Wal-Mart beats slump with higher quarterly profit, projects weaker Q4 news 13 November 2008

Wal-Mart Stores has reported third-quarter profit that topped analysts' estimates but said a stronger dollar would squeeze its full-year profit, even as the world's largest retailer said it was ''optimistic'' about the upcoming holiday shopping season.

Walmart expects Christmas boost to sales despite the declining trend in US consumer spending and the worst recession in at least three decades, a situation which has already led to the country's No2 electronics dealer Circuit City filing bankruptcy.

Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart posted operating income of $3.03 billion, or 77 cents a share, up from $2.85 billion, or 70 cents a share, a year earlier. Including a gain from discontinued operations, net income in the latest quarter was $3.14 billion, or 80 cents a share, up from $2.86 billion, or 70 cents, in the prior year. Revenue rose 7 per cent to $97.63 billion from $90.82 billion. Analysts had expected profit of 76 cents on sales of $98.42 billion.

While the ongoing slump in consumer spending has deflated sales at most retailers, Wal-Mart continues to benefit as more budget-conscious Americans trade down in their everyday purchases.

The figures show that Wal-Mart CEO Lee Scott's strategy to emphasise lower prices is working, enabling Wal-Mart to win customers from Target Corp and Macy's Inc as shoppers curb spending. Investors have rewarded Wal-Mart with an 11 per cent increase this year, the only one of 30 companies in the Dow Jones Industrial Average to rise.

The November-December holiday shopping months are critical to retailers because the period can account for as much as 50 per cent of merchants' annual profit and sales.

What are your shopping habits during this economic crunch?

Are you spending more time at Walmart?  Dollar stores?

Are we spending more at walmart because we are getting more or cause they've dropped a lot of brands and charging more for the few they have?

hey there beautiful Anchor....how are you?

To be quite honest, I loved Wal-Mart for everything except meats. I've seen their meats GO UP LIKE CRAZY.......I am talking two chicken breast for 8.00 bucks..NO THANKS. So what I do now, I go to Publix, which lately, have been having GREAT SALES on meats and are much fresher and everything else like cleaning products; paper products; and oils, coffee I hit walmart for those items. I actually get more for the dollar at Walmart then if I were to do all my shopping at Publix (killer prices on paper products items and fruits). OF course, with the economy I ALSO JUST BY WHAT WE NEED......NO THRILLS....LOL..have a great day!

With my husbands jod being afected by the economy and I am a stay at home mom that babysits for a teacher,we have started get most of our food from angelfoods. It is a great help you can get food for a family of 4 for a week for $30.00 and no limit on the amount you order, plus you can get meat and veggie speacials for $21.00 so all we shop for is paper goods, shampoo, breakfast stuff.

I actually buy split breast chicken and debone it myself. Even boneless chicken at 4.39 is ridiculous! I save myself almost 2.50 to 3 bucks a pound by using the knife in the rack! (usually Winn Dixie for meat, and sometimes SweetBay on Sat. morning for sales)

My kids don't know the difference between Walmart Gramm crackers and name brand. Used to go to Costco, but even their meat is ridiculous! Honestly... the wife and I have changed our diets, and eat almost half what we used to.. Milk is actually cheaper at CVS (3.48 a gallon) than the same brand at Winn Dixie in the yellow bottles at 7 bucks!

You literally have to shop around!

No way would I shop anywhere but Publix. But, I'm grateful for the other stores mentioned here. They keep the trash out of Publix...

Check out the prices at Aldi. Although they do not carry well known name brands, the milk and egg prices are great. Gallon of regular milk is $2.79 and eggs are $1.19 a dozen. Fruit is also cheaper. Walmart milk is $3.48.

I don't buy anything else there, but the savings on the above are well worth the trip.

Justspeakingfacts - Since you are shopping at Publix I see that they are failing to keep out the "trash"............your attitude exemplifies the reason animals eat their young.

My wife shops mostly at Publix and once in a great while will buy something at Wally World, but that is rare.

I try to avoid walmart, however there are things that I can get cheaper there. But it seems I'm spending more $ for the same items I've always gotten there. Been visiting the dollar stores agian. Last year wasn't like this at all.

Hi friends! We've done lots of stories about the great prices at Aldi, but I haven't tried it yet. I need to get over there at some point.

I find myself doing all my shopping (groceries and toiletries, etc.) at Target lately.. and using lots of coupons. Anyone else clipping?

amyk - I haven't tried Target for groceries, etc. How are the prices?

My neighbor and I share one Sunday newspaper.
Whoever buys the paper that week gets first choice of coupons. It's been great!

Has anyone used on-line coupons? Do all the stores take them??? Are there limits on these?

Lekvarcookies, where's the Aldi?

I've always been a real penny pincher. The best meat prices are at BJ's and I have always used Wal-mart for almost everything else. They are just cheaper. I do hit Publix for flavored soda water, Fels Naptha and washing soda. Wal-mart just doesn't sell those things.

I've got a brother who does I.T. work for Wal- Mart in Bentonville. Has worked for them about 12 years and with stock options makes a low 6 figure income. Says they are a good company to work for and anyone with talent and willing to apply themselves should have no problem advancing.
Taken a few vacations there and it's beautiful country , if I didn't live in Glorida I would like to live there.
B.T.W. I do shop there for most everything except for meats,They used to have a butcher in the one I frequent ( Mt. Dora) But now they do the butchering on a regioning level.
B.T.W./B.T.W. Muck (brother) also says that outside the D.O.D. Wally World Has One OF the largest and most complete data bases going.
