History Learning SiteCivil Rights > The 1965 Voting Rights Act

The 1965 Voting Rights Act was a natural follow on to the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Ironically, the 1964 Act  had resulted in an outbreak of violence in the South. White racists had launched a campaign against the success that Martin Luther King had had in getting African Americans to register to vote. The violence reminded Johnson that more was needed if the civil rights issue was to be suitably reduced.

Johnson introduced to Congress the idea of a Voting Rights Act in what is considered to be one of his best speeches:

"Rarely are we met with a challenge…..to the values and the purposes and the meaning of our beloved Nation. The issue of equal rights for American Negroes is such as an issue…..the command of the Constitution is plain. It is wrong - deadly wrong - to deny any of your fellow Americans the right to  vote in this country."

With his commitment to the cause, Congress realised that Johnson would not back down on this issue and if they hindered or failed to back it, Americans would view the failure to be one by Congress alone.

The Act was passed. It outlawed literacy tests and poll taxes as a way of assessing whether anyone was fit or unfit to vote. As far as Johnson was concerned, all you needed to vote was American citizenship and the registration of your name on an electoral list. No form of hindrance to this would be tolerated by the law courts.

The impact of this act was dramatic. By the end of 1966, only 4 out of the traditional 13 Southern states, had less than 50% of African Americans registered to vote. By 1968, even hard-line Mississippi had 59% of African Americans registered. In the longer term, far more African Americans were elected into public office. The Act was the boost that the civil rights cause needed to move it swiftly along and Johnson has to take full credit for this. As Martin Luther King had predicted in earlier years, demonstrations served a good purpose but real change would only come through the power of Federal government. Johnson proved this. V Sanders has called what he did as a "legislative revolution". Johnson had one break in that he worked with a Congress that had a majority of Democrats serving in it and as a Democrat president both could work well together.

In 1968, another Civil Rights Act was passed which prohibited racial discrimination in the sale or rental of houses. Signs such as "Negroes need not apply" were no longer tolerated in a society becoming more and more traumatised by the Vietnam War.

If it weren't so serious, it would be hilarious.

First of all, Mayor Cockrel, I am very pleased with your decision in selecting two outstanding and honorable men:  Saul Green and James Berren.   Great beginnings.

I am a Probation Agent who works very closely with the Detroit Police Department.  I am sadden that Dwight Hudson who was the Deputy Chief at the Western District chose to retire.  Mr. Hudson is one of the most honorable men I've ever met in my life.  I am writing this letter to you, in part, to welcome you as the City of Detroit's Mayor, but also to let you know that I am also very disappointed that Mr. Hudson was given a choice to be demoted or retire.

I'm telling you that it is my opinion that of the many people I've had the pleasure of working with throughout all areas of law enforcement and not just Detroit, this man is without a doubt and hands down, a wonderful human-being who really cares about the citizens in the City of Detroit and took his job very seriously.  Mr. Hudson is a gentle giant who will be missed.  It has been my experience in working with him, that public safety was paramount.

I only know Mr. Hudson on a professional level.  I believe that not having this man on your team is a huge mistake but will be a tremendous loss to the City of Detroit.  Because of DC Hudson's professionalism, I'm so sure he will do well anywhere he goes.

And Mr. Hudson, if you are reading this, please know that it has been a pleasure working with you, and you are the GREATEST!  May God continue blessing you!

Here is the scoop about felons and whether they can vote.

Felons can vote, as long as they are not in jail or prison.  Further, people who are in jail PENDING criminal charges, misdemeanor or felony cases, but NOT convicted while still in jail, CAN VOTE.

Please pass this information on.

How dare George Bush continually lie to the citizens of the United States about how "we" got into the mess that "we" are in and oops, we must bail (pay additional taxes) out the white collar criminals.   While he continually spend our tax dollars, at least $60,000,000,000, that's BILLIONS monthly (or is that daily) in IRAQ, he lied to the public, to the world how great we were financially doing.  (What a LIAR!)  Many of us knew better.  Now, he is again using scare tactics, which now they are legitimate concerns right up in our faces, and there is no way for Bush or his crew to lie them away.

Talk about Kwame going to jail?  Yes, he definitely deserves to go to jail.  But Bush?  He deserves to be charged with Treason, War Crimes, Larceny, and Extortion for harming and devastating the residents of our United States of America.

(And what were those recent simulus checks all about?  How many of us were just so happy to get some extra dollars as opposed to looking deeper into the reason the snake was appearing to be so kind?)

