Health Insurance Denied! Need surgery for brain malformation Aug 19, 2007 | 01:04 PM PST
Category: News Report This Post Featured On: MyFoxTampaBay I'm sorry to bother you, but I'm very desperate.  I have emailed and called every person I can think of, but nobody cares about what a 14 year old has to say.

My name is John-Michael and my sister's name is Sarah, we sent you another email but I don't think you got it because we never got an email from you.  Please, please help our mom. Our Mom is so nice and wonderful. Mom loves to spend time with us, play games, We love her so much. Mom has been very sick and bed ridden for long time. Mom has a rare brain malformation called Chiari Type 1 malformation. Its a very rare brain malformation, but you can find alot of good information online. My mom has had 4 brain surgeries , the first 2 were done wrong by a local doctor and 2 more to correct the first 2 surgeries. Mom' s symptoms came back and she has been from one doctor to another for over a year now, every doctor locally tells mom "its all in her head" there is nothing wrong with her and they dismiss her.  Mom finally mailed her mri to the Chiari institute in ny and they found what was causing moms pain. Mom is in pain 24/7 and has to spend all day in bed.  The doctors at the NY chiari institute say mom needs a surgery, this surgery is a new procedure they are doing for people like mom and this is such a new finding that the NY doctors haven't even published the findings of the study.  Mom needs this surgery is she'll ever is to have a normal life and be pain free. But the big problem is that mom now has an hmo and it doesn't cover doctors that are out of network. She spoke to the chiari institute billing man and he said that they no longer accept insurance, that way they can charge less for the procedure. Doesn't make sense to me... but mom needs her surgery. Please, please help our mom. we need our mom back. we need our active mom that takes us to the park, the pool, disney, etc. and we don't want to see mom in pain anymore.  Mom was crying because the billing may at the Chiari Institute told her the surgery is around $176K and mom says that is more than what our house is worth. She is desperate...  please help mom even is its only a little help. We will be forever grateful for your help.  I pray that you can do something to help our mom, she is a single mom, but she is our rock she is our everything. we don't know what we would do if mom has to go to heaven, we need our mom.  Please think about it and please see if you can help her. The Chiari institute has this new procedure and the doctors are working on publishing the results of doing this surgery. It would also help others with this illness if we do something to get the word out and doctors out there learn about the illness and how to treat it, instead of treating Chiari patients like Crazy people. (This illness is not known all that well, proof of that is my mom's first 2 brain surgeries were done wrong, It took 2 more surgeries to correct what was done first time around)

If you need to talk to our mom to get the details and the full story you can. I pray that The Lord will touch your heart and give you the need to help us.  Mom is so nice and so cool. She is the best mom in the world, even when she's sick she's a good mom and spends all her time with us. We just want her healthy and pain free.

I appreciate your time,  you don't know how hard it has been and how disappointing to send letters and emails to people I admire, just to realize they could care less.  Please see if you can help mom in any way.
Here is a link to one of many Chiari sites, just so you know I'm for real...   http://www.northshorelij.com/body.cfm?ID=6407   This is the place were Mom needs to go for surgery.

Thank you

This is really bad when we as Americans let this Childs mother die. We fly people over here from all around the world and offer free surgery’s to these people who have rare and sometimes fatal conditions. Yet we can not even help this woman who is right here in America to live. There is a cure and it is unavailable to her because she is a citizen with insurance just not the one they want.
When a child has to beg people to help save his mother and gets no response from anyone including the media. I what will become of these kids if they loose their mother, best friend and provider. No child needs to have this much weighing on their mind, let alone have to worry about the death of their mother. It is time America helps it's own.
I am looking to see if I can find a way to help these children. Please do the same. If FOX in Florida can not help maybe Fox in Colorado can.
We are one nation under God. Together we can help them.

Well said, Janet. Maybe the docs don't help people here for free because we are so lawsuit happy. Sad excuse, anyway.

There has to be more about this story than what we are being told. I almost bet there is a legal aspect to this that the mother is not signing off on, or the condition is inoperative.

This one does not pass the smell test.

