OK, let’s get the groans outta the way. I am a MAC guy. OK there, I said it. Amazes me that there is still a separation, a rift between PC and MAC but for their part I believe Mac has revived that contempt by their ( awfully funny ) commercials with their pseudo-Gates lookin’ nerdo PC guy and the young hip feller. I’m more of a morph of both I’d say but find alot of connections between real life and those commercials. Anyway to be fair, I started my computing career in 1991 on an Amiga 2000 computer, second box was a ( shudders ) Packard Bell 50mhz PC. For my job at the time I used SGI’s ( Silicon Graphics ) Mac’s as well as NT’s so I would say - over the years I’ve had my fair share of different platforms and OS’s.

So - while I sit here writing this on a G4 Mac my PC is unloading, restarting, deleting and reinstalling software. One thing that surely hasn’t changed is how Microsoft and PC’s refer back to the Days of DOS and build their machines a little backwards. I’m NOT bashing a PC - I still prefer PC’s for some of my work, but it’s rare that I have to do a restart when installing things on my MAC - It happens, but certainly not as often as I have just in the two days of using/installing Vista.

The machine I have is a Frankenstien PC. Basically a DELL, which has its own issues. Remember when Dell’s were Swell? All my hardware checks out. Once Vista is done figuring out what the hell it wants to do in there, the machine will be an entertainment center and on occasion be used to test, build auto run CD’s and check web sites I’ve built. ( Because Windows EXPLODER sees the internet the way IT wants to and doesn’t for the most part conform to WC3 web standards - I always have to write CSS fixes,..yay! Not! ) So my expectation and requirements are low - but that doesn’t mean I don’t want a pleasant experience when installing and using this new “upgrade” that I just paid $250 American Dollars for. Oy!

Alright. I was running XP Pro. Other than your basic Office package installed, and Adobe Photoshop/Dreamweaver there wasn’t much on the machine. I started installing the 32 bit version of Vista ( a Microsoft Cert. Tech told me to avoid the 64 bit - yikes! ) around 2pm. By 8pm it was still installing. This isn’t an old PC either - 2.0 ghz, gig of ram.... so yeah,... I was thinking my machine locked up as the disclaimer on the packaging ( which in my humble opinion is where alot of the $250 price tag went ) said the “install may take several hours”. Er,...note to self. Microsoft time: Several Hours equals HALF A DAY!

I let it be. I looked online, and I wasn’t the only one who fell into the worm hole of time caused by this install. I actually went to bed, hoping that in the morning Ballmer-Claus ( Steve Ballmer Chief Executive Officer of Microsoft Corporation ) would surprise me and alas - HE DID! There was Vista, installed.

...not configured. So systematically it starts to go thru and kill my software. It hated Norton, it wasn’t compatible. I don’t blame Vista for that. Come on, Vista was supposed to be released what,... 3 years ago - it’s not like Microsoft surprised these software companies and released this under their noses. Granted, I can download patches and updates and this and that... so that’s basically what I have been doing for a DAY. Updating and deleting and reinstalling. I’d like to tell you all about my experience actually USING Vista, but I haven’t yet.

I have seen Internet Exploder ( explorer ) 7 and as a web design/development guy - it’s nice. I just wish they’d quit doing what AOL has tried to do over the years. Reformat and rewrite the internet to their specs. For those of you who don’t know... there is a web standard, and old Frontpage and the IE browser basically ignores these standards and also writes their own,...um,... stuff. So while on a Firefox, Opera, Safari, etc browsers a web page generally look the same when designed to W3C spec - it won’t look that way in IE usually. The thing that sucks, most computer users use IE - and you always have to dummy your site down, or write hacks to make it all work. BUT to the new 7 browser’s credit - it sure is pretty. Has tabs, and overall I like it. I won’t use it - but it’s nice. I went right back to using Firefox.
Other than that - I haven’t had a chance to do ANYTHING because all my time has been spent setting up the OS environment. I wanted to post this and let you all know. Bottom line is, it appears to be pretty swell and I am sure it will eventually work well. I am also sure it will be just like all previous versions of the Microsoft my day will start downloading updates, I’ll get infected, I’ll swear alot...so, nothing new. If you are considering Vista, and have an older machine,... I would just go ahead and buy a new box with Vista installed. If you thrive on your computer and you are a PC user - I would wait! Actually you have no choice...even if you buy it and install it, you have to wait! Or get a admin to install it. Best case, I would have another computer ready to work and go so you don’t have any down time - but not everyone can do that. I think overall this operating system will do well. I’m using Ultimate which was an upgrade and ran me $250. The Full Version is closer to $400! I don’t think most of you would need Ultimate. The Home Premium is what most should use. The regular Home Basic, looks pretty much like a waste. There is also a Business version. I say either Home Premium or Ultimate should be your choices. Kinda dopey to have all these different version, I’d like to think I know what I am doing and even I was baffled - standing there at CompUSA looking at boxes and saying “ Well this one has this and this and this, but this one has this and this and not that but it does have this which this doesn’t but that does yet it doesn’t have that or this! OY!!!” That’s not a good plan for consumers who still are a little overwhelmed. Again,... MAC OSX, there’s one and it does everything you need it to do. Bias? Yeah! I told ya that. ;-)

