This is one of those stories that's just sad.  And you have to ask yourself... what is up with people???

A Lakewood woman was visiting her neighbors last night, when one of them allegedly just up and shot her two year old terrier, Patches, in the head.

Police have arrested 50 year old Ryan Hayes and accuse him of cruelty to animals, prohibited use of a weapon and reckless endangerment.

Marlys Duggan says she and Patches visited Hayes and his mother all the time.

Last night, Patches was following Hayes around the house, hoping for a treat, when they heard a loud explosion coming from Hayes' bedroom.  She says she ran in, to find her little dog laying in a pool of blood, shot in the head.

Now Hayes tried to tell her the dog had been chewing on the gun and must have accidentally set it off.  But the Vet told her, no way.  The Vet says x rays show the bullet trajectory and the fatal shot was fired by someone standing over the dog.

Poor Duggan is pretty much in shock today, griveing for her pet.  And trying to understand how something so senseless could happen.

We knocked on Hayes' door and he told us it was an accident and that he would never harm "a fuzzy little creature."  He said he felt awful, and he did seem very upset.

Duggan says she thinks he was drunk last night.  A check of Hayes' criminal history shows some arrests back in the 80s and 90s... some involving guns and alcohol.

Say Julie, what's Ryan address? Of course if he owns the home he could be found in about 3 minutes with a title search. I sure hope no animal love wants to seek revenge...And I hope no one goes to the Lakewood P/D and get the report that is all public info and does something bad to this man....Opp's I called him a man....my bad I meant that piece of trash that deserves the same fate. Of course a bullet would be to good for him. Now an old baseball bat would be fun to watch. Not that I would do that or anything but I sure in the hell wouldn't stop it either.

It takes a big man to shoot a pet who is looking for a treat or some pets and itches. Dogs don't chew on handguns. and the question is what was the handgun left out for? and how did the dog get it?

Just so everyone is clear, if this whackjob hadn't been given access to a gun, he probably would have killed the dog with a shovel, or the heel of his boot, or even a rock.

Just so everyone is clear, blaming the gun would make about as much sense as blaming shovels, boots, or rocks.

Just so everyone is clear.

I find that people who have it in them to do things like this have a general disregard for all forms of life. They start off with animals and work their way up the food chain...

Isnt this how Jeffrey Dahmer got started?

Hey Krazzy maybe just maybe.. you were just watching him chew on the baseball bat.. yeah that's it.. and then it fell off a table and bashed him in the head.. over and over again.. yeah.. I am sure that is the way it will happen. LOL
