The following is part of an article on the web today. It clearly states that governments collect more than $200 billion in tobacco taxes every year..... and people wonder why tobacco products are still around! Everyone wants to spend all of this money trying to prevent people from smoking or to help them quit, yet if we could just end the production of cigarettes, wouldn't that do the trick? Of course that can't happen because the government is making too much money to ever consider such a thing. How ridiculous! Spend more money to help people say "no" to something that is still being produced.... Someone PLEASE help me understand the logic behind this!

"NEW YORK - Tobacco use killed 100 million people worldwide in the 20th century and could kill 1 billion people in the 21st unless governments act now to dramatically reduce it, the World Health Organization said in a report Thursday.

Governments around the world collect more than $200 billion in tobacco taxes every year but spend less than one-fifth of 1 percent of that revenue on tobacco control, it said.

"We hold in our hands the solution to the global tobacco epidemic that threatens the lives of 1 billion men, women and children during this century," WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan said in an introduction to the report.

The WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic 2008 calls on all countries to dramatically increase efforts to prevent young people from beginning to smoke, help smokers quit and protect nonsmokers from exposure to second hand smoke.

It urges governments to adopt six "tobacco control policies" — raise taxes and prices of tobacco; ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship; protect people from second hand smoke; warn people about the dangers of tobacco; help those who want to quit smoking; and monitor tobacco use to understand and reverse the epidemic."

I smoke occassionally, but would have no prob with outlawing tabacco.. the thing is, it never will be. The world is driven by needs and wants... whether you can get illegally or legally, you'll get it.

And the governemnt would NEVER consider making it illegal because they make too much money on it! Why are they essentially throwing money away on programs to stop people from doing it?

Yes, the government, and in my opinion people in general, will always follow the flow of money. Slavery was around as much as it was becuase it was very profitable (much like illegals today).
Why do they throw money on anti-smoking ads, etc? Because they have to at least 'appear' to be concerned about our well-being.

I'm a smoker. I don't want to be "helped" to quit by someone who has nothing better to do with their lives than try to run someone else's life. Smoking is good for you. It raises taxes for our country. If the government didn't have my tobacco to tax they would have to tax your toilet paper (that means that you are full of it) and you would pay dearly. Find something constructive to do. Work on your own vices. Those of you who smoke occasionally should tend to your self. I have a huge problem with people who can't mind their own business!

Every person in the world who died last year died because they had been alive prior to death. THE MAJOR CAUSE OF DEATH WORLDWIDE IS LIFE! Without life there can be no death.

Hey jstol3:

For your information, I also smoke. I am minding my own business. My point for this blog is that the government will always have tobacco around because of the taxes. I just want them to stop wasting money on getting people to quit smoking when they could spend that money on something else. If the cigarettes are always going to be here and people are always going to have that option, then the government shouldn't be wasting money on trying to stop people from doing something that the government is continuing to make money on. Get it?

Id88 -
I got your message the first time.
Its MileHigh that I directed my comments to. Sorry for that.
MileHigh can speak for mile high about quitting smoking or that he thinks its bad for him but to make the statement that its ok to outlaw smoking is going one step too far as he presumes to speak about the rights of others.
