NEW LONDON, N.H. -- Hilary Cleveland felt a tad the traitor on Friday evening, as she prepared to toss fruit in the porcelain bowl from China that was a gift from Barbara and George H.W. Bush. Hours before, she had taken the helm of the GOP Women for Kerry Steering Committee in this battleground state.

In truth, she left the Republican Party months ago, her opposition to the war in Iraq prompting her to change her lifelong political affiliation from Republican to ''undeclared." It was not an idle move for a Republican stalwart, the widow of James Colgate Cleveland, a 10-term congressman who was the senior Bush's regular paddleball partner when both served in the US House of Representatives. Cleveland died in 1995.

''George and Barbara are very dear friends. But this war, so wrong to begin with, is destroying the image of America as a peace-loving country in the world," she said. ''I know the president would say that he is 'liberating' Iraq but I don't think that Iraqis who don't have running water, electricity, a job, or safety on their streets would agree with him. It's fair to say he has disappointed me."

Hilary Cleveland had expected to be as supportive of George W. Bush's presidency as she had been of his candidacy in 2000. She organized vigorously for him then, hosting his mother on a campaign swing through this bucolic village in the shadows of Mounts Sunapee and Kearsarge. She was finance chairwoman of the senior Bush's presidential primary campaign in New Hampshire in 1980. In 1990, President Bush appointed her to the International Joint Commission, which acts as an intermediary in boundary water and air pollution disputes between the United States and Canada.

''It was a wonderful job he gave me," she said as she snapped the ends of green beans for the dinner she was preparing for her son, Lincoln, and his wife at her Main Street farmhouse. ''Born on Lincoln's Day, he is the real Republican," she laughed, noting that he alone among her children disapproves of her public efforts to unseat the president. ''We won't be talking politics tonight!"

As an adjunct professor of political history at Colby-Sawyer, a small liberal arts college just down the street from the Cleveland homestead, Hilary Cleveland talks and thinks a lot about politics at an age when others might be content to enjoy a quiet retirement. ''We have the future to think of," she said, citing her urgent concern for the threatened environment, the ballooning deficit, and the faltering status of the United States in the international community.

''Jim would be horrified," she said of her late husband's likely reaction to Bush administration policies that have created record $400 billion deficits. ''Republicans are fiscal conservatives. Cutting taxes at the same time you are spending billions for this war makes no sense. My father used to say, 'When the going gets tough, tighten your belt; you can't spend what you don't have.' That's always made sense to me. It's really a Republican idea."

But, mostly, it is Bush's doctrine of preemptive war that pushed Hilary Cleveland into the camp of Massachusetts Senator John F. Kerry, the Democratic presidential nominee.

She supported Bush's military action in Afghanistan, just as she supported his father's Gulf War in 1991. ''The goals were clear and limited and the threats were real; Afghanistan was harboring terrorists and Iraq had invaded Kuwait," she said.

''This war is very different. I think he is usurping an authority he does not have. He has alienated our allies, destroyed our relations in the Muslim world, and actually invited terrorists into Iraq. I think Kerry is our best hope to get us out of Iraq and reestablish our diplomatic relations in the world."

She has not spoken to her friends in Kennebunkport about her change of mind. ''I should write them a note," she said. ''It's awkward. Parents, of course, are so proud of their children."

For the main reason of not supporting a one world government with open borders, I could care less what the world thinks of the USA.

Being #1 doesn't always mean everyone else likes you historian. And if your goal is to convert people as you've stated before, I would suggest you take a Dale Carnegie class and learn the basics in communicating. A fundamental key that you are missing is simple tolerance for others and their views!

Well to add to that Powerball, to convert anyone you must convience them that your postion is sincere, unless you are not trying to convert but to fundamentalize them. Thats what OBL and others do to call on Jihad. They just program hate reguardless of truth, because the agenda is more important in the pursuit of power instead of leadership.

They nemisis of the entire left vs. right in this country. Some want to lead, and that means having to do the unpopular things sometimes... Others simply pursue power and once they have it are unable to lead. (sort of like our current legislative branch today)

Besides... what would you expect from a site like commondreams or Daily KOS anyways... These two sites make even MoveON look moderate!

I remember when Bing tried to pass off commondreams posts as inert and full of truth... nobody bought it then... nobody will buy it now.

You, PB said: "I could care less what the world thinks of the USA." Are you serious? I cannot believe you, or any American would state that. I see you do no International traveling? If you did, you would rescind that statement. If you were a US Ambassador, you would rescind that statement. If you want a world with universal freedom for all and one without war, you would rescind that statement. And lastly, a rational American would never say that. Are you upset at the moment? And please try to contain your comments without an insult and I will do the same for YOU.
And in the case of the whining child because he did not like what he read, if your pack had never whined in the first place by first insulting me, then perhaps I'd be nicer to your 5 or 6. I can be very diplomatic but first, one has to be treated with respect to get respect. Try me. Others have, and have had no problem. Outside of your 5 or 6, I hear no one else complaining. Even the Mods who I have never met, who are perhaps more observant than anyone on this site, have never disrespected me the way you 5 or 6 have. Again, try me. If you cannot be nice in your comments and they are off-topic as most of the 5 or 6 bloggers are when commenting on my posts, then I'll delete any of you. Better yet, just don't insult. Dale Carnegie you have mentioned several times so far. Did you take his course? If you get upset often maybe blogging is not for you?

