An interesting, if unexpected, side effect of the economic downturn:

"According to Mexican consulate officials in Dallas, some 400 immigrant families have told them so far this year that they're going back to Mexico and asked for transfer documents to enroll their children in Mexican schools.

Enrique Hubbard Urrea, Mexican consul general in Dallas, said it is impossible to track every Mexican who leaves the area. But he said the number asking for transfer documents at the consulate is on the rise.

In 2005, the consulate issued 162 such documents; in 2006 it was 199; and last year it was 270. At the current rate, more than twice as many people will leave this year as last, he said.

"There is no doubt the trend indicates that the number is growing," Mr. Hubbard said.

And it isn't happening only in Dallas. At the Mexican consulates in Chicago and Phoenix, too, the number of Mexican families applying for transfer documents for their children has increased."

I heard about this. Irony defined. It also appears that investment in Mexico has tripled this year, and new construction is at record levels.

That is why I'll be jumping the border this fall, I'm going to ply my considerable construction skills down south.

I can't wait to see how fast they change their schools to accomodate my English-speaking kids, or give me my free healthcare, or respect my "above the law" status...

Look for me next Independance Day, I'll be leading the march for immigrant rights in Mexico City.

I'll let you know how all that goes.

I read that the Mexican Consulate in Phoenix is overwhelmed with requests to re-enter Mexico LEGALLY- (these people know THEIR gov't won't put up with that nonsense the way our gov't has), and it's because in Arizona, they are actively prosecuting businesses who hire illegals.

When asked if it is creating a shortage of people to do manual labor, the response from community leaders was an overwhelming NO- there are plenty of legal immigrants, and people of all kinds of backgrounds, and students, to fill the jobs. There you have it.

is this mike who wrote this blog>

i have a question. last year schools in el paso texas districts were complaining that mex parents lived in mex but sent their children across the river to tex schools and were over whelmed. i wrote to a few districts suggesting that as most school board has rules about of 'out of district fees' that surely they also had 'out of county fees' or boards could vote to install such.

do you know if this might be the reason some families are returning to mex? thank you.
