A 3rd grader was suspended from school after writing on his sweatshirt with a permanent marker and then smelling it. School officials say he was suspended for "drug abuse" on school property.

Do you think the punishment is too harsh?

Christ, he's in third grade.
It's not like I condone marker-sniffing or whatever, but that's simply ridiculous.

The school now states they will not permit any supplies on campus that are deemed "dangerous". What's next...scissors? Sharpened pencils? Glue? WOW, get serious!

im a former preschool teacher and i feel that this punishment was not only too harsh but also obseredly foolish on the part of the teacher and the principle. you dont give children who could possibly be irresponsible markers that could be harmful. further more it is very important that you explain the importance of properly using schoolhouse tools.
who are we hiring to teach our children? as parents we need to appoint people who are only quallified to teach and run schools, not ones who abuse their powers over our innocent children.

thank you

This is absolutely RIDICULOUS! That principal should be FIRED for neglecting to "educate" his students about what even he might think is considered "drug abuse."

What's next? Is this genius principal going to outlaw smelling flowers next? Or maybe maybe he thinks that washing clothes with perfumed detergent is drug abuse since it "entraps" some people to smell or "huff" their own clothes. However you you look at it this case it's simply insane!

The little kid probably doesn't even know what huffing means. Maybe instead of being idiots and suspending him for something he does not understand, they should talk to him to let him know that it is wrong. Suspension was not the answer here!

That is so ridiculous, what is wrong with these people??? I have a 3rd grader and I can guarantee that would be the furthest thing on their mind, I'd call it normal child behavior, and I agree with his father, move some where else.

This is nuts. We have become so paranoid that we have stopped using the common sense God gave a horse. Why not explain, to the child, what he was doing wrong before punishing him. When I saw him on the news, he appeared clueless as to what he did and why it was wrong. If he is that good an actor, his talent is being wasted going to school.

This is absolutely one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard right up there with the little 6 year old who got suspended for sexual harrassment when he hit a classmate on the butt. The adults in todays society have gone completely insane. What has this society become and when do the Stake burnings begin in this massive sexual harrassment witch hunt.

i think that this is pathetic. the kid is eight years old! he probably thought that it smelled good he doesnt know what he did! the school is using him as a scapegoat just to show us that they are against drug abuse. pathetic

This is crazy. This school has big issues. My son goes here and has had two in school suspensions this year. First and last year. His suspensions were stupid. He was being made fun of at lunch and asked the teachers for help and got none. He called the kids making fun of him a name and got suspened. Then he was eating lunch and a kid threw a shoe at him and get hit in the face. And he got suspened for what. This school sucks.

I think the principal should take a few days off himself. This is the most obserd thing I have heard a kid get suspended for. Those markers just smell funny and every kid sniffs permanent markers. There is no way a 3rd grader is conscious of the idea that he can sniff a marker to get a high.

To micahsmommy20, my thoughts exactly. As well as telling him how what he did is not acceptable, tell him the bad things that can happen.

HE'S EIGHT YEARS OLD! If the teacher asked why he was sniffing it, and he answers "gettin' high", an in-school suspension would be in order, but nothing worse. It's not like he brought a joint to school, he was sniffing stuff to stiff it, why? BECAUSE HE'S EIGHT!!!

GDCarpetMan~ I agree, yet instead they suspended him.... for "drug abuse".... how stupid!
Did you read the comment above from the parent of a child that attends that school? RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! I feel for her and her son. One thing a elementary school should focus on is BULLYING... thats where it all starts, and it only gets worse. So why are they suspending childeren for exploring a scent, instead of suspending a child for throwing a shoe! (like she said above!)

I am a parent of children at this school, and was interviewed after school today about this incident, the information I was given by your reporters is NOT the same information given to me before my interview. I believe not all the facts are being presented in this Story, and I know not all the facts are true because this happened in Westminster NOT Thornton. Without knowing all the facts we cannot make a judgement! And because of Legalities the principal is unable to give his full side of the story!