When you 5 or 6 CONS learn that this site is for ALL THE PEOPLE, and gain that tolerance for others and their view is when PIGS fly. I am trying to be nice here. But the continuous spin of truth, where the real blame originates, is usually found w/in you 5 or 6. Why? It is because I do not go to your Posts and comment ever anymore. Once in a blue moon when I absolutely have to defend a very off-beat comment, is the only time your will find me commenting on your posts. When I see the same ole same ole, I keep my distance. And I do not try to convert anyone but rather post articles of interest and let the reader decide for themselves. I have stated this several times. Quit twisting.

I see no reason to repeat myself historian, you may not agree with what I said and that's fine, but you can rest assured that if I typed it and hit the done button--I meant it.

I'm not going to be duped into thinking the rest of the world wants what's best for the only SUPERPOWER. This rhetoric about the world and it's lack of respect for us is a liberal talking point historian. Conservatives don't see it that way, thus one of our big differences.

You want civil debate with me historian you can start by not refering to me as a 6 or 7 con. I am my own man, with my own opinions, and my own beliefs. And your methods of using a fear mongering manuever to convert us to whatever you think is best only work on children. We're grown-ups here, I think I've mentioned that before!

But yet you continue to disagree like a mad child by lashsing out with insults? More twist. Soon the 5 or 6 will be 2 or 3 then maybe the Pack mentality, which latley is still occuring on this site just under different multiable screennames; will someday realize that the one for all and all for one mentality was the polite way of discourse. Bush has continued to show that he is here to lead. Liberals will say its a dead horse to bring up the 90s and Clinton, but the issue of popularity, is what lead to our inaction to engage an enemy that was already waging war against us. The claim that Bush has ruined Americas reputation is a very DANGEROUS mentality from the left! It translated to everyone else and so stated by OBL that America is unwilling to fight or defend itself. The mighty USA is scared of bloodshed and will cowar from any battle. Then they proved it by attacking us over and over and we did NOTHING except tear down the military, and run it into the ground passing out group hugs to those why later would blow us up!

This is a very defining difference between liberals and conservatives. Even the military is continuing to flush out all the Clinton generals! Time to show the world we are warriors and are also willing to fight without hesitation for our interests... that is the message Bush has had to send out after loosing the respect of the world.

So what are you saying here historian, I have to agree with you! I have a right to be, think, and say what I want. If you don't like that, it's your problem and not mine!!!
If my initial comment is an insult, you ought to think about growing a thicker skin.

It's my belief that you use scare tactics and misrepresentations of many people, words, and policies to argue your leftist talking points.

You have the responsibility to change that perception historian, not me!!

Everything in our Nations's history and character demonstrates that we will gravely punish those who crave surrender!!

Powerball---It goes back a few months and it only takes one insult to start. If you don't like what I post and what I say, then here's a simple solution. Don't come around anymore. You see me coming into you blog criticizing? No. I don't even read your blogs. I haven't for sometime now, let alone make a comment. So say goodbye and move on. I don't ask you here. And if still want to appear, be civil. Everything you pasted that I said you took from MY post. Bye.

Wow! Historian makes a comment with a potential insult to my wife in a post he wants to discribe the negatives of insults with, then when I call you out on taking a shot at my family, you actually DELETE it?

Wow! Talk about a desperate, and poor taste individual... Go ahead.. delete this one too! I will just reference this in a blog of my own where you can't delete it.

I use to go by the name “bush is evil.” My opinion, he is. But the name seemed to be a bloody bit too much for the last few remaining Bush supporters to handle. They all cried foul! Disrespect! They labeled me as a Democrat even though I never once promoted any democrat in my posts nor have I ever bankrolled or endorsed the democrats as my party. This bush coterie tried everything they could to constrain my intellective pursuits. They failed. I believe that Bush has to expiate his wrongdoings. I voted for both Bush’s. How was I to know? I was as naive as the hanger-on Bush supporters of today. I began to probe all bush allegations. At first, I refused to believe. I was in denial, again, much like the Bushies of today. To my disbelief, I realized that it was all true. I was crushed. I told myself I’d never vote again. Bruised, I picked myself up and brushed me-self off. Now, my goal is too help the last of the Bushies to become aware through thought reform. It's a tough job as many are just good old country boys and gals that won't give in to the truths that their President has been less than honest with those who put their trust in him. And, they have to be open enough to want to change when just possibly it could be for the better. Many Bushies think that it's not American like to want better for our nation and our planet in these turbulent times. And that brings me to why I am changing my screen-name. Maybe out of respect to the ones the name angers, is why I am doing it. For them. I don’t hate anyone. I love my country. But whatever the reason was, BUSHISEVIL distracted the Bush loyalist from my re-education process. Rather than intelligently discuss my post, some angrily got caught up in a name. A name that of no-one they have ever met; No clue or knew anything about. All this flap because of an immature obsession over a screen name and all after a screen name that they perceived an evident personality from. They could have physic abilities. Do you think so? Well, maybe now that I call myself, "Historian" their anger might subside enough to allow them to intelligently debate the issue at hand rather than rage with anger from ignorance. My statement only applies to those who were guilty of and most of the Bush supporters who frequent this site are good, hard working Americans smart enough to not let a name push their buttons.