I have Vista now. I’ll work and design on my Mac mostly. And that’s pretty much that. I can only hope this gives you a little insight before you jump into the Vista world. I may update this if I ever actually get a chance to use my PC! ;-)

Thank you that is all. Over.

You are over my head in p.c. knowledge, what is the chance of this business oftaking so long {the half day} bit of 'downloading' info.

My question is can that sight 'snoop' into what you already have in your computors brain {modem} with the cyber things we have goin on now-a-days and government so snooping also into whose doin whatever. It seems to me if this machine enters info, it can also remove info???? I am just asking?
Cost wise someone is getting rich and richer.

And that thing called firefox, what is your opinion of this being adequate program. Does it just kick out all the pop-ups or do you do that yourself?

Well first, let me say that I am by no means a certified PC tech. I use ‘em cuz I’s gots to!
That said, I will share a few links and let you, and everyone, make an informed choices. I will say however that over-all with a little bit of precaution, and of course common sense everyone can have a hassle free computing experience.
First, I have been a MAC user since 1995 - on a little Mac classic with a tiny black and white screen. In all those years, I have NEVER ONCE had a virus, breech of security, hack, or even a hardware issue. No I do not own Apple Stock.
PC’s on the other hand, too many bad situations to count but that isn’t entirely some hacker-dweeb somewhere cookin’ up a diabolical scheme to ruin my PC for the fun of it. Part of the problem was my own ignorance. We first have to look at a PC for what it is. A Dumb chunk of Technology, but still Technology. Alot of people approach the PC as if it’s an appliance, like a TV or a Stereo and its so much more. I was as much to blame for my PC woes as was the dweeb. Simple precautions can indeed help.
I do prefer FIREFOX ( http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/ ) for both my PC and Mac because it doesn’t put me at AS MUCH risk as Explorer does. I stress AS MUCH there simply because nothing out there is 100% bullet proof but Firefox does a GREAT job. It does block pop up’s. It will also alert you to suspicious content, or if images in a web site aren’t originating from the web site - a popular way to either Phish ( getting users to click and enter personal info on what appears to be a familiar or legitimate web site )

Mozilla ( who offer Firefox ) also offer THUNDERBIRD ( http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/ ) for email which I also use mainly on my MAC but you can get for PC as well. As a business owner I am bound to Outlook as most of my vender’s and clients are using it or I would have it on the PC as well. Thunderbird doesn’t work with the other MS Office products. THUNDERBIRD offers things like Junk Mail filters where you can train your email program what to look out for, tho there are ways around that as well.
Bottom line is, keep your virus software up to date. Don’t open email if you don’t know the sender. Sounds like a pain,.. or do what I’ve done create multiple accounts - 1 for online shopping - 1 for signing up for stuff - 1 for friends and family and 1 for work. I have many, but check them all thru Thunderbird. If one gets sold or “indexed by a crawler” and I start getting lots of crap - I deleted it. I also run a server, for hosting my clients and my own accounts so I’ve put so many filters on my email that nothing gets thru. Actually to email me you have to verify you are a real person or why you want to contact me. I used to get 150 - 200 messages a day, and a handful were clients, business related or friends.... the rest were viagra, mortgages, and stock picks.
For more tips and info: http://www.getsafeonline.org/ - a great little web site for the average user. I know I get all technical and start speaking in tech-tongues sometime so this may help PC users. If you are just wanted to get online, get mail, do some digital photos or video and want a pleasant compu