The Magnitude and Meaning of the Proposed Bailout

The Magnitude and Meaning of the Proposed Bailout:
What $700 Billion for Wall Street means on Main Street

NPP Provides Analysis of $700 Billion for Taxpayers

The plan proposed by President Bush and Secretary Paulson for a $700 billion bailout of Wall Street is difficult for most people to comprehend.  At NPP, we've been crunching the numbers and offer this analysis of what $700 billion means to taxpayers.

A healthy and productive economy requires substantial investment in affordable housing, health care, education and renewable energy.  Taxpayers in the United States will be required to pay $700 billion for the Wall Street bailout.  They should also know that for the same amount of money, they could secure the following:

  • 51.6 million people with health care for four years OR

  • 181.2 million homes with renewable electricity for four years OR

  • 2.9 million elementary school teachers for four years OR

  • 27 million four-year scholarships for university students

$700 billion is more than what is currently allocated for the U.S. war in Iraq.  This amount would allow us to repair all of our nations 77,000 deteriorated bridges and still have $519 billion to spend; or it would allow us to rebuild all of our nations 33,000 deteriorating schools and still have $664 billion to spend.  For more analysis and trade-offs at the State and Congressional District level, please visit National Priorities Project's Trade-offs page online (www.nationalpriorities.org/tradeoffs).p>

McCain Rated As America’s Worst Senator For Children»

mccain3332.JPGToday, the Children’s Defense Fund Action Council released its 2007 Nonpartisan Congressional Scorecard. CDF reports some positive news, particularly that average scores for members of Congress “improved from the previous three years with more Members scoring 100 percent than in 2004, 2005 or 2006.”

Many, however, did not fare so well. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) received a 10 percent rating — the worst in the U.S. Senate.

CDF ranked members on 10 votes affecting children:

1. Increase minimum wage (H.R. 2)
2. Increase funding for children with disabilities (S. Con. Res. 21)
3. Protect children from unsafe medications (S. 1082)
4. 2008 Budget resolution (S. Con. Res. 21)
5. SCHIP Reauthorization (H.R. 976)
6. College Cost Reduction and Access Act (H.R. 2669)
7. SCHIP (H.R. 976 - motion to concur)
8. DREAM Act (S. 2205)
9. Funding child health and education (H.R. 3043)
10. Improving Head Start programs (H.R. 1429)

McCain has missed 57 percent of Senate votes this session, being absent or voting “present” for 8 out of 10 children-related votes. McCain voted “yes” to increase the minimum wage; his only other vote was voting “no” on SCHIP reauthorization on Aug. 2, 2007:

mccaincdf.gif

Furthermore, the rankings weren’t divided by party. Sens. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), and Gordon Smith (R-OR) received strong 70 percent rankings.

McCain’s CDF score has steadily declined over the years. In 2004, he received a 38 percent; in 2005, 22 percent; in 2006, 10 percent.

Was I the only one who saw McCain disrespectfully motioning to his wife to come on, on Friday, 9/5/08 in Sterling Hts during the McCain rally?  Look at the tape real closely, especially after McCain took the Red Wing jersey from his running mate.

Very interesting.

Also, when Cindy's hand supposedly got hurt by a hand shake from one of the McCain supporters, where is the supporter and when that "person" shook her hand, did she yell out?  Did the supporter apologize?

Sorry, I'm not buying the supporter, shake hand story.

Is it because "the white man's being doing it for years?"

Is it because " Mayor Kilpatrick deserves respect?"

Is it because " white people would love to see "our" Mayor go down?"

Is it because....OK!  ENOUGH OF THE BS ALREADY!

This man needs to leave the office of Mayor because he has disgraced it in so many varied ways, period!

He said there was no party at the Manoogian Mansion?  Ya believe that??

When asked under oath if he had a romantic/sexual relationship with Christine Beatty, he didn't just say no but gave a dessertation to his no, mentioning something about "...wh-re...(rhymes with core)?"

He said that he and Christine did not fire Gary Brown?  Ya believe that?

He said the red Escalade, bought by the taxpayers in the amount of $24,500 ($500 less from what City Council would have had to approve) was not really bought for his wife or family, although she was seen it.  Hmmm.  Did he ever pay back the city, with the city's money?

Someone said it, "...he can sell snow to an Eskimo..."  I think it was Barbara (flip-flop) Collins.

