Pregnant Marine Missing From N.C. Base

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. — A 20-year-old pregnant Marine who was expected to testify about something she witnessed on base has been missing since mid-December, authorities said.

The Marine Corps said Wednesday it is cooperating fully with the Onslow County Sheriff's Office in the disappearance of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, who is about eight months pregnant.

The sheriff's office has said Lauterbach's mother reported that her daughter was supposed to testify about an on-base incident. What Lance Cpl. Lauterbach was supposed to testify about or any details regarding the court case have been censored from the media by unknown powers that be.

"There are several findings and pieces of evidence that have been discovered that cause law enforcement to be concerned with the circumstances surrounding Maria's disappearance," the sheriff's department said in a statement.

Sheriff's investigators did not return calls seeking additional comment Wednesday, and it was not clear what Lauterbach was expected to say in testimony.

The State Bureau of Investigation also is working on the case. Marine Corps and Navy investigators are cooperating with the investigation, said First Lt. Richard Ulsh, a spokesman with the 2nd Marine Logistics Group.

Authorities say Lauterbach, originally from Dayton, Ohio, was reported missing Dec. 19 by her mother, who last spoke with her daughter on Dec. 13. Her cell phone was found Dec. 20 near the main gate at Camp Lejeune.

Lauterbach's mother, Mary Lauterbach, told the Dayton Daily News on Wednesday that her family is concerned because it is out of character for her daughter not to stay in touch.

"There has been a deafening silence," she said.

Maria Lauterbach is assigned to the 2nd Marine Logistics Group of the II Marine Expeditionary Force. Camp Lejeune officials said she joined the Marine Corps in June 2006 and was trained as a personnel clerk.

She was 8 months pregnant, she did not disappear. She obviously was killed to shut her up.

Jacksonville NC & Camp Lejeune have plenty of places where a body would never be found.. Lejeune has vast areas of marshes, ocean, grass land & forests.

I'm betting there are people out there who believe she had witnessed some kind scenario that would discredit the marines in general. I can just see the rumors and conspiracy theories flying all over the blogs and message boards of the anti-war crowds.

My thoughts exactly *j darrowin* ... a simple post with no personal remark by the poster means what? I dunno what TT has in mind here ... My natural suspicion though is he may think a Ron Paul Presidency would not let this happen ... oh yeah I forgot, Ron Paul is not a military man. Now I really don't know, LMAO

The reason I posted this ... well there were two reasons really: 1. It's a missing person and people should be made aware that she was missing. 2. The fact that a possible motive for the case, that she was set to testify in court on alleged rape charges, was being withheld to the press.

I became more infuriated as I followed this story, although I didn't post further on it, I did keep up with the case. On the second day of the investigation, an investigation that was started 3 weeks late by the way, the Sheriff was trying to discredit the victim by saying she needs to turn herself in and seek help for her mental condition and many other sources were saying she was a habitual liar. So they print this false story in the paper the next day saying she's a habitual liar which I believe discredits the victim and would definitely hinder a Nationwide search for the victim. Of course on the 3rd day the killer confessed to the murder and they found her body. All I have to say is thank god the killer confessed because motions were already being taken to sweep it under the rug.

To me it's yet another example of corruption in America, that a Sheriff's investigation is willing to sweep things under the rug to protect people so much that even rape and murder of an 8 month pregnant Marine doesn't phase them. I hope the Sheriff of Onslow County North Carolina looks like the ass that he is to the rest of the world for trying to sweep this victim under the carpet.
