be Denver's next John Elway.

I think it's really important that we keep a perennial All-Star, for the future of the game here in the MDT zone. Maybe we can organize and demonstrate at a Rockies game, a "Please Stay Holliday Day" or something. Show him the kind of support he could be getting (if we knew for sure he isn't a baseball mercinary), and show the Monforts that this is important to us.

I heard the opinion that Willy Taveras is also "expendable". Last time I looked, Willy leads the National League in steals. How is that "expendable" on a team that wants to contend?
