I have struggled most of my life with a weight issue.  As most of you know, this past September 30th I underwent lap band surgery.   At 280 pounds and 5' 10 I was considered severely morbidly obese.  We are always told not to compare ourselves to others but I was among the smaller severely morbidly obese,  as I am among those weighing hundreds more.   What the condition did for my health was taking a toll on my life.   I had developed type 2 diabetes and in addition to medication for that I was taking medicine for high Cholesterol.   Last week my doctor officially took me off both medications.   My sugar and cholesterol have reduced to levels that are no longer a danger to my health.  I continue to monitor my levels at home and will do so for a while.  I have lost 45 pounds and although I still have another 40 or 50  to go, I am on my way to hopefully a longer life.

I write about this now because of what the Governor will announce today.   Yes we have a problem in the U.S. with obesity.  He wants school children to be measured  and labels put on almost everything we eat at restaurants.  Kids that are obese will be sent home with a letter and another label will be placed upon them.  These kids must have a horrible time at school with teasing and name calling.   Kids can be cruel.   I don't know how much a letter and a label will help these kids.  It certainly didn't help me.   It took years of diets and struggling to do something for myself.   Labels didn't do anything for my many years of killing myself with smoking.  It wasn't till I was ready to quit that I finally gave them up.   Labels didn't do anything for my alcoholism and drug abuse even though I knew it was killing me, it wasn't till I was ready to make some changes did I stop.   A person knows when they are too heavy.  I can now cross my legs to put a pair of socks on.   Something so simple that most just take for granted.   Instead of  taking the elevator to ride the 4 flights  to my apartment I walk up and down them.  Labels are good to a certain degree.  I spend more time in the grocery now reading, more than buying.   I don't know if we need more government in our lives telling us what not to eat or just more education.

So when I started this quest,  I was labeled Severely Morbidly Obese.  The step down from there was Morbidly Obese.  I am now considered just plain old Obese.  For years that identified me with my doctors.  my name wasn't David D. it was Obese Patient.  I hated looking at my chart, it read Obese Patient has such and such.  I hate that word obese.  I prefer the good old days, when I was just FAT!!!!!

I stayed up for Letterman's monologue, before my eyes were to heavy to take anymore.  Shortly before 2 am I woke for the first of many nightly trips to the john.   This trip would be different.   I thought the noise from the street was the usual bar closing scene.   When I pulled back the drapes in my living room,  the view from my window was surreal.    Had I still been sleeping, I would have thought I was watching a vivid dream (or nightmare) unfold before my very eyes.   A ladder attacked to a fire truck rose before my eyes.   So close I could reach out my window and hand the firemen in the bucket a bottle of water if I choose to.  Down on street level there was a neighborhood favorite  Thornton's Fenway Grill with flames shooting out it's now broken windows.  It's Green Monster green awning was burning and firemen were knocking it to the ground leaving just the skeleton frame work that held it up.   The restaurant sits on the corner of Peterborough and Kilmarnock Streets, and was attacked to 5 other eateries and a dry cleaner.   The fire spread to all adjoining businesses with total destruction.   Along with Thornton's, was Greek Isle, El Pelon (the best burrito in Boston),  Rod Dee Thai,  Sorrento's,  and Umi Japanese Sushi Bar.   These places were more than just neighborhood fare.   Out of towners dined before and after a game at Fenway Park.   Thornton's Sunday brunch drew lines, and it was the place to watch all the major sporting events.   Daisy knew when I walked in the house with take out from anyone of these places she was going to have a treat that night.

Here it is some 10 hours after I first looked out and day light still has hoses shooting water into hot spots.  the scene looks like a bomb dropped from the sky.  I see pictures on the news of such devastation and wonder how you pick up after something like this.  I know some of the owners and I know they have the resilience to go on, but it's like looking at a family member lye dead before your eyes.  On more than one occasion I have jokingly express fear should these building ever burn down they would build a soaring building in it's place  taking my view of The Prudential Building and downtown Boston.   I can't imagine with the amount of damage that these building sustained, that total demolishing has to occur.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention the Boston Fire Department and the unbelievable job they did and are still doing.   I watched as more that one slipped on the ice that formed almost as soon as the water hit the buildings only  to get up and do there job like nothing happened.  Fire is one of my biggest fears and I pray I never need the men who come out rain or shine day or night.   God bless these men and there families, and God bless those who lost there livelihood to this fire.  A grown man cries in the Fenway, but I too shall overcome.

