Ramblings of the Village Idiot

Word spreads fast. It did then and it does now. Widespread trade among our ancestors has been proven through archaeological research; products from an identifiable source appear thousands of miles away. With trade comes the sharing of knowledge and customs. And so the idea of religion spreads. As time goes by and localities continue discussion, subtle change inevitably occurs. Then these new aspects are spread by traders and travelers leading to complexity in belief and ceremony.

Humans love symbols and ceremony. It's part of our basic makeup and common planet wide. After many thousands of years religion has become an incredibly complex amalgam of gods, goddesses, rules and taboos. History is about to change and the effect is still here today. Greed becomes political policy and organized warfare and conquest emerge.

In neolithic times culture was based on kinship. The concept of kingship was formed and cooperation began to die a slow death. With conquest came the imposition of the religious beliefs of the conquerers and an end to tolerance. The theocracy was born and it was dominated by the male gender. Women lost their equality and were made subservient. They became property and the belief in the Earth as female provider faded. “Great” empires emerged with male gods ruling. Violence and conquest became the content of history and God  and/or the gods became angry, demanding and jealous. Religion became an excuse for war and greed. Abraham now takes his family from Ur to Palestine and the mayhem and carnage begin in earnest.

That's a very interesting history, Vit; thank you for posting it.

The true idea of the worship of God was to do so without symbolism. We know that God hated symbolism and hated images because of what Moses found when he returned with the 10 Commandments. We are meant to believe in God through faith and belief with no need to see or to understand. It is not God who creates imagines or gods and goddesses; it's man who creates these things because of the need to have something that can been seen or touched or worshipped.
As far as I understand, and you are quite welcome to disagree, the pagans did not worship the earth and the sky and so forth; they gave thanks, humbly, for what they were able to forage or for what they gathered. they didn't understand where it came from or how but they were grateful and they gave back to the earth so it could grow and renew.
That is certainly what we should be doing but it seems we are more likely to take what we have for granted.

Hey V,

How is it that YOU... "don't believe the Bible" and 'then bring up Abraham?'

IF the Bible is just a myth to you, when then do you Quote IT?

Thanks, Roger459.

Abraham is history. He was a living person to whom we have the availability of his history. Vit can elude to him at any time.

Abraham is written about extensivily in the Koran. And while not mentioned by name in the ancient writings of Egypt, the Habiru (Hebrews) are. Hired on two occasions as mercenarys to protect Egypts eastern frontiers .So Abraham "the father of many nations"is not exclusivly a Biblical character.Nor is he an eclusivly a Judeo/Christian figure.

That's not my intent Pete. Many folks here have questioned my beliefs; some out of curiosity and some to be cruel. I feel an historical background will help educate. I'm no missionary and couldn't care less who believes what, but is IS true that organized religion and patriarchal culture have bred violence by demonizing the Old Beliefs.

Hey Roger, I thought a myth was a female moth! You know as well as I do that anyone can quote any source. The entire Bible isn't a myth. Most of it? Yeah, probably. Why didn't Jesus write anything down?
