Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney gave a speech defending his religion. Romney is Mormon.

He said a person should not be elected president because of his faith, and a person should not be rejected because of his faith. Romney said he is an American running for President.

Romney gave the speech largely because he has plunged in the polls recently in Iowa, while former Baptist minister Mike Huckabee has seen a big upswing.

Text of Romney's Speech

SHOULD ROMNEY'S FAITH MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN HIS CANDIDACY FOR PRESIDENT?

There is now way Romney's faith should come into play in the race... this is reminisent of John F. Kennedy's speech that he gave on September 12, 1960, addressing his religious issue...

I don't care what faith a candidate has so long as they are the best person for the job and I think that most Americans feel that way.

No one should judge anyone for what they believe in be it right or wrong. Just as with any employer in this Country that they can not base their hiring you on religion, race, sex,or creed. Yet we are all human here and still have opinions to make about someone else. We are not perfect.

This country is so full of hypocrites. Seperation of church and state. Then a persons religion wont matter.

When important life changing decisions are made relating to Abortion, Death Penalty, Marriage Law and so on, a candidates religious beliefs DO matter.

Choose wisely :)

If the candidate's religion can affect the American way of life, then it's definitely relevant. I don't know that Mormonism is contradictory to American values, but my guess is that it will alienate enough people to keep Romney out of office.

What many don’t seem to understand are 2 things: 1-There is no such thing as separation of church and state in the American Constitution. 2- There are people who have religious belief and serve our great Country and do it well.

Abraham Lincoln was one of these men and he said, "Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves; and, under a just God, can not long retain it."

America is the land of the free, there by if you are a Christian, Mormon, Jewish, Muslim, or even an atheist, you are free to run for office. Then it is up to The People to decide if they want to elect them or not. BUT as we have seen in the past, our most religious leaders have been some of our best.

We will always, and should always have persons of faith serve our Country, no matter what the capacity.

and that makes it ok in your opinion but alot of decisions are made off of religion and mistakes are made also to have trust in it is doubtable in a false sence and what is on earth is truth

If anyone knows about Mormans it is a faith that emphasizes family, community, work, volenteering and the "waste not, want not". I think the main problem is their history of multiple wives and not allowing blacks into their church. As to not allowing things like abortion, drinking, gays and many others, most religions do not but many good (fill in religion) go against their church. Like it has been stated the ability to be able to govern more than is important than the religion.

Notice how nobody had a problem with other Mormans in leadership.... Including the majority leader Harry Reid! Never heard a peep out of anyone did we....

The truth is people of religion. You can say you don’t believe religion should effect decisions in politics, but the truth is there are people of faith who are involved in politics. If you want more atheists involved then vote them into office… BUT it seems to me atheism is a form of religion as well. It is difficult to discern if I am responding to you correctly, because your sentences are not very clear. So correct me if I am not addressing your concern correctly.

The funny thing is that throughout history more conflicts, and wars all over the world had at least some influence of religion behind it. So to say a religious man can do the job better than someone else is not even close to true. Who ever becomes the next president should be the next president because he or she can do the best job in the interest of the "majority" who voted for him or her. Thats what free election is all about, not religion. If a man or woman goes to mass every sunday and takes communion and "humbles" him or herself before your God and repents his or her evil ways, and to commits to making his or her family spiritual by loving and accepting God as his or her savior, he or she is dubbed a good christian; "a religious man or woman very commited to god". It doesnt change the fact the wife is screwing the neighbor and the husband has 4 illegitimate children my ( "Good" Christian Neighbor) So please leave religion out of it and chose the best man or woman for the job. Your god has left the building on this subject.

The reason religion has been involved in almost all wars is that we have always caled upon dieties to help us win or if we die to send our soul to whatever heaven is to that culture. It was used to help the money/power hungry people so that they could build morale and not feel guilty if they lost.
