(An Open Letter to Irresponsible People)

Dear Sir / Madame,

Let me bring you up to date on the results of your decision not to spay or neuter your pet.

I know your kitty cat loves the great outdoors, loves to play, loves to explore.  But when your precious little furrball gets old enough, the urges of nature take over and next thing you know there is a litter of kittens.

Oh, how cute they are aren't they?

But they grow up.

And in the back of your mind I guess you figure they can fend for themselves.

Well darlin', let me bring you up to date on the pitiful life you are indirectly but still responsible for.

My desk faces the window that looks out over our back yard, and I watched a feral white and black male cat tentatively approach the birdbath for a drink of fresh water.  Because I work with wildlife, I monitor closely what comes into our yard, as we do not want diseases, flea infestations, or any other harms done if they can be prevented.  We were fortunate to have the free-range cats next door move out this last weekend.

But there remains this pitiful tom cat.

I went out to run the cat off but my heart was absolutely sickened when I realized how ill this animal is - his blue eyes looked up at mine, and I recognized what might once have been, and I also recognized the pain this animal has.... His face is half without fur and a raw pink.  He limps.  He has obvious sores and cysts on his body.

He will be dead soon.  Sooner I hope than later... he is in pain.  A quick death would likely be the greatest kindness this animal has ever known.

Unless the animal is rabid, our county has little interest in capturing these animals.  The "pound" is already flooded.  And while euthanizing this cat would be a kindness to him, capturing would involve too many risks, including to human health.

I had to chase him off to protect the animals I am licensed to care for.

But you, you think you love animals.  You do not.  People like you who do not spay or neuter but then let your animal free to roam do not really love animals.  You do not care what kind of life you are setting their unknown offspring up for.  Not your problem.

But you are cold, wicked, and selfish.  And I feel much better for having told you so.

May you one day be reincarnated as a stray.

Sincerely,

Someone who has dedicated her life to animal care

I am going to update this blog on the progress of this poor animal.  If anyone has any suggestions what I can do without jeopardizing our own animals, PLEASE let me know.  I sincerely appreciate it.  I have never yet had to deal with this particular situation, and cannot tell you how disappointed I am in the County's response.

You could have been writing about our old neighbors. At one point she had a brood of 18 unspayed/neutered cats. Our cat-lady of the neighborhood ended up adopting quite a few of them. Yes, she takes good care of her pets. Those she adopted are now fixed and live indoors. But there were still a few around for a few months after she moved out.

My husband found one down by the lake about a month ago. Only the front half was left. I think one of the gators got him? Unless we have a big cat we don't know about prowling the lakeshore at night?

My cat goes outside too. On a Leash!!! (yes she's fixed) Living on this lake, I don't see how anyone lets their cats run free. I let the dog roam our yard, but she stays away from the lake (smart olde dog)

I cannot stand irresponsible pet owners either. It is a huge peeve of mine. My ex-neighbors kids are unruly brats too. I think the two go together? We're darn glad they are gone. Perhaps one year we'll be able to mow the lawn and not smell their lingering bad-habits? At least our dog has had her supply of catbiscuits cut down. eeek! Talk about nasty farts! Dumb olde dog.

You could get a trap and try to catch the cat & have it put down? I feel for ya. I felt for that cat down by the lake too. Heck of a way to go.

If you adopt it, take care of it! Dammit!

Oh, how awful MoonOwl! I am so sorry you had to find that… Can’t you just imagine the fear…

Anyone who knows me knows that I heave to be pretty “het” up to call any one or particular group out, but I DEFY any member of “the other side” of this issue to post here and even TRY to justify not fixing their free-roam pet.

“It’s too expensive.” Really? How you plan on paying for shots, food, and emergency medical care when it is needed?

There are those who argue that animals feel no pain, and are even less inclined to believe they have feelings. For them I recommend reading “The Emotional Lives of Animals.” Even the scientific community is beginning to acknowledge they have been remiss. It is hard for folks who live with animals not to say “I told you so” as each animal clearly has a personality, and will let you know if a paw is injured, or that they love you.

Animal abuse is tied closely with human abuses.

I am reminded of that real “he-man” who tied up a mother possum in a tree and beat her death, her babies falling off of her.

I have seen cars SWERVE TO HIT all kinds of animals, domestic and non, and stayed behind to give aid and find rescue. (I have also observed it is men who have done this…why guys? Can anyone tell us why???? Someone knows these jerks.)

I have cleaned up the messes; left behind by the cruelly and carelessness of others, and am frankly in a damn good position to hold forth. I am not alone. But I am fed up enough to speak.

MoonOwl, welcome to the team.

It is sad and is indicative of many things through out society. The decline of Personal Responsibility for one.

hehehehehehehehe.... If'n them aliens come down to harvest us, Lord help us all if they treat us as we treat our lower forms of life...... ;)

I have what some might call a hobby farm. People seem to think it would be a nice place for their stray cats to live, so they get dropped off and I always find myself caring for them.
We have ended up spaying and nuetering at least a dozen. Some are more ferrel then others, for that type of cat I recommend using a trap. You can try calling the Humaine Society, ASPCA or Animal Control in your county to see if they have traps you can borrow. They normally require a small deposit. Then Animal Control can put the cat down, should be no charge. Tell them your affraid of the cat biting someone that might get them going.

I did not know that. Thank you Louie.

