Start with the basics!

A real easy song to play and sing is Wicked Game by Chris Issac (sp?) It's three chords and nothing but strumming, and the lead is only a couple of notes.

Another easy song to play (and sing) is High and Dry by Radiohead. Again, it's only 3 chords, real easy strum pattern.

Stick to songs with 3 chords and nothing but strumming and you'll get a good idea of how to put together songs.

Do you know anything about melodic harmonies or standard chord progressions? If not, buy a book and play the different chord progressions in the key of E to start. Guitars are tuned to E, so that's an easy place to start.

Don't forget to sound out the strings as you tune them....you can hum or speak, but training your ears is important.
