Alameda High School in Lakewood is giving students an option and a decision to make.

They can agree to following a strict, uniform-like dress code in exchange for being able to use cell phones, iPods, etc, at lunch, or they can keep the current dress code and lose use of the gadgets at school.

School administrators want the dress code to help handle a gang problem. The dress code would be solid shirts and solid pants. Some students call the proposal "blackmail."

Administrators will make a decision based upon a survey that has gone out to students and parents.

What do you think about this idea?

If it will eliminate the use of the baggy pants some kids wear, I"m all for it. Besides, having students dress in conservative uniform-like clothing, with a zero tolerance policy towards modifying such clothing, will go a long ways toward eliminating the individual identifying characteristics that punk gang members display.

Kids need to focus on school, not on cell phones or what they or their friends are wearing. If a dress code is what it takes to do that then it should be done!

School and NOT a fashion show or a talk/text-a-thon!

truepatriot, I AGREE!!!! Make these kids cover up their underwear! No one wants to see it! Also, maybe it will keep boys from buying their jeans in the girls department.

Having raised 3 young men, I truly believe this is a great step! Dress uniforms will eliminate over 50% of the garbage that teens deal with daily under peer pressure. I understand having teenage identity, but they can have that identity outside of school. I love the young man's patriotism, but that is outside of the focus of school. When students are focused on school, the business of going to school will get done. I say to the school admin - keep tough on this! This is a right and good direction to take.

I dont agree that a public school has the right to control what the student body wears to a certain point. Yes, please cover up the underwear, this is not a fashion statement in school. Yes, students are there to learn, but I do follow the laws of this country. I am refering to a sumpreme court ruling Tinker v. Des Moines and there are otheres heres a web page to check out. http://www.firstamendmentcenter.org/speech/studentexpre

Some students don't know the meaning of the word "blackmail." I'm guessing these students don't know the meaning of a lot of words.

Maybe once they're concentrating on school and not what everyone else is wearing, they'll learn the meaning of such words.

And I'm all for the constitution, but when behavioral problems in schools spread to more than a few students, I think the school should have every right to mandate what the students should wear.

If I attended that school keeping the same dress code, would be my choice. I go to a charter school and sometimes I feel like the teachers and deans woory more about what we wear than what we learn. The cell phone loss is no big deal kids are still going to find a way to text and get away with it.

I have always thought that school uniforms was a good idea. In exchange for using cell phones? Not during testing because I know they text the answers to each other. By the way (little off the subject) this seems like a pretty smart group....does anyone know the answer to these questions? 1. What type of business is closest to pure competition? 2. What type of business is still out there that is pure monopoly?

Students are at school for a reason and that's to learn. There are already too many distractions for them not to focus on their studies. Cell phones and fashion are a big part of that distraction. Parents and students today need understand the core value of a good education now and worry about their social values later.

This is totally completely fair. I am a student myself, and I will admit, I am not the typical prep or jock. I wear a leather jacket with patches on it, have long hair, wear combat boots and the whole nine yards. A "metalhead" is the term for it I guess. I am positive that this is fair, kids have spent most of their high school years texting in class, and not devoting time for education. I wouldn't be all so happy with the dress code because that takes away some individuality, but from what I have seen, every guy these days looks like a girl, and all of the girls look the same, with a select few people having their own sense of unique style. Kids do not NEED cell phones, but most of them throw a fit once they get taken away like it is the end of the world.

(I rarely use mine except for contacting work, friends, and parents, not texting for hours on end)

Benefit to uniforms would be the girls not wearing the trampy style and the males not wearing baggy cloths, will not be as easy to sneak weapons into school and be less distracting. Take away the cellphones, the students need to have more face to face communication skills. Of course if they want to be phone sales more power to them, people need to get back to an in person social life.

Zypher, while that is true, not every guy dresses like a gangster or whatever the hell they are, and not every little girl dresses like a whore. Its a common stereotype of this generation. Plus, not every high school student is going to sneak in a hand gun to pop off a few rounds during lunch. The only thing you truly got correct in that was the fact that kids need to be face to face again.

all i know is i wear baggy clothes and have a cell phone and all of my grades are good. Perhaps the school should change something about itself.
