VIDEO: Bush Waves The Mexican Flag

Watch it:

bush flag

In recent weeks, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets all across the nation to protest right-wing immigration proposals. As Media Matters has documented, the fact that some demonstrators carry the Mexican flag has elicited the ire of conservative pundits. For example, Robert Novak has said:

I am no hard-liner on immigration who wants to expel 11 million illegal immigrants, but flags are a symbol of national identity. The student brandishing the Mexican flag signals divided loyalty or perhaps loyalty to a foreign power.

But President Bush himself has publicly brandished the Mexican flag. ThinkProgress has obtained a copy of a five-minute ad that the 2004 Bush campaign distributed to Hispanic supporters. In the ad, Bush can be seen waving a Mexican flag while embracing a young girl. (Watch the full ad HERE.)

What Novak and others fail to understand is that carrying the flag is not a sign of divided loyalty but a demonstration of an American value — understanding and appreciating immigrant culture.

I'd be lying if I said that I was not SEVERELY outraged at the way he has handled this immigration thing...

You might be surprised at how often I agree with you, historian.

This is, without a doubt, one of those times.

I am glad that we had a Republican at the helm for this war on terrorism, but I wish we had a Republican at the helm for this war on the Latin American invasion.

I connot reach the conclusion that President Bush Is Evil, but I must agree with your asessment that, in this instance, President Bush does not have the interests of the American citizens at heart.

Bush, Kennedy, Salazar, McCain, and all of the other "representatives" who wish to "de-Anglo" America must go. The sooner the better.

The grass is much greener on common ground, isn't it, historian? lol.

What we will see now will be the conseravtive giant in America wake up and snatch back the control of our government. It isn't so much a democrat/republican thing, but conservative values have been trampled for a long time. Bush is a republican, but nowhere a conservative.

The smell of a McGovern blowout in 08 gets stronger, and the winner will be a conservative. Democrats stand no chance so long as they allow the radical liberals to define them. This immigration bill literally defined people on both sides. McCain is toast, many old republicans now have had their moderate to left postions exposed.

I mean come on! How many times are we going to allow a northeastern liberal like Kennedy write and shape immigration policy!! He blew it in the 60s where everything he said wouldn't happen did, then in the 80s he framed up Reagans one of few ridiculous Amnesty bills, and that failed. We have a 2006 bill for a fence, yet almost NOTHING has been done, and now Kennedy and Bush expect us to trust them with this?..... That flushing noise is America cleaning out Washington...

Abunai, I completely agree with your assessment of Bush, all of you actually. And thankfully, McCain is toast now. The idiot doesn't realize it yet though.

We MUST controll our borders before any legislation is past, otherwise we are pissin in the wind.

The ONLY good thing about THIS bill is that it demonstrates and exposes, once and for ALL, that the Republican Party Leadership is ANYTHING BUT Conservative in nature and deed..
That THEY are Democrat C/Rinos who'll ALWAYS cave in to the Democrat Party on EVERY Issue EVEN when THEY were in the Majority..HOW much More So now that they aren't....

I never thought I would say this, but this is exactly the part of Bush I hate. And if he could get re elected I never would vote for him again because of this.

I use to go by the name “bush is evil.” My opinion, he is. But the name seemed to be a bloody bit too much for the last few remaining Bush supporters to handle. They all cried foul! Disrespect! They labeled me as a Democrat even though I never once promoted any democrat in my posts nor have I ever bankrolled or endorsed the democrats as my party. This bush coterie tried everything they could to constrain my intellective pursuits. They failed. I believe that Bush has to expiate his wrongdoings. I voted for both Bush’s. How was I to know? I was as naive as the hanger-on Bush supporters of today. I began to probe all bush allegations. At first, I refused to believe. I was in denial, again, much like the Bushies of today. To my disbelief, I realized that it was all true. I was crushed. I told myself I’d never vote again. Bruised, I picked myself up and brushed me-self off. Now, my goal is too help the last of the Bushies to become aware through thought reform. It's a tough job as many are just good old country boys and gals that won't give in to the truths that their President has been less than honest with those who put their trust in him. And, they have to be open enough to want to change when just possibly it could be for the better. Many Bushies think that it's not American like to want better for our nation and our planet in these turbulent times. And that brings me to why I am changing my screen-name. Maybe out of respect to the ones the name angers, is why I am doing it. For them. I don’t hate anyone. I love my country. But whatever the reason was, BUSHISEVIL distracted the Bush loyalist from my re-education process. Rather than intelligently discuss my post, some angrily got caught up in a name. A name that of no-one they have ever met; No clue or knew anything about. All this flap because of an immature obsession over a screen name and all after a screen name that they perceived an evident personality from. They could have physic abilities. Do you think so? Well, maybe now that I call myself, "Historian" their anger might subside enough to allow them to intelligently debate the issue at hand rather than rage with anger from ignorance. My statement only applies to those who were guilty of and most of the Bush supporters who frequent this site are good, hard working Americans smart enough to not let a name push their buttons.
