MJO Presents Jazz Trombonist Andy Martin In Concert
Englewood, CO October 1, 2008 – The Metropolitan Jazz Orchestra is excited to bring internationally renowned jazz trombone virtuoso Andy Martin to Denver for a clinic and concert on Saturday, November 8th, 2008 at Cherry Creek High School. The clinic will start at 2p in the school auditorium and the concert will start at 7p (doors open at 6p).
Tickets for the clinic and concert are available at MetropolitanJazzOrchestra.org, on the Guest Artist Program page.
Andy will hold a clinic in the auditorium at 2p on Saturday. For any students (and adults alike) who are interested in a career as a professional musician, this is a great opportunity to talk to one of the leading studio, recording, and performing players in Los Angeles! Andy is the “first call” trombone player for most LA trombone work and his experience in the industry is invaluable. This clinic is not only for trombone players but for any musician looking to get the behind-the-scenes info on the very competitive studio and theater music industry.
Later that evening, Andy will be performing a sizzling concert at 7p backed up by MJO with a variety of tunes including a special debut tune commissioned for MJO by Los Angeles Composer/Arranger Gary Urwin (GaryUrwinjazz.com).
Coming from a musical family, trombonist Andy Martin launched his career while still in his teens. His technique and virtuosity quickly established him on the Los Angeles music scene, and since that time he has become one of the most in-demand trombonists across the country, and around the world. His sparkling bebop lines and consummate musicianship make him equally at home on the stage or in the studio, and he maintains a busy schedule in L.A. as a recording artist, sideman, and section player, while traveling frequently for guest appearances.
A world-class jazz musician, Andy has already released eight albums as either leader, or co-leader. These albums showcase his dazzling improvisation alongside other top jazz artists such as the late Carl Fontana, Pete Christlieb, Bobby Shew, and Eric Marienthal. Andy leads a quartet on his latest record project, which is soon to be released on the Fresh Sounds label. He has also collaborated as a sideman with jazz greats such as Stanley Turrentine and Horace Silver. Andy has a long association with Vic Lewis and has been the featured soloist on Vic's cds for the last 17 years. Vic was instrumental in getting Andy and The Metropole Orchestra together for the marvelous recording on Mons Records.
Additionally, he is well-known for his work as a lead player, and featured soloist, with virtually every big band in L.A. Most notably, he has performed with Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band, the Bill Holman Big Band, and Tom Kubis’ band. He has also appeared in bands led by Jack Sheldon, Louis Bellson, Quincy Jones, Matt Cattingub and Bob Curnow, among others.
The MJO (a 501c3 non-profit corporation) is an 18-pc. jazz orchestra performing in and around Denver since 2002 with current monthly gigs at Dazzle Jazz Club and The D-Note. MJO features both male and female vocalists and is known for their wide variety of big band jazz as well as their outstanding vocalists. Whether playing the classics of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller, Stan Kenton or Count Basie, or today’s Big Phat Band tunes, MJO is a powerhouse of big band sound and with an extensive repertoire, their performances have something for every big band jazz lovers taste! Call MJO at 303-521-8206 for all the details. Sponsorship opportunities available for this event.
Why is Fox even bothering to call their latest competition, The Battle of the Bands? It should be named Battle of the Email Accounts because that is really what it is. The whole thing is ridiculous!
I love local music and I was excited about the competition until I realized that is has NOTHING to do with music; it is about how many bands can create numerous email accounts and get their friends and families to keep voting these email accounts every hour. How silly, and I, for one, refuse to participate in this non-musical game. If I was one of the bands, I would be sooo disgusted!
All these online competitions are a farce. It's never about the music, it's ALWAYS about how good you are about manipulating the computer. I noticed one of the bands that received over 20,000 votes at the Lincolnpark competition (in that one you could vote as often as you wanted ) has only received 15 votes at this one. What happened to all those fans in 2 weeks? Just bogus and ridiculous...!
I have stopped voting because it means nothing. It doesn't matter who you like or who is good, it only matters how adept you are at the computer. The band who is ahead is not that good, but I suppose spending hours creating email accounts is the one thing they can do. I guess that's good because they will have a job to fall back on after the "contest".
I am so DONE with all these bogus, silly computer contests that pretend it's about the music. I am surprised that Fox would sponsor something like this. Unfortunately, my opinion of them has just been lowered. I will be watching another network for my news. Shame on you Fox to diss local bands and talent like this....!!!!
To the REAL musicians...Keep rockin' and never let the real music die!
ive started another category of questions for music lovers'ok fist question:

I don't know much about the new hyper-def stereo tuners and satellite radio, so I spend some time on "regular" radio, and I got turned on to a really great Classic Rock radio station, KYEN based in Severance, Colorado.
They're at 103.9 FM, but you may have trouble picking them up if you don't have a decent antenna (Severance is between Greely and Ft. Collins).
Their format is Classic Rock*, and they're commercial-free. I don't know how they're able to operate without commercials, but I love it.
Great music all day long.
*Still trying to decide if Bruce Hornsby and the Range is Classic Rock, but it was all good nontheless.
I am a grandmother of 13. I was a bus driver for 30 years and raised, trained and shown horses all my life. Due to a severe car accident in Wyoming in 2005, I am unable to due those things now and so am just a stay at home grandma
I also play the organ. My mother taught me, but never did learn to play the piano.
However, John Denver was my all time favorite singer, composer entertainer.
Hey there, fellow audiophiles...
My kids are starting to appreciate the finer forms of recorded music (as opposed to Britney and Miley).
I'm putting together some definative compilation cd's for them to experience modern (and classical) music, and would like to gain your input for tracks.
I was going to classify them by genre, but whatever's clever.
Got any playlists you'd like to share?
Miley Cyrus is a famous person now. From her acting to singing. She is a good person right? Well i have to disagree on that. Why you may ask. But her choices that she commits are wrong and are affecting children everywhere. Some parents are blaming this teen star.Should she quit? what do you think?
I do not want to get more into detail because it good end up bad
