Another Slap in the Face

~~~   or   ~~~
Some of Us Still Respect America
Did you happen to catch Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper's "State of the City" address today?
The powers that be decided to start things off with "The Star Spangled Banner", a tune some consider appropriate for the event.
They hired a local jazz singer, a Ms. Rene Marie, to perform the National Anthem.  Unfortunately, Ms. Marie chose to turn her performance into a political and racial statement, singing the "black national anthem" instead.
No, really.
From KOA Radio:
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper says he doesn’t think the woman brought in to sing the National Anthem at his State of the City Address meant to offend anyone or be disrespectful.  He says his staff didn’t know she would not sing the National Anthem.
Before the Mayor’s speech in the atrium of the Webb Building, a singer named Rene Marie was introduced to sing the National Anthem.  Miss Marie sang the lyrics to the Black National Anthem, set to the tune of the Star Spangled Banner.   Denver City Councilman Charlie Brown says he was shocked and disappointed. Brown thinks anyone who is asked to sing the National Anthem should have sung the National Anthem, and not another song.
Now, the Mayor's office expressed much surprise that their choice of vocalists would choose to turn this event into an activists's platform.
It doesn't look to me like they did their homework.
If you go to Ms. Marie's website, she describes herself as an activist in the very first sentence.  You don't have to read very far to understand that she is a racist as well.
The Mayor's office also expressed much surprise that their choice of vocalists would choose to turn this event into a a political statement.
If you read around Colorado's bLogs, you knew several weeks ago that Ms. Marie had this in store for Denverites:
From MileHiGayGuy.com's blog (5/13/08)
Rene Marie is going to sing her version of the national anthem at the 2008 State of the City Address in Denver. Her music is always full of surprises, so there's no telling what she'll do! I can guarantee you, though, no one will be sleeping...
Here's what really troubles me:  The Mayor's office expressed so much surprise about this catastrophe...
Did they not look at their vocalists' own website?
How is it that the "MileHiGayGuy" knew that this activist had this nonsense planned OVER A MONTH AGO, but the Mayor's office had no clue whatsoever?
Is our Mayor's office so inept that they can't see a problem like this coming?
Great Scott, these are the people in charge in the event of a terrorist attack, and they can't read?!?
The short answer would be no, these liberals in Denver are not that stupid.  They knew this would happen.  They wanted it too.  Stick it to the Americans every chance you get, that's the libtard way.  Keep it up, libtards.  PLEASE keep it up.
So, Mr. Mayor, why didn't you just hire the local U.S. Army choir to sing the Anthem?
Do you guys have something against America?
Never mind, don't answer that question.
‘do your own thing’ has spread across every hill and dale and it seems through the mayor’s office as well now. that may be fine for hill and dale but i fear it is not appropriate where our government institutions and history are concerned.
i would compare changing the words to our national anthem to say uh carving a new face on the lincoln memorial .... desecration is desecration.
our institutions should be above the fray of political and personal disorder.
there are readily solutions to any problem. if any group inside the usa feels left out then that group should make every effort to help youngsters with their daily home work, getting them graduated and off to great employment.
success begins with each person. success does not included offending others.
She referred to what she did as an "artistic statement" or something like that. Wonder if that's what Roseanne was trying to achieve when she butchered our National Anthem, then grabbed her crotch. To me both are as offensive as singing it in Spanish. And SHAME on the Mayor's office for their blatant negligence!
hi dimur - i recall in some year like 1915 our lovely congresses accepted the spanish version as 'okay'.
at least it is the same respectful words unlike these disrespectful two witches you mention.
Hi Marilyn - I think I'm talking about a different Spanish version of the National Anthem. Some English guy wrote it a couple of years ago in deference to our growing population of too-lazy-to-learn-English "immigrants". The lyrics are quite a bit different from the original version, which I consider the ONLY acceptable one.
I think this mayor and his loony liberal buddies are beginning to ruin this city. There is just simple no excuse for what took place.
I read this lady had the opportunity to go to Russia and was asked if she was proud of being an American. She said she felt that she wasn't. Then maybe she should had remained in Russia.
I am so sick of Americans who cant find who they are and want out of life and try to blame others and their country for it! Russia is not free Marie! Try looking in the mirror for why you feel so miserable about your self for once!!
