A California judge ordered Starbucks to pay its baristas more than $100 million in back tips -- plus interest.

A former barista filed a lawsuit that claimed the company made her split her tips with store managers, which is against California state law.

Starbucks says it believes in sharing tips, and is expected to appeal the ruling.

Do you tip at Starbucks? Who should get the tips?

Here's a tip for Starbucks (the company that wouldn't contribute to our fighting soldiers overseas). Appeal! Then I hope they award the workers more.

I manage a local coffee shop, and, though I don't frequent Starbucks unless desperate for coffee, I know that my baristas split tips based on hours worked, whereas my tip share comes only from my barista hours, not the time I spend sitting in the office doing paperwork. It's the physical work, quality of drink, and customer service that earns those tips, so they're definitely deserved by the people who do that work. (And yes...I still tip when I go to Starbucks.) :)

HAHA! Tipping for a drink? What are we going to be tipping for next? The cashier accepting my money and making change? Plain and simple fact is that they're doing their job, they shouldn't get tips. It is rude to the customer to have to include more money than the product is listed for. I do believe that these workers should receive wage increases. Tipping is a form of passing money without the government taking a percentage out. In the long run it screws us all! Increase wages and we wouldn't have to tip so much or have managers stealing from their workers!

In this case, the manager is being tipped for being present which is unjust. Running the shop is a manager's duty and that is why they are paid more. If they have to buck up and make some coffees, that is the cost of their wage increase as a manager. Aren't they on a very low salary away?

Sharing tips with managers is simply a way for Starbucks to avoid paying a management level wage to those people in charge. Instead they let the efforts of lower paid employees save the company money. Of course they should pay it back...and they should be boycotted until they do.

I've never been to Starbuck's, too used to 7-11 coffee I guess. It's not too bad, it's easy to chew.

You are already paying 4 bucks for 30 cents worth of coffee.

McDonalds coffee is just as good, no tip required

the shift supervisor's position is a barista position with more added responsibility. it's also an hourly position, so they deserve the tips too. maybe she had a lazy shift supervisor, but my shifts work very hard. I'm sure other coffee companies aren't as environmentally aware or participate in as much global stewardship as starbucks. quality does cost more, but that is not what this country is about anymore, is it?

Steve & Peggy,

I've been in the restaurant business for almost 20 years. This tipping of people at counters is way out of hand. What's next, tipping the register person at Burger King because they rang up my sandwich or asked if I want fries with that? Or do I tip my Butcher? Or better yet, should I tip my Pharmacist? If I walked into a Starbucks and sat down on the sofa and then got waited on, I would tip them. But to tip someone at the counter, who make at least minimum wage? No way. We should be tipping waiters and waitress’s who make less than minimum wage and really bust their backs on a daily basis to take care of their families.

idlfn - I pretty much agree with you on this one with the exception that as managers, I would assume they make pretty good money especially with the benefits. But I did add a reply to yours on the 'Ban pop in schools' blog.

Web Team - Specter is on to something here. What does this have to do with Colorado? How about the suggestions I made a few days ago for topics on QOTD? Did you get a chance to read Raysmom's entry I referred you to?

Kegger68 - ...you're right on the money...

OK- I'm bored enough to chime in. I buy Starbucks coffee- in the bag. I shouldn't- it's almost $9 a pound! It's a good product, but I can't believe that they can't afford to pay their employees enough to avoid this kind of scandal- court time on the taxpayer dime, and you know the judgement will just trickle down to the consumer, somehow. The whole Starbucks phenomenon is a study in corporate greed. FYI- If you go to a Starbucks located in another store, like the one in the Target at the Colorado Mills, they can't accept tips- Target policy prohibits it. Kegger has it right.

Secondly- this is the best QOTD you guys could come up with? Or is it that you think your viewing public is REALLY fluffy? I like blogs- but c'mon, give us something we can sink our teeth into- we can handle it!

I haven't been to a Starbuck's since I heard they refuse to support our military. But I never tipped them before anyway. When they charge $4 for a latte, they don't get a tip!
