I have to grit my teeth every time some yuppie blathers about how everyone needs to be environmentally responsible and go get a more gas-efficient vehicle.  Wouldn't it be nice if we could all just up and be so selfless.  Last time I checked, most people are in hock up to their necks paying for their cars (I am) and the notion of suddenly hitting the local dealership to get a Yaris or SmartCar to conserve gas inspires hysterical giggles.

I'm almost two years into my car, an Aztek, a cross-over by Pontiac.  That means I am most likely upside down in it, which is fine as I know it'll all catch up in the end.  I bought it to meet my transportation needs, not as an investment and am very pleased with it to date.  It's big enough to be comfortable (I'm not petite, but certainly not as big as they come either) for me and my dogs and all the gear to make a weekend in Hartsel pleasant, or a couple weeks' groceries and all the other Saturday errands-stuff.  It's not the hugest thing out there (I think that's the Tahoe or maybe a Humvee).  I've checked the gas mileage, which is about 22 mpg, mixed, and that is after resorting to "regular unleaded" with the recent price escalations.

Essentially, buying a new gas-miser car is going to cost me lots more than simply keeping what I've got and being even more thoughtful of how much I drive.  The payments will be higher than what I've got now, if I could scratch up the ridiculous cash they want for a down payment.  Additionally, insurance will likely be more because while the Aztek is a sturdy vehicle with no pretensions of zippiness, therefore a lesser risk profile, these little Minis, Yarises and SmartCars crumple if you sneeze at them and inspire traffic-darting (uh huh, I've seen it!).  Would I like a car that gets 40 mpg?  Sure, if I can keep my Aztek for real stuff and use the littly for the 10-mile daily commute (round trip) and maybe zippadeedoos down to Texas or up to Wyoming to satisfy the gadabout urge.  Realistically, though, with our budget, one car each is it, and we're grateful for that, so it isn't going to happen.

At any rate, the trust-fund-fed utopianists can make their suggestions all they want, but I'll keep on keeping on without guilt.  I have a good car kept in good tune, I manage my driving carefully and once in a while enjoy a little outing.  How far do THEY drive to and from their plastic offices each day?

Oh, gosh- we have so many of those self-righteous trust-babies in our neighborhood! I gave my son my '00 Pathfinder last year when he started driving, and bought a ten year old Accord V-6 because I want to have a little fun car for once, not a "mommy car", and I can't afford a new car, anyway, and they look at it and say, "ohhhhh, I see...., well, our new Mercedes eco-wagon just suits our lifestyle! Gag! And I say, "Oh, yes, that will get you to bookclub so nicely- I'll watch your kids and take them to the pool and feed them the only homecooked meal they'll have today, K-? Does your purebred dog need to go out sometime this weekend? Do they all need to stay overnight while you and your husband dine at Rolling Hills? Oh, and my husband will get them ready for their baseball game tomorrow, and take them to the batting cages." They tell me what a "Peach" I am and scamper off to save the world, one irony at a time.

Oh, and I forgot- my teenage son will watch your kids after school while you work to afford Botox shots and boob jobs, and he'll take them to their dancing lessons and their riding lessons and help them with their homework and teach them how to get along with others, knowing I'm home for backup- yes, he's a peach. too. And your new Mercedes will look new for a really long time, and of course it won't use much gas because your kids are always in my old beaters! Oooh- guess you touched a nerve, Scribe! I'm the lucky one, you know, but their superior attitude ticks me off. And I think you have a really nice car!

Thank you Raysmom. It is a really nice car. It was built with women in mind, or maybe by women, it's so sensible.

I am LMAO about your response. It's hysterically sardonic. Boy oh boy you tell it like it is. I wish I were a songwriter because that is blues waitin' to happen. Peach's Blues. Well, there's a title...maybe we can get Frosty to write a song...

I truly enjoy honking and waving as I pass those in their wonderful "smart cars" up the mountain! My ecologically incorrect 2006 Dodge Ram diesel gets 21 mpg whether I drive 7 or 70 mph. I think thats good enough.

I just got back here, Scribe- there have been so many threads lately that I lose track!

Thank you for the kudos- I really got my dander up, didn't I?

Frosty is such a word-meister!

I don't see why the yuppy ones gripe anyways about what someone else is driving. They are the one paying for other peoples gas. I think we should all get to drive what type of car or pickup we want to drive. They should mind their own business. I have a 2005 Ford F-150 and it's good enough for us.

Yeppers, itsazoo. Nothing is more irritating than all the so-called do-gooders who think they know the best for and better than everyone else. I'm all for adjusting lifestyle when it's clearly the right choice, but this lemming-like leaping off trendy cliffs into the latest social fads is just another example of the greater mindlessness that got us into our current predicaments. There's lots to be said for holding steady and taking the time to see what falls out of the solute before arriving at a conclusion.

Well they say in a couple years there going to make everyone get a so smartcar and hybird and all those so called wonderful cars out there. I live off pay check after pay check and cant afford a new car. I love my little pathfinder, but is it the "cars" that are destoring the environment like the yuppies are saying? Or is it from mowing your lawns, lighting your grills? Everytime these people have something to complain about it effects the ones that cant afford it and Im getting real sick of it.
