So recently I have had what I consider the worst customer service experience in my life. I made the mistake of transferring credit card debt into a Capital one card. I accidentally paid one payment 24 hours early and it was applied to the same month. Next month it showed a late fee as a result of not receiving a payment. Spoke with probably 20 people each month since May to resolve this issue. Their response is we cannot change it what we can do as a one time courtesy we can take the late fee off. My point, I didn't make a mistake I have had many credit cards and none of them ever applied it to the same month they would simply show as current. So word to the wise if you have a Capital One credit card and you have not made a mistake I hope you never do. If you have spoken to financial advisors they will forewarn you not to open up with them. Unfortunately for me it was after I already had the account I found out they are the worst. Further, if you ever call you will be transferred to India or wherever it is and then you will finally speak to someone who is fluent in English but coincidentally is in Canada.

You know what is wrong with this country? No one is controlling credit card companies b/c they pay off the big guys like Transunion and Equifax...I think there is something wrong with this country where we depend on credit cards b/c they are revolving accounts hence build our credit...but as soon as you make a tiny mistake your credit is toast. So I say screw credit, screw Capital One I will spend the rest of my life advocating credit card free financial plans and show people that in fact life does go on without them.

If even hundred thousand of Denver residents get rid off their credit cards and pay them off we may not have such a high foreclosure rate. I would not be sad to see Capital one or any other company like Discover go out of business who cares we have too much of everything and it has not moved us foreward rather step closer to financial demise.

Whew that felt good. Just for the record this is my opinion and my frustration. I do pay off my bills monthly and my goal of course with every  other 30 yr someone is to pay off the debt. So I understand if commentary comes back to be negative b/c I placed myself to be in this position, hence I can deal.

The other thing about CapOne is the method in which they report to the bureaus.

They do not report a LIMIT... that is, your credit limit. This is important when it comes to points.

If you have a 1000.00 balance, but no reporting limit, there's no way for the bureaus to score you properly. They don't know whether you're close to max'ing out or not.

If you're going to use a C/C I suggest getting one from a credit union. I like CU of Denver.

There are many factors that effect your score... that's just one, mind you. CapOne may still be good if it happens to be your oldest line of credit.... it's hard to say w/o looking at your credit... but if you have plenty of other lines with history and age, cancelling it wouldn't be so bad.

Thank you Milehighpatriot for your input. I just feel so frustrated as this was not my mistake to begin with. I only had this since December of 2007 so I am not going to loose too much from my credit by canceling. Yeah I heard that as well with the reporting...apparently there is no control as credit card companies pay off the bureaus to report. Thank you for your input I think I will learn to live without credit. It is best to live with knowing that I only have so much to spend each month. Good lesson though.

I think credit is good as long as you remain the 'controller'. You can't let it rule you, or let yourself be at its mercy.

I also don't think you should eliminate it completely from your life because you may come across a time where you do need it; a medical emergency, stranded with no cash, etc.

There is definitely a happy balance. I definitely was left at its mercy, which is why I am able to say it. I abused it and now I'm paying for it.

I don't think you'd hurt your credit that much, if at all if you barely got it in Dec.

Also, did you know that you could get a free report from all three bureaus from www.annualcreditreport.com. (NOT like freecreditreport.com)

AnnualCreditReport.com provides consumers with the secure means to request and obtain a free credit report once every 12 months from each of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies in accordance with the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act).
