Does anyone remember the first rap song they ever heard? The one I remember is "Rapture" by Blondie. Is has come a long way since then. The song was catchy and popular. I don't remember any  bad language, just good clean 80's fun. The first album I remember having a parental warning for language was The Clash  London Calling. I am dating myself, but it's all for a good cause. LOL.

"Rapture" was one of the first I heard as well. Then a few years later came Run DMC, I'm dating myself a bit here too but.... Shortly after Run DMC released "walk This Way" Arrow Smith and Run DMC did the song together creating the first integration of modern "Rap" with Rock & Roll and it was a huge hit. Back then the lyrics were not icky like they are today. I do however remember some parents protesting artists such as Ozzy and KISS. I also remember parents protesting some controversial lyrics in Patty Smith songs like "Rock and Roll "N"ger" and "Sh-t list" and also The Ramones for "Beat on the Brat". While musical lyrics have been a center of controversy for quite some time I do think that todays so called "Rap Artists'" have gotten out of hand. The thug life style and grotesque lyrics are indeed sending the wrong message to todays youth. I certainly do NOT want my daughters growing up thinking that they are "EDIT's" inherently nor do I want my sons growing up thinking that to disrespect a woman is ok or that it is ok to kill people and sell drugs. Maybe if we didn't allow these so called "Artists'" to be so glamorized they might al the very least tone it down.

I have that album and I sure as heck DO NOT consider Rapture a "RAP" song. I would never put any of Blondies music into that classification, to me, it was more along the lines of DISCO, not rap, RAP IS SLOW MOVING whereas Blondies music was HIGH and FULL of ENERGY! I do not consider RAP any type of high energy or fast paced music.

Blondie too me was pretty much Rock & Roll and Disco, NOT RAP!

If you know who you are, what you are called should not bother you. In life you may be called: wife, mother, daughter, student, employee, republican, democrat,pr
etty,fat,ugly,stupid,slutty,brilliant,funny,boring.....
.Pick the ones that apply and dismiss the rest. I believe the words that hurt the most are the ones that come from the people that matter to you most, your friends and family.

I agree sigps. And as an adult I am able to do that but children look to their peers and to what is big in the entertainment industry for acceptance and proper social behavior and so on. While a responsible parent can teach their children and lead by example we cannot always be right over them watching and correcting. And naturally, the more you tell your children not to do something the more they want to do it. So I do believe that to some degree the entertainment industry should be responsible for the message they send out to our youth, while we as parents are responsible for teaching our children right from wrong. I don't agree with censorship but I do think that the way these rap songs and artists are being glamorized should stop. I mean really now come on here. Do you support ebonics or the "thug life"?

Everyone is entitled to choose the music they listen to. When I was in high school I was into new wave and punk with a few songs from other genres. I am sure many people thought The Cure, The Smiths and Depeche Mode were all gloom and doom.I refused to listen to Lionel Ritchie, Michael Jackson and mostly anything mainstream. I WAS trying to be different. Four years in a Catholic (all girls) school was enough for me to know I was deeper than the average "Oh my gosh" Valley Girl teenager. I understand that the people that buy the rap music can identify with it. They go VERY wrong when they make the message their anthem. As the mother of a 17 year old young man, I know that what makes or breaks a child is their friends.

I do not think Rap music is MUSIC. Were is the singing. It is just yelling and very bad vulgar language and gestures. Just my opinion.
