A federal air marshal says the US Airways pilot who accidentally fired a gun mid-flight Had to have been mishandling the weapon.

The pilot has been suspended from flying during the investigation.

Newly released pictures show the bullet hole in the Airbus, Which was flying from Denver to North Carolina.

The bullet went through the wall of the cockpit.

The plane was descending to land at the time. But air safety experts say if the gun was fired at a higher altitude, the bullet hole could have caused the plane to rapidly depressurize.

Should the issue of pilots carrying weapons on board planes be revisited?

Absolutely not, one incident does not justify a overhaul. As far as the air marshal is concerned, unless he was standing there and watching, he doesn't really know for sure, what kind of weapon was it?? That is to say some have safety and some do not. I prefer the later myself..

Yet another one from the WebTeam today folks.
A little better but still I can't find any reason why the real issues in Colorado aren't discussed. You know, like the water supply in a certain town that's made hundreds sick, and that huge polluted mountain in another town. Kind of makes me wonder why we talk about California issues here??????????

Pilots SHOULD have the right to carry and the issue should not be revisted. There's not enough air marshals. The misuse by one does not reflect the whole. Proper training is the rule. You are the weapon the gun is the tool.

The armed pilot program has been a huge success and has cut security costs for airline travel dramatically. One idcident does not make the whole progam a failure but it does raise the issue of proper firearm hadling procedures. Firearms don't just "go off" by their self, there must be an outside force acting upon the firing mechanism first. I own a dozen guns and have handled thousands but have never experienced one just going off, it just doesn't happen.

The only reason their guns should be taken away is if all conceal and carry licenses are honored on a plane. People are less likely to commit a crime if the other person may be armed.
One accident is no reason to end the program and put all passengers in potential danger.

Absolutely not! However, and there is always a however in life, just like moltoforte stated, guns do not go off by themselves. The pilot was without a doubt improperly handling his or her weapon. But because of the nature of the setting involved, a commercial airliner in flight, and the potential for disaster, I feel the punishment should be substantial.

Accidents like that need to be prevented of course, but this is post-9/11 America. It would be insane for the pilots NOT to be armed.

They should be REQUIRED to carry.

I think that everyone should carry a gun! If you don't already have one, get one while you still can!! New laws every day. As they destroy our economy, they will know that people will get tired of getting the shaft. And they will try to take another one of your privilege's away!! The right to BARE ARMS!! Get one while you still can?

I was thinking of inventing the handgun/cellphone. I can spray a little lead in harms way then call my mom during the shooting and say Hi!