What a horrible thing to happen to the 16 years old son of John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston.   While vacationing in the Bahamas it appears that Jett had a seizure,  fell and hit his head.  Officials say he laid there for hours while the Travolta's deny this.  It is also rumored that because of their affiliation with the church of Scientology,  Travolta refused to give him anti-seizure medication.   One thing is certainly clear, this is a terrible thing to happen to any family.  As someone who lost a brother at the age of 16, I know the toll it takes on a family.  The parents and sibling of this young victim will live a life time of second guessing and wondering what if.  I along with you all can only send my sincere condolences

Flight 59 from Amsterdam to Boston, landed with 1 extra passenger today.   Susan who is believed to be from Uganda gave birth to a 6 1/2 lb baby girl.   Passengers aboard the flight applauded when the baby let out her first cry.  The woman was 8 and a half months pregnant.  Certain airlines won't allow a pregnant woman in her final trimester to fly, but I guess  Northwest Airlines have no such rule.  It is for this reason, Doctors recommend you don't fly when so late into your pregnancy.  There was a radiation oncologist from Minnesota and a family practitioner from Methuen who help deliver the baby.

I have a question or two about this birth.

Will the mother get a bill for extra baggage? (She had her 2 carry on limit)

Is the baby considered a US citizen?  (She was born over the Atlantic over 6 hours into an 8 hour flight. and it is a US airline)

Got a good name for the baby?  (How about Delta)

Mother and child are doing well in a Boston Hospital and what a nice happy ending to her ordeal and the Year.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!

Those crazy Alaskans are at it again.  Bristol Palin gave birth to a 7lb 4oz baby boy.    Daddy Levi Johnston when he finally got his finger out of his nose was heard to say: SHAZAM!     They named the baby Tripp.  No that's not a old family name,  it's what Levi's mother (who was recently arrested for selling Oxycontin)  was heard saying when she saw the baby for the first time.   "What a Tripp".    A summer wedding may be in the works for the lovely couple.   Levi's momma  says the couple were going to get married even before they found out she was pregnant.   If you believe that, I have a bridge in Nome I'd like to sell you.  Bristol daddy Todd Palin was so happy, all he could say was Surprise Surprise Surprise!!!!

Meryl Streep is Sister Aloysius,  Philip Seymour Hoffman is Father Flynn and Amy Adams is Sister James.   They along with a supporting cast of other adults as well as ensemble of  children bring you right back to 1964  and the St. Nicholas  Church and  adjoining school set in the Bronx.   Streep is the principal and your old fashion nun that will slap you across the head if she sees you talking in church or not doing what your suppose to be doing in school.   You have a battle of wills between her and  her old fashion ways and Father Flynn (Hoffman) who wants to bring the church to the modern times.  Sister James (Adams) is the first to have suspicions  of the priest and the 12 year old alter boy.  Father Flynn has taken this young black boy under his "wing"  for fear as the only black kid in a Italian-Irish  school he'd have a hard time otherwise.   To say much more might ruin it for you.   I will say just one little thing.  The sermon about gossip is in my opinion right on the mark.   Streep and Adams are nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.  Phillip Seymour Hoffman gives a powerful performance.  Who could forget his 2005 Oscar win for "Capote".

There are so many great movies out there and I hope by Oscar time,  I will have seen more of them that I can make my annual predictions.  SEE YOU AT THE MOVIES........

Detroit has those wonderful   Lions,  but Boston has those Fantastic Patriots!

Detroit has those unbelievable Pistons, but Boston has those stupendous Celtics!

and yes Detroit has those formidable Tigers, but Boston has those World Champion Red Sox!

With all those first rate teams,  why would Fenwaydav be sad?   Yes friends it's a sad week here in Boston.  Our Fox Morning Team is losing one of our greats to Detroit.  Anqunette Jamison or has we know her has Q, is leaving snowy and chilly Boston for snowy and chilly Detroit.  Q has been with the morning team  here in Boston on Fox 25 since it started in 2003.   She is informative, as well as  charming, funny and not bad to look at either.  Her smile will brighten up your day.  She can even sing a mean Santa Baby.   I for one will miss Q and hope you guys love her and appreciate her as Boston does.  Our teams here in Boston have lost many a player to your teams, but none will be missed like Q.  Treat her well.

