That move has stirred up a lot of controversy.

I’m not sure why we are surprised. We knew he would do this! I thought he would be more upfront about it instead of being so underhanded. This will most likely be his last term.

He's a lemming for the DNC.

I hope the workers think before joining, I work for a major grocery chain in Co. that is for the most part union. The benefits such as insurance, the number of paid holidays, and pay raises do not compare to most of the non-union retailers in this area, and you have to pay them $25.00 a week for their poor negotiating skills, I would be better off doing my own negotiations.

Had he not signed allowing the RIGHT to join, we would be Screaming Equal Rights! The issue of joining or not joining is totally seperate.

It's great that the state has allowed workers to join a union. I just hope this union realizes how important it is to push for good wages, don't be exploited by the dopey managers, continue to fight for a good health plan.

Wow.. I think this was a bad call on his part. Unions are bad in every work environment just look at the teachers union. There was once a time in history when unions were needed but not now. The age of unions have passed here in the United States oh let’s see when China started manufacturing most of our goods. Government workers get a ton of time off, over inflated pay and get almost nothing done. I don’t think they really need a union to help them do less work. All unions in the United States do is steal money from hard working people and slow down economic growth. Granted there was a time and a place for unions when people were being worked to death, were under paid, and did not get proper breaks.

what I have noticed is that any industry that is in trouble, usually has a union behind it: Airlines, automobile and now the entertainment industry with the writers strike lose millions. This kind of action could hurt our economy here in Colorado

Assuming that they join a union, this is the first time state employees will have a say in their careers. Unions offer the only democratic voice in the workplace, especially in a "right-to-work" state. Kudos for the guv's cajones!

Disappointing....I have worked in a union job and it isn't what it is cracked up to be. Someone mentioned that now they have a voice, I don't think so, now the UNION has a voice.
Bad idea, but coming from Ritter, I am not surprised

According to the Colorado State website, the Governor issues three types of executive orders:

("A" Orders make appointments to fill positions
"B" Orders create task forces and commissions
"D" Orders establish policy in the executive branch)
NOTE: Don't know what happened to "C", language is verbatim from the web site.

That said, it's not clear to me how establishing policy in the executive branch could be construed to extend to all state workers. Has the Governor overextended himself?
Is this action even legal?

More grist for the mill...

If you look at the problems the PERA has suffered over the last few years & carefully study the looming crisis in California public retirement, you can see the unfortinuate West coast influence that is sweeping our state. this latest act by the govenor is one more reason by I feel politicians are out of touch & treat citizens with contempt. Sad to say, soon we will be Colofornia.

Yea paid better for what you do and ALL holidays off! Sounds so bad! There is no reason why we should let unions extort tax payers!

I think Bill Ritter is putting himself out of a job.

So, if the state decides to strike, does that mean I stop paying my taxes until they go back to work? This seems goofy to me, the government refusing to service tax payors. I mean, the only thing the unions are good for is keeping you from being fired just because some idiot manager wants to "power trip" becaue his /her personal life isnt going well. As for pay raises ,job permotions ,forget about it, You are in the same boat as every other non-union American.
