Conspicuous Consumption Economics

Conspicuous consumption is the force that drives the U.S. economy. If the consumers are not consuming, then the economy is not moving. But it takes more then just spending to spur growth. If consumer goods are not manufactured locally, the proceeds from the sales are not retained locally. If the jobs that create these consumer goods are sent to another country, then it is that country’s economy that benefits from our conspicuous consumption. All we benefit from are a bunch of consumer goods that ultimately end up populating our land fills.

Now let's look at China's booming economy. Because so many jobs and manufacturing have been sent to China, this means that their economy is flooded with U.S. payroll dollars. Now the Chinese people have money for consumer goods. U.S. businesses may have larger bottom line profits because of overseas outsourcing and sending factors to China in the short term, but in the long term, it will be the Chinese people and their businesses that will cut them out of the middle.

A real stimulus plan for the U.S. should have long term benefits, not short term goals that borrow American money from China, and then loan it to Americans, that have to be paid back to China. For real long term growth, (This means economic growth after the elections) Factors and jobs have to come back to America. But before that can happen, healthcare has to be fixed. Healthcare costs are too much for a company to make a profit.

Great points. However....what is running this country is the illegal alien issue. (mainly from Mexico ) Other illegals whether from Africa ,china, and Europe aren't flooding the system in unbelievable numbers and you don't find most of the other illegals eagered to accept dirt cheap labor. So what do you have? nearly 25 million people who" from jump" cannot afford healthcare. So who picks up the tab? American tax payers that's who! . Not only that, insurance companies raise their(Americans) rates to cover illegals who they treat without a co-pay. So who gets hit again? Americans. More out of their pockets. That means ,as well, they don't have extra income to buy products to support the economy -keeping us from recessions. So, what does our government do? They borrow from counties like China. Honestly, How can we be a global completive society when nearly 40% of our working force will be unskilled and making 3rd world wages? And get this, nearly 80% of illegals send 20 -40% of their income back to Mexico!! Why cant we get this??

Interesting post Douglas.
Kind of makes you think that maybe the economic stimulus plan should be a little longer thinking rather than just funnel $600 American dollars through our system and into China.

Healthcare has been at a tipping point for years now. What is it going to take to make it crumble under it's own broken weight and force us to make a better system?

Please forgive me for not being up on government, etc... but how are they determining who gets the money? Is it from a list by the IRS? Is it from a list by social security? How do they know who to send it to? Will those here illegally or on welfare going to get money as well?

If you think that health care is the issue, then your in space buddy.

Extremist environmental regulation and taxes are why our jobs have left.

I don't disagree with the topic, but health care is merely the recent act of financial woes, what about everything that came before the health care issue. You have completely ignored environmental regs and taxes. Not to mention the population difference which makes it extremely difficult to compete in an even trade, and it's not even, ie deficit.

No matter how you choose to pitch socialist health care it remains socialist.

Health care is not the solution, a return to manufacturing something in this Nation is!!

Your blog somewhat states that obvious fact, but you went off on a tangent.

If you cut the cost of health care, who profits from that, the worker, the manager, or the owner???

All of them yes in a sense, but to socialize it is a joke, social security is going bankrupt. Walter Reed is the only model of socialized health care in the United States. I suggest you google it and read up on all the negative press.

Just like the Liberals, you let your party brain wash you. Less government, means less regulation to turn the U.S into a Free Global Market. This type of market take from the middle class. The Reps, might let you think you are one of them, but you are a sliding middle class American. You're a sucker if you think you are helping America. You are helping people that don't even live in this country.

So you are a socialist!! Or a Ron Paul isolationist.

Which one chick----fill us suckers in since your so full of answers.

Your the sucker chick, I know what I stand for and it isn't the Ron Paul scare tactic that the IT types like to spread.
Your also coming off like every IT person I've ever met including my Dad. You think you have the answer to everything. You guys always trouble-shoot for answers, and fail miserably I might add.

You obviously are not looking for debate, you want a smack-down we can go that way, but you'll do well not to go off on a tangent and then expect others to digest the garble.

It's a welfare check bottom line, when you get yours chick, put it in savings. I pay high level taxes so I won't get one, don't want one, won't deposit one, and don't need one.

Pull up your briches folks and deal with your damn debt.
