Confrontation at the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago

(See photos below and Jo's article on the 1968 Convention.)

Some confrontations are planned. Some are spontaneous. This one was planned, but nothing happened the way it was supposed to. Many months before the Chicago convention, experienced movement activists decided that it would be an ideal place to confront "the system" and demand an end to the Viet Nam war. They invited one hundred thousand people to come and demonstrate. The City of Chicago responded by refusing to grant permits for any marches and for only one rally.
The expected masses did not show. Only a few thousand people participated in the demonstrations; most of those were local, or had come to support their favorite Democratic candidates. They were swept into the protests by events more than by intention. Outnumbered by law enforcement by five to one, 589 people would be arrested while the Democrats met in August, and many more injured.
The major battles were fought in Lincoln Park, three miles north of the Loop (the city center), when the police tried to enforce evening curfews. A legal rally in Grant Park ended when the police clubbed a teenager who was lowering an American flag, and others who tried to protect him.
Mayor Richard J. Daley called out 7,500 members of the Illinois National Guard to reinforce the 12,000 police officers. Wednesday night they tried to remove everyone -- mostly party volunteers, candidate supporters and tourists -- from Michigan Avenue in front of the Hilton hotel, which was the convention headquarters. While the nominating speeches were being given at the amphitheater several miles away, these unlucky people were pushed through plate glass windows when caught between Guard and police as they dispersed the crowd.
TV cameras in front of the Hilton captured the confrontation. When these images were played on monitors at the convention itself -- about an hour later -- they disrupted the proceedings far more than the demonstrators could have had they succeeded in their efforts to march. "The whole world is watching" became more than just a slogan. What an official report later described as a "police riot" did more damage to Chicago's reputation and the fortunes of the Democratic Party than anything the protestors could have done.

OK... now we are getting ENTIRE articles with full illustrations? (hmmm.. LinkODay fantastic job on moderating!)

No need to look at photos, The point in all this is NOT to restrict Police while protesters raise an entire town on issues these student aged punks couldn't even spell much less get past a talking point.

Freedom of speach is just that, it is NOT a waiver to responsibility for your ACTIONS. Smashing out windows, destroying public property, rolling vehicles, setting fires are ALL illegal actions seperate from someone exercising free speach. People try to associate the two together in a lame attempt to excuse their "ACTIONS."

Police have a responsiblity to protect the people and property as well. Otherwise where is my right as a business owner to be protected from illegal activity? Can I come to your private home and take your car in your driveway and set fire to it in the name of free speach? NO!

I remember those times too..THESE people weren't "invited" to these things..THEY were bused in..It was the SAME people at MOST of the different locations who were INSTRUCTED to incite riots, damage property, provoke the police with rock throwing and occasionally even gunfire..
I ALSO remember that at the time the prevalent opinion of the American Public was to throw them ALL in jail and LET them ROT..
It took " America's Most Trusted Communist", Walter Cronkite, to turn the tide in favor of the anti- war crowd, JUST as Nixon engaged in the first winning stategy of the WAR..
Successful enough to prompt the release of our POWs ...

Well not only that, but these Hippies so concerned about Vietnam POW/MIAs continue to spout off the numbers of Vietnam, yet don't take it back further to like Korea that has about 8,000 POW/MIA and even higher for WWII!
The Walter Cronkites of the world were not interested in that, so they didn't shape the American posture for it.

I use to go by the name “bush is evil.” My opinion, he is. But the name seemed to be a bloody bit too much for the last few remaining Bush supporters to handle. They all cried foul! Disrespect! They labeled me as a Democrat even though I never once promoted any democrat in my posts nor have I ever bankrolled or endorsed the democrats as my party. This bush coterie tried everything they could to constrain my intellective pursuits. They failed. I believe that Bush has to expiate his wrongdoings. I voted for both Bush’s. How was I to know? I was as naive as the hanger-on Bush supporters of today. I began to probe all bush allegations. At first, I refused to believe. I was in denial, again, much like the Bushies of today. To my disbelief, I realized that it was all true. I was crushed. I told myself I’d never vote again. Bruised, I picked myself up and brushed me-self off. Now, my goal is too help the last of the Bushies to become aware through thought reform. It's a tough job as many are just good old country boys and gals that won't give in to the truths that their President has been less than honest with those who put their trust in him. And, they have to be open enough to want to change when just possibly it could be for the better. Many Bushies think that it's not American like to want better for our nation and our planet in these turbulent times. And that brings me to why I am changing my screen-name. Maybe out of respect to the ones the name angers, is why I am doing it. For them. I don’t hate anyone. I love my country. But whatever the reason was, BUSHISEVIL distracted the Bush loyalist from my re-education process. Rather than intelligently discuss my post, some angrily got caught up in a name. A name that of no-one they have ever met; No clue or knew anything about. All this flap because of an immature obsession over a screen name and all after a screen name that they perceived an evident personality from. They could have physic abilities. Do you think so? Well, maybe now that I call myself, "Historian" their anger might subside enough to allow them to intelligently debate the issue at hand rather than rage with anger from ignorance. My statement only applies to those who were guilty of and most of the Bush supporters who frequent this site are good, hard working Americans smart enough to not let a name push their buttons.
