Its a real sad day in Amrica when a person cannot afford meds on a fixed income. Our story....

About 10 years ago my hubby had 5 discs in his back fused L1 thru 5, needless to say this rendered him unable to work, we were at the mercy of workmans comp, and he had NO CHOICE but to elect to undergo back surgery. Now mind you he is in constant pain ALWAYS. Now he is on Social Security disability, which isnt enough for us to live on.but we manage. Well through the years he has been on many different pain meds. Well through the ordeal of his dad passing, he had the doc write him a script, so when he needed a refill, he could get it. Now doc put him on a new time released pain med......it was helping....finally something that actually worked! Well it came time to refill his med..he goes to Walgreens, they wanted $600.00 for 60 pills!!!!! Said his benefits had expired, he used up all his med benefits!! At this point only 6 months had been used...so what is he to do for the rest of the year? Evidently suffer, Aside from the fact this med will eat up 1/2 of his SSD check every month!

Now because he is at the max limit of SSD, because when he was working, he made a really good living, I do not qualify for any benefits, nor does he..for example..No food stamps for us we earn to much! I cannot get ANY medical insurance, nor attention..because He earns to much! He recieves nothing for me being his WIFE and DEPENDANT of 27 years...yet I HAVE to disclose his income for any kind of assistance, only to be told...HE EARNS TO MUCH!

Now I ask you...who can survive on $1500.00 a month, when your meds that help your pain.....COST $600.00 a month? I Imagine pretty soon we will be on the street...lose our home that we have by the GRACE of GOD been able to hold on too for the past 18 yrs. And become a headache to society. This has never been our intention, as we are hardworking God fearing Americans! $600 bucks a month for meds is LUDICRIS! Along with immoral! And mind you thats just 1 script...he also needs his heart meds!

So what party is REALLY going to help the elderly, and the truly disabled? Please I would like to know.

I totally sympathized with you Twizled BUT WITH US IS THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE......my husband's back IS SHOT....talk about 7 herniated disc, degenerative discs, bulding, arthritis..well..you name it he has it..the prognosis of surgery IS OUT OF THE QUESTIONS, AS THERE'S A 80 % CHANCE HE WOULD BE DISABLED..however, we do have GREAT COVERAGE AND I HAVE TO FIGHT TO GET BRAND.BECAUSE MOST DR'S AND PHARMACIST RATHER GIVE OUT GENERICS.....GOD BLESS...

Twiz, have you asked your pharmacist(s) about the drug programs that ALL drug manufacturer's have? The makers of ALL pharmaceuticals, especially the more costly ones, ALL have programs for people who make "too much" to qualify for public assistance, don't have insurance, their insurance falls short, are financially strapped BECAUSE of their medication needs, etc. ALL PHARMACIST'S know about this! Ask someone!

(This I am sure will be a two part answer, however I have to wait to see what post's first to know where to continue from)

Twizlled, I am so sorry to hear about your husband's back. There is a couple of things that can be done. It's been a little while since I've been in the medical field, however, if he hasn't already applied for Medical Medicaid benefits, you should do so as soon as possible. You can go to www.myflorida.com/accessflorida to complete an application on line. With your husband on SSI and with your not being able to find a job at this time, you may be able to qualify for assistance with your telephone service, food stamps if needed, and/or for your husband what would be most important is Medicaid being a Secondary insurance if he has Medicare or if not, then Medicaid as primary insurance. When you complete the application, print each page or section as you complete it and then "send whatever they are requesting via certified return receipt." If your husband is on Medicare for disability, also write a letter to the Medicaid office asking how your husband can qualify for the Q&B Program (I think that's what it still is called for the prescription and Medicare monthly premium assistance). Also call the Medicare office and ask the same. They should be able to point you in the right direction. If he should qualify for this program, then his medication may go from $ 600 a month down to below $ 50 possibly even lower, even if he is on a prescription program through Medicare. If he qualifies, they may even determine he should have been on it a while ago and r

Buy offline from India. Cost for their generics is 10%-20% of what you pay here. Don't listen to that line of crap from the FDA about them being unsafe. Just do a bit of research and deal with a reputable company. The "Fat Cats" are making a killing off of free trade, why should we not benefit as well?

cont'd (hopefully it all comes thru now)

refund you overpayments that may be due. The other route you may try to take is by going to the hospital to where he had the surgery done, let them know you are struggling to afford the meds, see if you can qualify to get help through the hospital pharmacy, some times that can be done as well, they will also send you to the pharmaceutical companies that may be able to help as well. Let me know how it goes, there is a way to get him help, so I wish you the best of luck.

yes robin if he makes the top ssd payment he makes to much money for state aid to be qb program he would have to get less than a 1000 a month for both people and the social security office does that and that includes foodstamps thats why i said my share the cost was 1554 before medicade will pay a penny if you get 1700 a month they alow you 200 hundred a month to live on

David, that just makes me sick that you have to struggle like that. I think about the way this country wastes money, gives money away to other countries, "experiments" on useless endeavors, and seemingly forgets about our own people right here. I hope you and Twiz get some relief. I'll remember you in my prayers.

It is definitely sad that assistance is not where it's supposed to be. I hate to say it, but it even though taxes are higher when a Democrat is in office, it "seems" the assistance is much better for those who need it, but unfortunately opens the door wide open to more fraud abuse for those who don't. The worst thing that happened was the changes in the prescription program for those who are on Medicare, disability and retirement. What the Government is trying to do is to force everyone to go on a Medicare supplement program which includes the prescription assistance needed. There's a reason for that, but it's too long to go into here. So Twizlled, if your husband is on Medicare, and money is tight, he may want to see if he would qualify for an HMO replacement program. That will definitely put money back in your pocket. Otherwise, check the hospital pharmacy where he had the surgery at and see what programs are available, programs are there, you just have to dig.

No matter if you love him or hate him check out Micheal Moore's "Sicko". If nothing else it will make you stop and think about the sad state of private health care in this country. We can do better.

info.

I saw the movie and was totally outraged, I agree we can do so much better, but there are always pros and cons to all situations. And i wonder if the cons would be worth it...

I'm just a United States citizen, wondering what the heck is going on these days, and looking to find some intelligent people, to possibly find a solution to this mess, so that everyone can really live the American Dream. I believe brainstorming can solve alot of problems, if we can keep our egos aside.