I'm a very proud Black woman who is sick and tired of those people who condone Kwame KIlpatrick's continuous deviant behavior.

Kwame Kilpatricks behavior is despicable.  He should be called out and not coddled.

KK doesn't know what the truth is if it sat on his tongue.  He has proven that he is an habitual liar.  He stood in front of Judge Giles face, while the camaras were rolling, and said the Mayor from Windsor called him and requested that he come to Windsor.  And all this was said to the Judge, in the same breath as him telling the Judge that he respects the Judge and the Honorable Judicial System.   Hmmmmmmmmm.

I am just blown away how some in the Black community continue to condone the behavior of deviants.  If the community I live in is to ever, overall, get it together, deviant behavior can not be ignored, swept under the carpet, kept among "us," or any of those "shaking my head" kinds of things I see people do.

Everybody sees the man who has come to the cocktail party in a pink suit with a snotty nose and who has brought his own wine, in a bag, to this party.  Everybody's whispering.

I'm at the party, and I've got to say something.

Psst, Mr. Kilpatrick.   Psst, Mr. Kilpatrick.  Sir, it's time to leave.

It was absolutely wonderful!!  The Funkedelics were great.  The show was awesome.

The food.   GREAT!!

The people:  BEAUTIFUL.

If I could change one thing, it would be encouraging people to use the trash containers.  No excuses; there were plenty of trash containers....that were empty,

But as far as a good time, I had a wonderful, peaceful, and great time!  Thanks to all the wonderful citizens and visitors of Detroit.

They Walk Among Us and Many Work Retail

I was at the checkout of a K-Mart. The clerk rang up $46.64 charge. I gave her a fifty dollar bill.  She gave me back $46.64.  I gave the money back to her and told her that she had made a mistake in MY favor.  She became indignant and informed me she was educated and knew what she was do ing, and returned the money again. I gave her the money back, same scenario!

I departed the store with the $46.64.

They Walk Among Us and Many Work Retail
I walked into a Starbucks with a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for a Grande Latte.. I handed it to the girl and she looked over at a little chalkboard that said 'buy one-get one free.' 'They're already buy-one-get-one-free,' she said, 'so I guess they're both free.'

She Handed me my free Lattes and I walked out the door.

They Walk Among Us!< B>

One day I was walking down the beach with some Friends when one of them shouted, 'Look at that dead bird!' Someone looked up at the sky and said, 'Where?'

They Walk Among Us!

While looking at a house, my brother asked the real Estate agent which direction was north because, he explained, he didn't want the sun waking him up every morning. She asked, 'Does the sun rise in the north?' When my brother explained that the sun rises in the East, and has for sometime, she shook her head and said, 'Oh I don't keep up with all that stuff.'

They Walk Among Us!!

I used to work in technical support for a 24/7 call center. One day I got a call from an individual who asked what hours the call center was open. I told him, 'The number you dialed is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week..' He responded, 'Is that Eastern or Pacific time?' Wanting to end the call quickly, I said, 'Uh, Pacific.'

They Walk Among Us!

My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk.

They Walk Among Us!

My friends and I were on a beer run and noticed that the cases were discounted 10%. Since it was a big party, we bought 2 cases. The cashier multiplied 2 times 10% and gave us a 20% discount.

They Walk Among Us!

I couldn't find my luggage at the airport baggage area, so I went to the lost luggage office and told the woman there that my bags never showed up. She smiled and told me not to worry because she was a trained professional and I was in good hands. 'Now,' she asked me, 'has your plane arrived yet?'

They Walk Among Us!

While working at a pizza parlor, I observed a man ordering a small pizza to go.. He appeared to be alone and the cook asked him if he would like it cut into 4 pieces or 6. He thought about it for some time before responding. 'Just cut it into 4 pieces; I don't think I'm hungry enough to eat 6 pieces.'

Yep, They Walk Among Us!

They Walk Among Us,

And they Reproduce,

And Worst of all ..........

THEY VOTE

I love God so much. Additionally, I love my family, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. You know what I try not to do? I consciously make efforts in not taking any of these people for granted. Life is so short. If I could change the world, I would end ignorance. If I could change the world, I would end hunger. If I could change the world, I would end poverty. In my new world, people would take responsibilty. People would not be mean. In my world, there would be equality, justice, love, and righteousness. Life is short. I'll work on me and try my very best to be a beacon of light. Will I be perfect? Nope, I'm just a work in progress with strong opinions.
