hhhmmmm--- interesting. something to be consideredm yes, but i stand by my position- only the people who use the system should pay for it. to whit: i drive, therefore i am in agreement with paying taxes for our highway system. catch my point?

I Disagree... Knowledge is Power!

I think Education should be available to EVERY CITIZEN of a Democratic Republic Society. For FREE!!! Therein lies the problem... Free Knowledge for all, yet it does cost to teach...

But Schools and materials, and teachers cost money, so who should fit the bill?

What do you get out of educating Others? From purely a selfish position educating others is a smart move on your part. There is only so much one person can do by themselves. Oh' No Here comes the "socialist" perspective: Do you Grow your own food, build your own house, deliver your own mail, study medicine for when you get sick? How would you survive if you break your hip and can not walk and do all of the above?

The fact of the matter is we all depend on others for our survival... I would rather depend on an educated individual than an ignorant fool...

You’re right that education isn’t free, we all pay for it with our tax dollars. The question I have is why do you feel that there is a difference between paying taxes for the highway that you use and education which I can only assume that you feel you don’t use? How did the engineers that designed the freeways get the basic education that enabled them to read the text books that helped to make them engineers? How about the Paramedics and Doctors who help you to heal when you get injured in an accident on the freeways? How about your ability to read the signs which are posted on the side of the freeway? I’m guessing you got that in a public school. Even if you didn’t most of us did. Why are you alright with a massive public investment in infrastructure but you balk at a similar public investment in the people who use it? If it weren’t for public education how many more criminals would be straining our over burdened prisons? How would we demand that the criminals, who have no way to support themselves outside of crime, pay for their incarceration? Can you deny that investing in people early in their lives saves us untold trillions of dollars later? Is that “socialist propaganda” or just common sense?

once again the educated act quite uneducated. not all education comes from a classroom. when i chose to receive a traditional classroom type education as an adult (hint- over the age of 18) i paid for it out of my own pocket. when i was a child, my parents paid, as was their obligation. as far as ignorance being the lack of knowledge, just because a person has the ability to earn a ph.d. from yale does not make them truly educated. akiame-- you keep saying that education should be free. in what way do you mean? no financial cost to anyone? and just because a person does not have a traditional style of education (you know, in a room, in a building, which is what you seem to be insisting is the only way to receive an education) does not make them a lamebrain! i say this again- let the people who use the system pay for it. but then if that did happen, too many people would lose their control over us, wouldn't they? let's see, the state, the counties, the cities, the nea, the uea, the list is too long for here, but if you are truly educated, maybe you will be able to see all of the rest. oh, and one more thing-- how am i benefitted by a person from florida, who gets a degree from yale u. in business administration, and goes to work in georgia?

Since you asked the question about a Floridian attending Yale and working in Georgia, you probably wouldn’t directly benefit much from that unless you were involved in a business relationship with the Georgia firm for which he works. It is conceivable that this person’s expertise, which would at least partially be derived from his Yale education, would help to keep things running smoothly there. So whether you were ordering shipments of ball-bearings from them or they were managing claims for your health insurance, his expertise would influence whether these things were done well.
I did a little research to see if I could show you some concrete examples of how you have benefited from the existence of Yale University and I found some pretty interesting things.
• 4 signers of the Declaration of Independence were Yale graduates
• Other Yale graduates who were influential in the American Revolution include Nathan Hale and Noah Webster
• In 1779 British troops invaded Hew Haven CT, largely in response to support for the revolution at Yale
• The first chemistry class ever taught at an American school happened at Yale in 1802
• The Yale Daily News, founded in 1878, is the oldest college daily newspaper
• The modern game of American Football was developed at Yale by Walter Camp about 1880
• In 1918 the first naval aviator to become an ace was a Yale graduate
• Frisbees were invented at Yale in 1920
• In 1943 Yale was transformed into a military training center, Captain Glen Miller broadcast his band’s weekly concerts from there

As a cornerstone of this nation, education at public expense was created. The government of the first two adminstrations, not wanting to fund such an endeavor put public education on the proverbial back burner.

It took Thomas Jefferson (who was home schooled), as a sitting President to get donations by which their experiment could be proven. He and his 'friends' funded two schools any child ... regardless of ability to pay ... could attend. The Library of Congress sits on the site of one of those schools.

I, personally, do not feel myself wise enough to challenge what the Founding Fathers considered essential.