As for your part about SNOOPING - no one can legally snoop into your system per say. Microsoft will “look” to see if you have the right components ( as do most software makers ) to see if whatever program you are installing will work but NO they can not scrub thru your system and retrieve data without a court order and access to your computer that goes deeper than a software install.
Make note tho - some web sites transmit a virus ( no reputable web site that is ) or they are sent in email as worms or trojans that install whats called a KEY STROKE LOGGER. Also some companies install these to monitor employees. Basically what it does is “records” your typing. Not just instant messages but email, URL’s ( web addresses ) word doc’s, everything and then “ phones home” the info to who ever processes it.
Also some software will alert the manufacturer that you are installing it. On the MAC I have a program called “Little Snitch” that alerts me to this. Mainly, I just don’t want anyone anywhere knowing what tools I use, how I use them etc.
So - unless you are into an illegal activity - and already under suspicion or surveillance I would say you have nothing to worry about, as far as Microsoft or anyone else for that matter looking thru your system. Just make sure your home network is secure is you have one and password protect your computer, even your files if you can and know how. Again - there are people out there who are EDIT and will try to get into your computer for your info, and then there are people out there who let them by not taking basic steps to protect themsel

protect themselves. Always hope for the best, but assume the worst when it comes to using your computer. Sad but true. Good luck.

Sorry - they don't give you enough room to leave a message. I hope all this mumbo jumbo makes sense.

Snooping is a concern,

Just get a Wireless Router, these days its a Gband.
This will give you a firewall between your system and your modem for less than 50 bucks if you find it on sale.

Max,

Corprate Norton, if you can afford it.
Is it a good buy for a business.

And also, will the wireless router in your opine do what I was told it would, basicly put a firewall between me and my comcast modem.

It's AWESOME actually! heehee! Or wait,... how much. DAMN!

Seriously - I had no choice after I installed Vista I had to remove ( with a Norton tool ) and then re-download Norton - but well worth the expense. Now on my MAC - don't laugh - to be safe I have ClamXav running. It is an open source tool and I am a huge supporter of open source. Drop by http://www.timberlinegroup.com/max - I have some open source links. I'm sure people would love open source alternatives to paying high $$$ for software. ClamXav is free, and alot of people havent heard of Open Office - a free open source version of Office. Hey free beats $500 plus for Office 2007. Have a look but yes - run with Norton Corp. McAffe too. Any protection is better that none. And get a Wireless G but for the love of god people, secure your wifi.

Think MAC-Mini! Not only will the wife think it's "cute" you'll get a nice little machine there. Also, with a cheap adaptor you should be able to use any existing monitor you may have ( altho the 20 inch widescreen ROCK! - or even the 30 inch! ) you could add MacTV to that set up and have a full entertainment center - which is my next nerd project! :-)

Thanx on the jeep comment - now that its close to being paid off, I can roll it. ;-) I soooo wanna get into welding! We should chat!!! See people, the stereo type is wrong!!! Us nerds get out once in a while!! Not all nerds live in their mom's basement. Well, I used to live in my mother-in-law's basement but that's besides the point!

Anyway, yeah I've done all that and would be happy to shoot the preverbial poo with you.

Learn how to tig weld, it's a little harder but what you have to know to make a chrome-aly roll cage and a tip-bar. Not to mention it's good knowledge to carry out to Moab, jeep week.
I've made alot of money out there in my time.

Greetings, Salutations, and Shalom. I was always told as a child, by my family, that one day I would be somebody. I wish they had been more specific. Hello fellow earthlings, I am Max and I say/do alot of stuff. I run a creative digital media company, with Open Source ties. I’m an avid Jeeper which always gets my granola eatin’ friends khaki’s in a bunch and I am pretty much not in compliance with most things. Generally speaking if my opinion is different than the masses I know I’m doing something right. I do try to be respectful, and do a little research before shooting off my mouth, and at least try to see everyone’s point of view. Sometimes there’s a knee-jerk reaction. Can’t help it - tend to be human. I’m certainly not a no-it-all and I have no problem with being proven wrong. I love the lord, I just don’t trust his people. I also believe everyone deserves a chance to show their true colors. I thrive on satire, parody and laughing at myself when I can. I’m no better than anyone else on this board, I just admit to it. Hope to shoot the proverbial with you all at some point. Thank you that is all,...over. -maxi
