In the many centuries that PRE-DATE both Judeism and Christianity there were the Pagans. Pagans celebrate Yule, which does have a tree decorated with candles or in this day and age lights. The Rabbi that said that Christianity is the only religion that uses trees with lights was incorrect. The city should not be putting up decorations of any religion if they are to hold to separation of church and state thing.  However lighting a tree was done in ancient times also. Durring cold and bad weather to light the path of those traveling so they could find shelter and warmth.

The holiday season is something that came out of Judeism and Christianity trying to convert the Pagan masses they encountered. All The dates for these holidays, you will find, rotate around the original Pagan days of celebration. Yule is celebrated at winter solstice, Christmas right after, and so on. Even our halloween was created by the Catholic Church, a little inadvertantly, when they created All Saints Day and All Saints Eve. The Day of the Dead was a mixture of celebration of the christian variety and and pagan when the christian religion was very young.