I found this post on the Tampa Bay FOX blog site. I checked out the hospital. This is a real condition and it seems that unless you have the money you don't get the proper treatment.
Scribe2 - I agree there are to many lawsuit happy people. But this woman lives in pain and has had 2 surgeries that have not corrected the issue. I think that if someone would look into this and see why an American citizen who has insurance is being refused treatment. Or if this is a BS story then why is this 14 year old on the blog sites begging for help. I honestly don't believe that this is a fake story and my instinct tells me that this story is true. I wish that there was a way we could get someone to help this family. I would rather my money go to this family instead of going towards paying for illegals to get welfare and free housing. When a child cries for help and they are turned away what kind of future do they have to look forward to?

I'm sure it doesn't help that this woman is a legal American citizen. If she were here illegally, our taxes would probably be paying for her surgery as we speak. But I digress.

This hits very close to home for me, as my mother died from a brain tumor and now my father is too. I am currently dealing with medical expenses of my own, but if there is any way on earth I can help this family I absolutely will. At the very least they will be in my prayers.

DiMur Thanks I have them in my prayers and I am looking at getting this story out there in the hopes that maybe someone somewhere can help them or at least let people know that this is not a single situation. There are people like you that have to deal with this on your own and I am very sorry to hear about your mom and dad. I know that if our government would open their eyes and start taking care of its own citizens first then this woman and people like her and her kids would not have to go through this alone. Then there would be help out there for her. I know that this looks like an isolated situation but it is far from that. There are millions of Americans out there without access to proper medical care.
Someone told me many years ago that one day we all come across an angel in disguise and if you pass the angel up with out really looking then you have lost a part of your self.
I have posted his story on a few other places hoping that someone will get in touch and help them. I know that all prayers are accepted and thank you again.

janetmac - Thank you too.

I think if everyone had been through the kind of painful loss that we have, they would be a lot more sympathetic.

My family did a silent auction for a cousin of mine who also has a brain tumor and has had multiple surgeries (do you think we have enough brain tumors in the family?!?). Maybe that is something to look into for this family too. We found a lot of businesses who were willing to help out, and were able to raise enough money to pay all of his medical bills.

This type of story always gets under your skin.

If it was an illegal, they would be treat the conditions symptoms once in an acute status.

If she was Black, Sharpton and Jackson would already be picketing in front of the hospital and grabbing air time.

If Asian, it would not even matter because they would just go to the community and have the money.

If she is a single mom then where is the outcry from NOW?

Has anyone put this on FOX NEWS as a new topic or their breaking news area at the bottom of their main site?

Alomst sounds like a non-union, white republican female who has nobody screaming for her.

Hi Janet..I fully agree. It is real sad that we will let people from other countries come here and have a free operation or even the amount of money we spend to help other countries. But we can't help our own people living here. Sad world we live in, huh.

Seems to me if you she was a conjoined twin from another country they would. Well, are there any sites or support groups that know of other hospitals in different states that could help her. I am going to post this somewhere. It is sad to see she cannot get help here in Colorado. But Colorado is not a helping state for sure. I now that first hand with these doctors here. Some of them should not be doctors. I pray you can get help and I will inquire as such.

No FOX is not going to make this news because this kid already contacted them and asked for help. They never returned his calls, no one has. It is probably because she is a working class single mother who is not on welfare and can not claim it is a race thing. I was hoping that FOX in Denver would have stood up and taken notice and maybe instead of doing these block parties they could hold a fund raiser for her and help this woman get the treatment she desperately needs. But I don't see that happening, it is too sad of a story and she wasn't a hurricane Katrina victim. It seems that they say they want to help yet their actions show that they don't. I will scream for her and her kids. I wish that there was more I could do. If I had the $176,000 to pay for her surgery I would fly down today and pay for the whole thing.

Thank you I think the more it is posted the better chances this family has of getting help. Maybe someone out there reading this will step up.
RoysBoy - Yes it is very sad and the truth is everyone looks away when it is a child who is asking for help. They think if they don't read it or see it then they can look the other way. It is real sad when we take a look at what the American Society has become when we will go to no ends to help other countries and illegals right here yet we will not even help an American Citizen.

As far as the media goes, it's probably just not newsworthy enough for them. They're only interested in what they think will 'sell'.

Yeah and a single white mom with two young kids who lives in constant pain because our health care system caters to all but her type is just not interesting enough for the "Majority" of Americans.

And I think our media defines 'interesting' by how good it will make their network look.
