You are considering buying a new car and you want to get the one with the best gas mileage. Maybe it's because you're socially aware and want to be kind to the environment. Or maybe it's just because you want to save yourself some money in the long run by paying for a car now that will cost you less in gas on a day-to-day basis. Whatever the reason, gas mileage is the number one thing that you have on your list as you're looking for a new car.

Here are the top ten cars to think about when looking for the best gas mileage for your ride:

Cars with automatic transmission:

  1. Toyota Prius - The Prius gets just over forty-seven miles per gallon on the highway and does even better in the city.
  2. Honda Civic Hybrid - This hybrid car gets somewhere between forty five and fifty miles to the gallon depending on where you're driving it.
  3. Toyota Scion XA - This four speed automatic car gets over thirty miles to the gallon in the city and nearly forty miles to the highway gallon.
  4. Toyota Celica - The Toyota Celica is a popular choice because it's a cute car that still gets almost thirty miles to the gallon in the city and over thirty five miles per gallon for highway driving.

Cars with manual transmission:

  1. Honda Insight - This car gets nearly seventy miles to the gallon on the highway and about sixty miles to the gallon in the city making it the all-time best gas mileage car on this list.
  2. Volkswagen - This brand isn't limited to any one style. The new diesel versions of the Volkswagen Golf, the Volkswagen Jetta and the Volkswagen Beetle all get approximately forty miles to the gallon.
  3. Honda Civic Standard - Although not as good on the gas mileage as its hybrid counterpart, the standard Honda Civic gets over thirty five miles per gallon in the city and almost ten miles per gallon more than that on the highway.
  4. Toyota Echo - The Echo is another cute car, like the Celica, which gets thirty five miles per city gallon and 43 miles per highway gallon.
  5. Toyota Corolla - At forty miles per highway gallon, the Corolla is a sturdy car which holds its own in terms of good gas mileage.
  6. Toyota Scion XB - This car doesn't quite hold up to the standard set by its automatic counterpart but it's not exactly bad on the gas mileage, getting just over thirty miles per gallon in the city and about thirty five miles per highway gallon.

As you can see, the top ten cars that you're looking at when you're looking at getting the best gas mileage are either Hondas or Toyotas (with the exception of the Volkswagen). If you aren't a Honda or Toyota kind of driver, there are certainly other brands which get good gas mileage. Look into the ones that most interest you with an eye towards both highway and city gas mileage.

Recently I had a co-worker try and trade in their 2007 tahoe for a more fuel efficent suv. The dealer ship offered them $8k as a trade-in.!!!!!! Its a $46k vehicle with 25 k miles on it..... So it may not be in your best intrest to tade -in and to just keep it......

I want a two seater convertible Siggy! Which one of the convertible two seaters gets the best gas mileage? Where do you find this info online?

I am interested in only the following: Pontiac Solstice, Toyota Spyder, Saturn Skye, Honda S2000, Mitsubishi Eclipse...

I saw that Smart car today that is suppose to get 60 mpg. You could put a handle on the roof and carry it as a lunch box. It might get great gas millage but it looks like a death trap. Don't know if it comes in a convertible but its a 2 seater.

They just did some crash tests on those Smart cars! Not sure how truthful the results were, but bottom line is if you get t-boned you are done, even in most cars on the road today. I think they are still too small for me right now! Until all of the large trucks and SUV's are off the road anyway!

One thing to also think of is repair costs. Most parts you can get at NAPA, Auto Zone, etc.

However, unless this has changed recently, VW parts are ONLY AVAILABLE AT VW!! The cost will send you to the poor house fast!!!

Hondas, Toyotas? Come on people, what about supporting our country. There are alot of GM's that get better gas mileage than that. The smart cars are definitely a disaster waiting to happen. Unless you want to kill yourself, go for it.

Toyota, Honda & Nissan have proven themselves more reliable than the big 3....

My Tundra was built in Ky. (where American Employees built my truck) It kills me to hear the Ignorant comments in regards to Toyotas.. "Buy American, the job you save might be your own". Have you read the bottoms of your appliances lately? LOL

My appliances are too heavy to lift and read the bottom. lol
You are correct in saying where the foriegn automakers have set up shop here in the US. Ultimately though, the profits go overseas.
We are turning more and more into a global economy but the US automakers are some of the companies still holding onto the old mentality.
I dont care for a global economy but I understand why its is happening and somewhat necessary.
Now stop bothering me while I turn on my Sony TV for a while, then drive to Publix in my Hyundai, then cook on my LG stove.........

The wifes GM came off an American Toyota assembly line. Some of the parts even have Toyota cast on them. Should see all the Mitsubishi and Mazda parts on my ford. The wire harness is labeled made in Mexico. Or the talon we used to have, with the mitsu power plant. There is no such thing as a North American built car anymore.

I give credit to the foreign companies that employ Americans, as I'm more interested in the average joe being employed than a few making millions.

News alert dks........ford IS built in the U.S. It is American. I haven't see any of my GM parts from Toyota. EWW. Signal, don't be an idiot...did I mention anything about appliances? We're talking cars here incase you forgot. Jap crap reminds me of a bunch of people with cameras strapped around their necks taking pictures of the grass......HA!

The wife's front calipers on the Chev have Toyota stamped on them. My ford PCM has japan marked on it, The harness assembled in Mexico. Matter a fact, I recall waiting to get the Mitsubishi distributor shipped from japan, when the car was new and under warranty. The engine was built in Japan and shipped to the US. Just to name a couple things.

Just my opinion, that being built in the US or assembled from foreign components in the US is two different things.

Oh pot to kettle.... Im guessing youve pulled the service bullitens from the net for each of the supposed US auto makers? You know, Mopar, Chevy & Ford.. look at the number of repairs, & recalls. Now compair that to Toyota, Honda & nissan. I again have owned several chevys, fords and mopars and they spent a majority of their lives in the shop. Now The 04 Hybrid Prius has been in the shop for oild changes every 5k and routine service (fluids changed) traded it in in 07 with 75k (they gave me 16k for it) they sold it used the next day. the 07 Hycam has been great.. My 04 tundra has had no issues at all.. I purchased the ext warrenty on the tundra after owning a US made vehicle you need it. Not so on the toyota. ;o)
