The Little Angel on the Top of the Christmas Tree!

One particular Christmas season a long time ago, Santa was getting ready for his annual trip but there were problems everywhere. Four of his elves got sick, and the trainee elves did not produce the toys as fast as the regular ones so Santa was beginning to feel the pressure of being behind schedule. Then Mrs. Claus told Santa that her Mom was coming to visit; this stressed Santa even more.

When he went to harness the reindeer, he found that three of them were about to give birth and two had jumped the fence and were out at heaven knows where. More stress.

Then when he began to load the sleigh one of the boards cracked and the toy bag fell to the ground and scattered the toys. So, frustrated, Santa went into the house for a cup of coffee and a shot of whiskey. When he went to the cupboard, he discovered that the elves had hid the liquor and there was nothing to drink.

In his frustration, he accidentally dropped the coffeepot and it broke into hundreds of little pieces all over the kitchen floor. He went to get the broom and found that mice had eaten the straw it was made of. Just then the doorbell rang and Santa cussed on his way to the door. He opened the door and there was a little angel with a great big Christmas tree.

The angel said, very cheerfully, "Merry Christmas Santa. Isn't it just a lovely day? I have a beautiful tree for you. Isn't it just a lovely tree? Where would you like me to stick it?

Thus began the tradition of the little angel on top of the tree.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick won't reveal if she voted to oust fellow Congressman John Dingell from a key leadership post, despite claims she did so as payback for him calling on her son to resign as mayor.

Her offices were flooded Friday by upset callers accusing Kilpatrick of contributing to Dingell's removal as House Energy and Commerce Committee chairman. Detroit radio shows -- one of which called her "Delilah" -- urged listeners to call the congresswoman's offices in protest. Dingell lost control over the committee that sets automobile policy by a secret 137-122 vote Thursday.

"Only the congresswoman knows how she voted," said Keirana Barrett, a Kilpatrick aide. "We wanted people to understand the process. This is a secret process."

The callers aren't alone in thinking Kilpatrick sabotaged Dingell.

Mary Waters, one of Kilpatrick's two unsuccessful primary challengers, sent out a statement Thursday calling the congresswoman "a vindictive Trojan horse" whose "selfishness has caused irreparable harm to the people of Michigan." Waters plans to campaign against Kilpatrick again in 2010.

Michigan's other House Democrats openly supported Dingell and encouraged fellow Democrats to keep him as chairman over Henry Waxman, a Californian who has long advocated higher fuel economy standards for the auto industry.

A whip team trying to build support for Dingell wanted to send out a letter to all House members showing united support in Dingell's home state delegation, but couldn't because of Kilpatrick's publicly neutral stance.

The vote was close, and Dingell would have won if eight votes had gone his way instead of to Waxman.

"Who knows whether she could have made the difference, but obviously she wasn't helpful," says Larry Sabato, a politics expert at the University of Virginia.

"It is conceivable. And one would assume that some people will seek revenge in 2010. She was almost defeated this year, and payback is hell."

Dingell contributed $1,000 to Kilpatrick on July 30, while she faced a primary challenge from Waters and others. After the election, on Aug. 14, Dingell called on her son, then-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, to resign because of the text-message scandal and new allegations he shoved two court officers.

"Once again, Carolyn Kilpatrick is allowing her personal feelings to get in the way of taking care of business, both for the 13th Congressional District and the state of Michigan," said Waters. "It was important to have Congressman Dingell chair the Energy and Commerce Committee. And she undermined him."

Kilpatrick didn't return phone calls seeking comment, but she issued a statement saying she's committed to Michigan.

"I have and will always vote in the best interests of the constituents of Michigan's 13th Congressional District and the citizens of the State of Michigan.

"As the only appropriator from the State of Michigan, I am committed to advocating for health care and environmental justice for all Americans," the statement concludes.

Is it just me or do others wish they would drop a house on her?

 I had this idea that I was going to rope a deer, put it in a stall, feed it
 up on corn for a couple of weeks, then kill it and eat it.
 
The first step in this adventure was getting a deer. I figured that, since
 they congregate at my cattle feeder and do not seem to have much fear of me
 when we are there (a bold one will sometimes come right up and sniff at the
 bags of feed while I am in the back of the truck not 4 feet away), it should
 not be difficult to rope one, get up to it and toss a bag over its head (to
 calm it down) then hog tie it and transport it home.
 
I filled the cattle feeder then hid down at the end with my rope.
 
The cattle, having seen the roping thing before, stayed well back. They were
 not having any of it.
 
After about 20 minutes, my deer showed up -- 3 of them. I picked out.. ..a
 likely looking one, stepped out from the end of the feeder, and threw.. .my
 rope. The deer just stood there and stared at me.
 
I wrapped the rope around my waist and twisted the end so I would have a
 good hold. The deer still just stood and stared at me, but you could tell it
 was mildly concerned about the whole rope situation.
 
I took a step towards it...it took a step away. I put a little tension on
 the rope and then received an education.
 
The first thing that I learned is that, while a deer may just stand there
 looking at you funny while you rope it, they are spurred to action when you
 start pulling on that rope.
 
That deer EXPLODED.
 
The second thing I learned is that pound for pound, a deer is a LOT stronger
 than a cow or a colt. A cow or a c olt in that weight range I could fight
 down with a rope and with some dignity.
 
A deer-- no chance.
 
That thing ran and bucked and twisted and pulled. There was no controlling
 it and certainly no getting close to it. As it jerked me off my feet and
 started dragging me across the ground, it occurred to me that having a deer
 on a rope was not nearly as good an idea as I had originally imagined.
 
