Scribe-ls

The new yard is a squirrel haven, despite an active 20-pound cat and a tireless Chesapeake Bay retriever.  It could be that the massive elm in the back combined with all the lesser trees in our yard and two adjacent create an irresistably lush urban micro-forest right here in Arvada.  It promises to be a stunningly beautiful summer, for sure.

The squirrel-world is splendid.  As my husband and I sip our coffee or wine we are secret observers of a whole squirrel society via a wall of windows across the back of our house.  They're amazing little creatures, really.   Their industry in gathering food and nesting materials is upstaged only by their exuberance in life.  Oh, for sure, some of the behavior is mating or territory related, yet I've never seen squirrels actually hurt each other.  Even territory, once established, seems to be an informal point.  There aren't outcasts among squirrels.  The brawny brute who chased the scrawny upstart from the elm to the crabapple this morning will surely be playing a fine game of round-the-elm with him this afternoon.

Why, the squirrels seem even to enjoy the aforementioned cat and dog, as well as their less robust senior counterparts.  It could be anthropomorphism on my part, but I would place money on it that there are times when one or the other of the bushy-tailed imps performs elaborate antics to attract the notice of the household pets.  A little golden-belly will sit atop the peak of the neighbor's shed, stare into the back of the house, run across the chain link about 5 yards, sit, switch the tail about a bit, and run back to the shed over and over until one or all the pets are enticed to go out and give a bit of harmless chase.  At that point the little rascal zips under their very noses across the yard and up the elm, just out of reach.  The play provides hours of entertainment for the Chessie.  The three others become bored after a half hour or so, but the Chessie will wear herself stupid 'playing squirrel.'

Funny, though, I often find myself reflecting that there are many squirrel-like people:  good natured, fun-loving and simply happy with being.  We need more of those, myself included.

Nope, I get a little worked up now and then, but truly being offended is something rare in my world. People's right to their own opinion is inalienable and there is always a story behind what people think and feel. I might try to exert a little influence by providing what I hope inspires thought, but after all, we all have our own collage of experiences that has led us to our place of mind.

I'm so upset about the plague "thing" going on right now! I love the squirrels around where I live. I even hand feed them peanuts! It's so upsetting to think that they might die because of those nasty fleas! I hope people realize that it's the fleas and not the sqirrels! God bless 'em!

I too love the squirrels. This plague thing is so sad! I also have three different squirrels I hand feed. One even comes in my house when I leave the door open to get something for them to eat. This same one will come running like a dog that's happy to see you when he see's me come out the door! Poor little squirrels!

My little buddies want to come in my house, but I have a pet rabbit so they're not allowed. It's hilarious trying to discipline a wild squirrel! God bless 'em! :)

You should have seen my husband at our last house, which had a good-sized irrigation ditch running through it. One day a squirrel took a bad fall off a cottonwood onto a privacy fence and was hurt. Hubby picked up the squirrel in a rag, but the little squirm escaped, limped across the driveway and...into the ditch which was flowing pretty well that day. Naturally, I was all but hysterical at the notion of the little fuzzball drowning and used a leafy branch to keep him from washing downstream. Hubby, being quite the tenderheart very quickly rigged a rope to a stick, lassoed the squirrel and after much ado by the squirrel, hauled the "squirrel on a stick" out of the ditch. We nursed the poor little urchin, dubbed Snickers, with water, various foods and even a touch of rum for his cough, for days. He wasn't very grateful, though, biting Hubby more than once during care. The rum must have helped because one day we came home and found that Snickers had chewed his way out of the wire cage and gone back to the wild. Long live Snickers!
