I have nothing but good to say re:  My  Mother.

She worked cleaning other peoples homes while us four were in school. when it came time to buy 'school' clothes, we made the trip to Sioux City to a popular store where she could charge clothes for the four of us. In the shoe dept. I found a pair of beige/brown sandals with a sling heel. Thinking they were the coolest shoes God made, when I asked for her to get them, it wasn't in the budget, nor common sense for school apparrel...paying no attention, I went to the shoe clerk, who charged them for me. Nothin was said til we arrived back home some sixty miles away...Guess shoppin with four under age 14 was  busy enuff.

It was an exciting adventure to travel so far, Mom learned to drive when I was 14, so when the well-traveled roads of two way truck/car traffic came...we were warned to lay down on the back seat of the 50 Chevrolet...esp. when an oncoming truck was  to pass us...her hands gripped white on the wheel. Such tricks one plays when young. Not understanding the value of a dollar til I was much older, was a lesson we shoulda learned sooner.

I have a friend whose Mom told him to iron his clothes, so he immediately put them under his mattress. In the morning they were creased where he needed them to be...his scolding came, cause of course, Mom figured out quite quickly, he never got the iron out. that takes the cake...woulda never thought to put my ironing under the mattress to 'flatten' it.