The only up side is that they do not have as much stamina as many other
 animals.
 
A brief 10 minutes later, it was tired and not nearly as quick to jerk me
 off my feet and drag me when I managed to get up. It took me a few minutes
 to realize this, since I was mostly blinded by the blood flowing out of the
 big gash in my head. At that point, I had lost my taste for corn-fed
 venison. I just wanted to get that devil creature off the end of that rope.
 
I fig ured if I just let it go with the rope hanging around its neck, it
 would likely die slow and painfully somewhere.
 
At the time, there was no love at all between me and that deer. At that
 moment, I hated the thing, and I would venture a guess that the feeling was
 mutual.
 
Despite the gash in my head and the several large knots where I had cleverly
 arrested the deer's momentum by bracing my head against various large rocks
 as it dragged me across the ground, I could still think clearly enough to
 recognize that there was a small chance that I shared some tiny amount of
 responsibility for the situation we were in, so I didn't want the deer to
 have to suffer a slow death, so I managed to get it lined back up in between
 my truck and the feeder - a little trap I had set before hand...kind of like
 a squeeze chute.
 
I got it to back in there and I started moving up s o I could get my rope
 back.
 
Did you know that deer bite? They do! I never in a million years would have
 thought that a deer would bite somebody, so I was very surprised when I
 reached up there to grab that rope and the deer grabbed hold of my wrist.
 
Now, when a deer bites you, it is not like being bit by a horse where they
 just bite you and then let go. A deer bites you and shakes its head --almost
 
like a pit bull. They bite HARD and it hurts.
 
The proper thing to do when a deer bites you is probably to freeze and draw
 back slowly. I tried screaming and shaking instead. My method was
 ineffective.
 
It seems like the deer was biting and shaking for several minutes, but it
 was likely only several seconds.
 
I, being smarter than a deer (though you may be questioning that claim by
 now) tricked it.
 
While I kept it busy tearing the tendons out of my right arm, I reached up
 with my left hand and pulled that rope loose. That was when I got my final
> lesson in deer behavior for the day.
 
Deer will strike at you with their front feet. They rear right up on their
 back feet and strike right about head and shoulder level, and their hooves
 are surprisingly sharp.
 
I learned a long time ago that, when an animal -- like a horse --strikes at
 you with their hooves and you can't get away easily, the best thing to do is
 try to make a loud noise and make an aggressive move towards the animal.
 This will usually cause them to back down a bit so you can escape.
 
This was not a horse. This was a deer, so obviously, such trickery would not
 work. In the course of a millisecond, I devised a different strategy.
 
I screamed like a woman and tried to turn and run.
 
The reason I had always been told NOT to try to turn and run fro m a horse
 that paws at you is that there is a good chance that it will hit you in the
 back of the head.
 
Deer may not be so different from horses after all, besides being twice as
 strong and 3 times as evil, because the second I turned to run , it hit me
 right in the back of the head and knocked me down.
 
Now, when a deer paws at you and knocks you down, it does not immediately
 leave. I suspect it does not recognize that the danger has passed. What they
 do instead is paw your back and jump up and down on you while you are laying
 there crying like a little girl and covering your head.
 
I finally managed to crawl under the truck and the deer went away.
 
So now I know why when people go deer hunting they bring a rifle with a scope to sort of even the odds.

15-year-old hit twice crossing Nine Mile in Warren

WARREN -- Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who slammed into a 15-year-old pedestrian Friday afternoon, knocking the girl into another oncoming vehicle before fleeing the scene.

The incident, which left the girl in critical condition, happened about 5:30 p.m. when the pedestrian was crossing Nine Mile Road at Van EDIT.

"Two vehicles hit her," said Warren Det. Randall Ricotta. "One was headed eastbound on Nine Mile; that vehicle struck her and threw her into a second vehicle, which was headed westbound. The driver of the westbound vehicle stopped; the other driver did not."

The motorist who stopped told investigators the other car may have been a minivan, although further details were fuzzy, Ricotta said.

"Driver No. 2 didn't get a real good look at the other driver, so we don't know if it was a male or female," the detective said. "We'll look at the physical evidence at the scene to see if we can get further details."

The girl was being treated in Children's Hospital, Ricotta said. She originally was taken to Bi-County Hospital in Warren, and later transferred because of the extend of her injuries, Ricotta said.

NWA plane, luggage tug collide at Detroit Metro Airport

ROMULUS -- A Delta Airlines luggage tug hit the wing of a Northwest Airlines jet this morning at Detroit Metropolitan Airport, sending the driver of the hauler to the hospital.

The plane had arrived from Grand Rapids about 6 a.m., airport spokesman Michael Conway said. The plane was on a ramp headed to a gate at the MacNamara Terminal so the passengers could disembark.

There were 21 passengers and a three-person crew on the plane, which was being operated by Mesaba, a Northwest sister company, Conway said.

Shuttles took the passengers to safety, Conway said.

The incident remains under investigation.

Palin Blames Bush for Election Loss

(Nov. 10) -- Why did the Republicans lose the presidential election? Sarah Palin, the party's vice presidential candidate, lays the blame at the feet of the Bush administration. In an interview with the Anchorage Daily News and KTUU Channel 2, Palin says, " I think the Republican ticket represented too much of the status quo, too much of what had gone on in these last eight years ... So people desiring change I think went as far from the administration that is presently seated as they could. It's amazing that we did as well as we did." During the interview, which was conducted in her home in Wasilla, she described the "amazing" experience of running for vice president and took issue with "misinformation" that surfaced about her during the campaign.