I love american and damn proud of her!
I think you guys need to re-read the 1st Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America.
Does the 1st Amendment allow racists to insult our country in public and on our dollar? Hmm, must have missed that...
Thanks, folks, for sharing your thoughts.
If you've been following the aftermath of this stupid act of selfishness, have you noticed how UNapologetic most of the Democrats are about all this?
They just don't get it, do they?
Spot-on, Marilyn. The "express yourself" crowd needs to understand where the line is. I mean, we're (mostly) tolerant people, but you have to give all due respect.
Hey DiMur, I'm with you on the spanish "anthem". It's not a fair translation, and it serves to further divide this Nation. The spanish-American anthem? No habla.
Nice video, zombie. There is a severe double-standard in this Country, and it needs to be addressed. I can't sing "Dixie" before Atlanta's State of the City, now can I?
Hey Dre, I read the same thing about the Colorado girl who is going to play for Russia in the Olympics. She said she'd rather play for another country than sit at home. So how is she going to feel if her team beats team USA? Happy? Vindicated?
This isn't a First Amendment issue, Stranger. She was retained by the taxpayers of Denver to perform a specific task (sing THE National Anthem). She did not. Citizens in attendance were told to rise, put their hands on their hearts, and then were subjected to divisive, racist diatribe diguised as "art". Artistic statement, indeed. If she came out and said it was a racial statement, at least she'd have my respect.
So they have a black national anthem. Fine. I'm sure they have "anthems" for gays, hispanics, and liberals, too. That doesn't make them THE National Anthem.
THE National Anthem includes ALL Americans, which is why it is the only one we need.
Get ready for more of this disgusting behavior if America is so dumb to elect Obama. So very typical. If you want to see what happens read the Augusta Chronicle online regarding the county commission and the Augusta Coliseum Authority. What a joke. Nothing gets done in Augusta due to race. Rev. Wright did have a couple of truths...1) Obama will say anything to get elected 2) His church has disdain toward any race other than black. The racist rantings that Obama sat through for 20+ years reveals his heart. As someone said they would rather Rev. Wright be a political adviser than spiritual adviser as his spriritual adviser that goes to the soul of the man. That alone should scare the hell out of all rational thinking Americans.
I think National is the key word here. The Anthem is for every race&gender. I wonder what kind of outrage there would be if there was a White,Hispanic or Asian National Anthem? Just one more example of the new I'm not proud of my country Era. Wake up people!
The tune has been referenced in many other musical compositions.
* The city of Philadelphia commissioned Richard Wagner to write a piece in honor of the centenary of U.S. independence. His American Centennial March uses a recurring allusion to "The Star-Spangled Banner" in its main theme.
* The nineteenth-century American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk incorporated both "The Star-Spangled Banner" and "Yankee Doodle" in his piano composition The Union.
* Giacomo Puccini controversially used the opening phrases of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as a theme for the character of Pinkerton in his opera Madama Butterfly.
* The last of Leopold Godowsky's set of thirty piano pieces titled Triakontameron is "Requiem (1914–1918): Epilogue", which concludes with a full-blown romantic arrangement of the anthem.
* The paraphrase of the first stanza is used in the score of American Panorama (1933) by Daniele Amfitheatrof.
* The first verse of the George M. Cohan song, "The Yankee Doodle Boy", contains the line, "O, say, can you see / Anything about a Yankee that's a phony?"
* The title tune of the 1960s musical Hair contains the lines (sung to the usual tune) "O, say, can you see / my eyes? If you can / then my hair's too short!"
* In the musical 1776 the song "Cool, Cool Considerate Men" starts and ends with the beginning bars of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and begins with the lyrics "Oh say do you see what I see?"
* The song is used in the multi-media performance piece "Home of the Brave" by artist/musician Laurie Anderson.
* In Stephen Sondheim's Broadway musical, Assassins (1
I'm a Dad, a construction contractor, a foodie, an artist, and a patriot. I'm also very afraid. I used to live in the United States, but I now reside in latin America (and I never even had to move!). I like to argue current events with facts (along with simple, reasonable human logic). I don't suffer fools gladly, so liberals, please bring your facts (if you have any). I'm a huge Denver sports fan (30 years on the bandwagon), but my favorite teams are, by far, the ones my kids play on.
