The Denver Broncos have laid off eight front office employees, and they have not replaced a fired general manager and two departed assistant coaches.

Why? Team owners say it's because of the current labor deal the NFL has with the players and the sagging economy.

NFL Films has laid off 21 employees. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says more teams will face layoffs, just like the Broncos.

Broncos owner Pat Bowlen told the Rocky Mountain News, "The problem really is the players are getting too big a slice of the pie, so we're having to cut back in some other areas." He also said not all of the staff decisions were made for economic reasons.

What do you think... do you agree or disagree with Bowlen? Do professional athletes make too much money?

heck no they don't make too much money, just the bad ones. Think about it, their not getting hit with pillows they are getting hit with 250-300lbs of testosterone.as far as them getting paid more than teachers, lets take what congress gets paid and give it to the good hard working teachers, but the key word is good hard working.

Of course they make too much, but the only way to reverse the trend is for people to stop putting them on such a pedestal. Olympic athletes are few and far between as well, but they don't have the entitlement mentality most Americans are accustomed to. If you really love what you do, you don't need a multi-jillion dollar contract. Imagine the good that money could do if it were put to use throughout the community.

Not only do athletes make too much money, but movie stars, gas companieis, and the CEO for Excel Energy (who makes $26,000 a day) while HARD WORKING families struggle to provide.

These athletes receive "A King's Ransom for playing a Kids game." It is unusual that the medical team that takes care of major injuries to these players are making less than they are. I would play my heart out for less than half what they are making.

Just the players from the major sport rosters bring in an oil execs salaries. Roughly about 10 or so billion dollars a year goes to the salaries of players JUST from the NBA, NFL, and MLB. These players sometimes strike because they feel they deserve more money. Why can't we just stop showing up for the games and force their salaries down. They are all televised anyways.

Maybe if we paid these players less they would be humble and we would see less bar fights, dog fighting rings, DUI's, and bad behavioral gestures. Respectable salaries should go to acutual role models. You do not see Steve and Peggy flipping the bird and starting a brawl while getting a ticket for a DUI.

THEY ARE PAID TOO MUCH. Plain and simple. If the economy goes the path it is currently on there is no need to worry. Nobody will be able to afford to go to games, and the end result will be less salaries for the players.

It's too bad that Bowlin feels he has to lay people off in order to keep our players. They make WAY too much money, and I don't understand how they can just stand bye while people lose their jobs. Who needs that much money? Couldn't they rally together and give up even a portion of what they make for those unfortunate people?

Sports athletes should be paid based on the level of skill of the game they play, the complexity of that game, and they should have a cap saying no player makes more than $1,000,000 dollars a year. Stop these 10 to 100 million dollar contracts. Treat them like people with careers, not like gods.

The sports layoffs are a type of favortism. It is very sad that they will layoff hard working office personnel to save a buck instead of cut down players salaries even 10% to compensate. I think the office workers should just strike and see what happens. There is no point to these players if nobody is there to keep it organized and sell tickets.