It's been 49 years since someone has been  put to death in N.H. for  for committing a crime.   Critics say the death penalty does not deter crimes.   I believe that also, it may not curb violence or stop people from committing heinous crimes.  But my belief is if you commit such a crime against humanity you must pay and if need be you must die!

Enter Michael Addison convicted of killing a Manchester N.H. Police Officer.  It has been determined by a jury of his peers that he have the dubious distinction of becoming the first to die by lethal injection in the State of New Hampshire in almost half a century.

Defense Attorneys are put on earth to fight for their clients.  They have saved many a innocent person and by the same token saved many a guilty person.  This time they LOST!  Thank the Good Lord.   They claimed Addison had a very abusive childhood.  They said he may have suffered possible brain damage from a mother who drank heavily during her pregnancy.  Well I say I feel bad for you,  but you made a decision to take a life and you must pay.  Many people have hard lives and don't murder because of it.

This sentence will have many appeals before it is carried out, if ever.   Is the appeals process fair.  I guess it's not for me to say, but I can say that it cost a lot of money to keep this man alive.  I hope the family of this Police Officer have some closure, but my guess is till this criminal lies dead like their son and husband and father they will not rest.

"If Ottis Toole was alive today he would be arrested for the abduction and murder of Adam Walsh on July 27, 1981."   Those were the words that came from the mouth of Hollywood, Florida Police Chief.   This bought a close to the 27 year investigation.   Or did it?????

6 year old Adam Walsh disappeared from a Sears store in a mall that was right across the street from the Hollywood Police Department.  The Chief said this case COULD and SHOULD have been closed years ago.  When he (Chief) took the position just a little more than a year ago, he vowed to close this case.  There were many years that this case went on without even a glance.

Ottis Toole the sleaze died in prison in 1996.  He was serving a life sentence for another case involving the death of another boy.  He twice confessed and recanted his involvment of this case.   His sister came forward and told police he confessed to the horrible death of little Adam while on his death bed.

There was a lot of shotty Police work in this case.  A piece of bloody carpet found in Tooles car was lost by police many years ago.  How do you lose a piece of bloody carpet?   I have never really heard who Adam was with at the store.   I never heard how a 6 year old boy was able to be away from whoever he was with.   Supposedly on this day,  a 17 year old security guard asked a handful of rowdy kids who were playing video games in the store to leave.   Adam was grouped with these kids then left alone outside.  To lay any blame on the Walsh family at this time would be cruel on my part.  They have suffered throughout the years.   But Folks a 6 year old boy left alone,  how sad.  You can't tell me 1981 was a kinder time and these things didn't happen.  It does and it did.

All I can say in closing  is Adam who would have been 32 years old I hope you have had a peaceful rest and to you Ottis Toole I hope you spend the rest of time rotting in Hell.......

It's getting to the point where I feel like the next step is them telling me how many sheets of toilet paper I can use at a time.   This Boston Public Health Commission  is making decisions for us that are now bordering on illegal.   When they make a move to shut down cigar bars, but they have ten years to do so and can apply for another ten years something stinks and it's not those cigars.  I won't get into to the ban on college campuses, because I'd like to see them enforce that one.  The ban on tobacco products in pharmacies just doesn't sit right with me either.  First of all those bans are in effect almost immediately.   (I'm to lazy to go back to the story, but I think it's a couple of weeks).   Now friends is this fair?   Lets take any drug store.  I'll pick CVS.   CV S's pharmacy is just a fraction of their business.   They and other super drug stores have become mini markets for a whole assortment of products.  I believe this ban unfairly takes a part of their business.   Why doesn't the BPHC stop a store like 7-11 from selling aspirin or cough medicine? Is it fair to Stop and Shop you can buy cereal in CVS? Speaking of Stop and Shop, will it become illegal to sell cigarettes in super markets that have drug stores?  Right next door to said CVS is a liquor store or grocery that can sell cigarettes,  that's not fair.  Hey look I don't smoke anymore and truly don't care where you can buy them.   I don't drink anymore, so close all bars and liquor stores.  No smoking in out door cafes.  Soon a knock will come at your door because rumor has it you are smoking in the bathroom.   I'll be the first to admit, that certain smoking bans have proved helpful and healthy to us all.  But till the day that cigarettes a deemed totally illegal, They should back off.  Adults  know the dangers of smoking.  Sky diving is also dangerous.  I want less government in my life.  Every time a dumb law like this gets approved, all I can think about is 1984.  I am not ready for Big Brother......

