I am disgusted, disappointed, and completely opposed to Mayor Hickenlooper's and Councilman Charlie Brown's reactions to Renee Martin singing the "Negro National Anthem" at the recent state of the city address. It is blatantly racist to assume that this version of the National Anthem is controversial, and somehow holds less validity then the more popular mainstream version. Councilman Brown said that he thought Miss Martin was singing a "long introduction to the real version." He also said that he was "mad" and that he "almost walked off the stage." In addition Mayor Hickenlooper said that he was "very disappointed" by Miss Martin and said that he "should've sang the national anthem himself." Both men obviously had a very negative reaction to Miss Martin and the song she sang. However if either men were more educated on their American history they would know that this version of the national anthem was written to celebrate the life and service of one of America's most valued statesman, Abraham Lincoln.

Written in 1899 by brothers John Rosamond Johnson and James Weldon Johnson, the song's proper title is "Lift Every Voice and Sing," but has come to be commonly known as the Negro National Anthem. Since its creation the song has been performed at countless public events, both national and local, and in 1990 (due to it's recognized popularity and patriotic lyrics) the song was officially recorded in the Congressional Record as the official African-American National Hymn. Although subtle, Councilman Brown's attack on the song as not being the "real" version of the national anthem, as well as Mayor Hickenlooper's disappointment in it, demonstrates their blatant disrespect for African-American culture. In addition their reaction demonstrates a degree of racial prejudice within both men, with the way they automatically disapproved of the song without doing any research to learn the songs history, its purpose, or its message. Furthermore Councilman Brown and Mayor Hickenlooper must not have listened to any of the words that Miss Martin was singing, because had they listened to the lyrics they would have heard the patriotic message of the song. Instead they simply viewed the situation as a Black woman (whom they didn't know and obviously didn't respect) disgracing our country's national anthem, with some unknown and un-respected song.

This version of the National Anthem is just as relevant and patriotic as the mainstream version, the problem is that since Black Americans are still considered and treated as second class citizens, mainstream society hasn't taken the time to accept and familiarize themselves with this version of our national anthem. It is extremely disappointing to discover how extremely ignorant city councilman Charlie Brown and Mayor John Hickenlooper are to the history of their own country, and of their fellow African-American citizens. Denver is a city that prides itself on its diversity, and its fair treatment of all its citizens. With this in mind the city should require more sophisticated action from its government officials. Denver's public officials, in addition to its citizens of all races, should be ashamed and outraged with Councilman Brown and Mayor Hickenlooper, and should demand a public apology for their ignorant and disrespectful reaction to this situation.

More importantly both men should apologize to Renee Martin because they wrongly and publicly disrespected her as a citizen, an artist, and a person. I applaud Miss Martin for her courage in giving a diverse and patriotic performance, and I thank her for being willing to take public ridicule in order to showcase the beauty, elegance, and patriotism of one of America's most valued anthems. Her performance makes me proud to say that I am an African-American.

Sorry buddy, but bad taste and disrespect are not acceptable. This was not an act of patriotism, but ones of self-importance and she needs to express her views at the ballot box. No excuse, your dog just will not hunt in this argument.

It may not warrant a response truth1 and gjflash, but I still feel the need to voice an opinion!! What an idiot you are johneh! The National Anthem is not something that can or should be changed! It was written for ALL Americans! Not white ones.... Rene Martin should be ashamed of herself! This little "get together" was for the Mayor, not for you to make a stand on your black power beliefs!

What about this African-American's disrespect for American culture? She was asked to sing our National Anthem (of which there is ONE version), not "Lift Every Voice and Sing". She can sing that on her own time. They should have booted her racist @$$ off the stage!

joneh- what an intellectually dishonest argument. You are a good writer, so I know you're intelligent. I love the song, too, but that was not the point and you know it. If so, she would have discussed it with her employers, and I'm sure they would have been pleased to have her perform both. But that wouldn't have made her "brave", would it have? No, but it would have made her honest. And that's not very attention-getting these days. Now THAT'S a real editorial comment about society, isn't it?

Your view on this is clearly wrong!! I am not falling for the interior motive here! Ms.Maire needs to look in the mirror to find out why she feels so terrible in side.

I am also an American(black ) and life is good and I am dam proud of my Country ,its history (good and bad) and what it stands for today.

There is simply no excuse , today , to play these type of selfish games she is playing. I am also sick of this nonsense that loony white ( and hypercritical) liberals to let slide this EDIT by whacked out African Americans!

I see tru ms. Marie's game and I am not impress !!! It's getting old and tired.

Well its 7-3-08 and I just now have been able sit down and read the responses to my blog. Since I do not have the time, not the desire to answer everybody individually, I will simply touch on a few points that were made. Id88 called me an idiot, gjflash called me racist, and everyone of the 11 people who answered my blog said I was wrong. This doesn't suprise me because after checking all of your bios I can see I have virtually nothing in common with most of the people who answered me. Sure we share such similar values as family, the right to free speech, that every citizen in this country is entitled to the rights written in the constitution, etc. However as people we have nothing in common. First of all majority of the people who answered my blog are conservatives. I feel the conservative agenda has no place in this country. We pride ourselves as a benevolent nation, however the conservatives want to convserve all the wealth this country has. Most conservatives are wealthy, and that is the very reason they are so stingy about paying taxes, and spending money on social programs for the less fortunate. But they will not hesitate to fund wars. Many of the men who answered me were war veterans. Thank you for your service to me and this country. The funny thing is that you will call me unpatriotic because Im against sending you, and every other soldiers into the line of fire for a purpose that has nothing to do with our interests. I thought our leaders learned from Vietnam but it seems they did not because they are still sending our young people oversees to die for nothing. Yo

The song wasn't the point. My point is that you have all these people criticizing her for disrespecting our national heritage, but they have never even listened to the song she sang. By criticizingn her, they also criticize the song. It's a shame that Maerica doesn't knoe all of her history, because if all American's knew the history of America they would have been pleased with Renee for singing that song because it is so fiting for any public event. The words address the truth about our past and all Americans should respect it and be just as happy to hear it.

What the hell does that mean? I know both songs and you would to if you gave half a damn about your fellow Black-American citizens. But you probably don't so you'll never even listen to the song, or google it to research it.