A Story tells that two friends were walking through the desert.  During some point of the journey they had an argument,  and one friend slapped the other in the face.

The one who got slapped was hurt,  but without saying anything, wrote in the sand:

Today My Best Friend Slapped Me In The Face.

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath.  The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire (heavy often deep mud or slush) and started drowning, but the friend saved him.

After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone:

Today My Best Friend Saved My Life.

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?"  The other friend replied "When some hurts us we should write it down in the sand where winds of forgiveness can erase it away.  But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

Learn To Write Your Hurts In The Sand And To Carve Your Benefits In Stone.

They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to appreciate them,  a day to love them,  but then an entire life to forget them......

To all the friends I have made out here, I have learned to appreciate and love you.  I won't forget you......

Happiest Holidays to all of you.....

If a statement  I once heard "The louder they scream, the more guilty they are"  is true, then Chuck Turner is one guilty man.   From the moment this story broke till as we speak he has grabbed every opportunity to spit his venomous words at everyone but himself.  Everyone else is to blame. He's a liar and a theft and he and his buddy Ms. Wilkerson  are going to jail to pay for there sins.  I have a very funny feeling that these 2 a just the tip of the iceberg.  It's time to clean up Boston Politics.   Some people think these jobs are for life and that's not right.  There are a few jobs that may be for life, (Pope, Supreme Court Justice, President of Cuba) Boston Politics should not be one.  Familiarity Breeds Contempt!!!!

How discusting a man tried to rape her.   She was offered a ride and all she did wrong was accept it.  How stupid can you be.  In your 19 years you haven't seen stories of girls and boys who got into cars with strangers.  It wasn't like he rode by and scooped her into his vehicle.  She willfully got in when he offered her a ride.  What had to be going through her mind.   At his arraignment the man who looked triple her age stood there like the creep that he was.   Now don't get me wrong, I am in no way saying she deserved what she got but how the heck did you make it to North Eastern University with as little brains as you have shown.   Did you just get off the train from a strange planet?   Honey, this is life in the big city (unfortunately). You young lady are very lucky that a Saugus Police Officer saw something strange going on and saved your @SS.  Needless to say I hope you learned a valuable lesson.

There may be a population of people out there that only know OJ as man who went on trial for the murder of his wife and the young man who had the misfortune of being with her.   They may remember the circus of a trial and the disbelief when he was  acquitted and set free.   The two little children now without a mother,  and the Goldman's with the loss of their son Ron.  I could hear Nicole Simpson  and Ron Goldman scream from their graves.    I was certain OJ would get off again.  As he stood before the Judge in shackles and the tears flowing down his face I thought the sentence would be none or light.

If you were watching the Movie (and I am sure one day you will) this is the point where the camera starts fading from the court house and the music intensifies and you see OJ running through the Airport Terminal to get his Avis Rent-a-Car.   When his football career ended his life of endless endorsements began.  He was popular and loved.  He could have gone on to a possible politcal career.   Like all good politicians he even had a minor movie career.   When the unthinkable happened we thought it could not be true.   As the weeks went on and the three ring circus of a murder trial went on his dream team made a mockery of the system.   His acquittal left a community divided.

The camera now comes back to real time and before the judge he stands again.  Now all these years later jail time that may take him to the end of his life.  Did it take all these years for this to really happen.  There will be some that say this is to get even for the time before.   It may very well be.  If this was the only thing that happened in his life he might not be going away for the period he is.  Someone much wiser than me in my youth told me "you may get away with it now but sooner or later it will catch up with you".  Well Mr. Juice, you will have plenty of years to think about what might have been.  So now his two children who already lost their mother will lose contact with the man they knew as their father.   He is lead off to jail and the camera fades to black and the credits roll....THE END!