What you do is to be commended. If you are like us, yours is something you do out-of-pocket with no special funding. It is a labor of love. Hats off to you sir, it is a privilege to "meet" you.

Growing up we ended up with cats showing up at the farm... Our neighbor, Dr. Maritn, took them in for fixing and upon return made terrific mousers! They also got fed when the horses got fed. Nice life.

(I know, I know... bad for the mice.) Can't win really.)

Off to the phones... Wish me luck!

I have been close to Florida Boxer Rescue for almost 2 years. The story of Mr. Ruff was so hopeless, but he is the epitome of Rescue Volunteers working and perservering for their cause.
I have adopted 2 boxers and lost one to cancer. I was devastated. Last week I got the yearning again to add to our household with another dog. I found one and will be bringing him home soon. He was turned in with his other roommate because the owner was moving. That really really gets to me. At the animal shelter they said they were busy all day Saturday with people surrendering pets because they are moving or they can't afford them. I don't know how many they turned away because I was afraid to ask. The neighbors next to me have lost their home to foreclosure he is in jail and she is handicapped and moved with her mother. They have a kennel with hunting dogs. There was 30 at one time. I went over there to check and there is still 6 in the pens. No one has fed them. I took the hose and watered them. I called animal control and no one has come out. I don't think they have been fed since Sunday. We will see what happens. I just can't imagine moving away and leaving animals penned up with nothing .
Well, hopefully, the little pug/mix, which I will name Scooter settles in and he will respond with love and affection.
BTW, my husband has 2 traps and he catches ferals when they come around. He takes them over to the animal shelter and they do take them and do what they have to do. He has a card on file there so they just put his number in the computer and log the cat he brought in. He caught

..cont the neighbor's cat about 3 times and kept returning it to them and warning them that it was messing in my flower bed. They did nothing. The 4th time he caught it in our trap (which are always placed in our yards)he took it to the animal shelter and then went to the neighbor and told them. It costs those women about $100 plus neutering fees before they got it back. I think they learned a big lesson.

Nice to meet you too the Bradleys... I am a woman though...Lol "Louie" is my Frenchie male. That is him in my avitar.

Randyloo, I was at work on day and one of my co-workers mentioned the same thing her neighbors moved and left the dog... I had a fit... I asked for the address I was going to go feed the dog and yes everything comes out of my pocket. Anyway, I was a server at Cracker Barrel (many years) and when one of Pascos deputies came in for lunch I told them the story. They took care of it right away. They requested animal control to pick up.
So what I am getting at is PLEASE call the sheriffs office and tell them the dogs are penned in and they are suffering.
They have to do something about it. If you request a patrol car they will send one they have to.
Good luck with yur new addition.

Louie - a she - it's still a privilege! (So hard sometimes to tell with names...kinda like mine - but sometimes my girlie overtones come through real bad.... ugh) And please, typos are about the only thing left "for free" these days! :D

You all have actually been a wealth of information, and as we ar ein semi-demi rural Florida we have been talking and decided to invest in a humane trap of our own - it's apparently the same kind the SPCA has and is available at The Tractor Store. (We didn't have THAT in Pinellas!)

Bless your heart Randyloo - I bet you fall in love with those boxers, every new furry face that comes in! Early congratulations on your new baby!

I have a dog and had 2 cats.

Boomer (the dog) is neutered. Gizmo (satan cat) is spayed but my baby Sushi...I took her to the vet to get spayed and she didn't make it through the anesthesia. She was the result of a litter of feral cats and THE BEST kitty anyone could ask for. I miss her. The other kittens were adopted and the mom was spayed by her new family that adopted her a few houses down.

I believe the SPCA is still lending out human traps. Call and ask, once the cat is caught simply bring him in the cage down to the SPCA.

Of course they will probably put him to sleep given the condition you described, unless you wanted to take him back.

I wouldn't make him an indoor cat if you decide to neuter him and take him back. He probably wouldn't do very well. It's also possible he's got FIV the feline version of AIDS. If so, he's in for a rough end. My neighbor took care of a stray.

Vet trips, shots, neutered ect. The cat only lived 4 years after she started this and died of FIV the last 6 mos he was sooo lethargic she found him lying in a drain one morning and rushed him to the vet. They had to put him down.

Almost EVERY cat I have EVER owned has been a stray including the one I have now. My newest addition I found last November and my heart just melted. He was only two months old when he found us and he has NOW been fixed BUT NEVER goes out. That is because there are several cats that our neighbours own that don't seem to know how to keep THEIR cats in THEIR yard. Now I have cat fights every day and my poor kitten scared to pieces everytime this starts up.My other cats, both strays, lived long lives because they were loved and taken cared of. They were my babies. When I lost them I cried for days. Now my new kitten is the ONLY cat we have been able to get our autistic son to touch, period! Maybe if you can get this cat to go into a cage with a swing down door you might be able to catch him and at least maybe they could put the poor fella out of his misery. Sounds like he has pretty much had it and this would tear my heart out. I hate to see anything suffer.

UPDATE: Still no kitty sighting. I'm petty sure he is gone over the Rainbow Bridge by now. He was really in that bad of shape.

People, PLEASE: Spay or Neuter or DON'T bring them home with you.

The stories related here are stories of strength and survival and doing right and falling in love and CARING - by people who DO love animals.

Please be responsible. Please.

Im so sorry you haven't seen your kitty BUT maybe this is a good thing. ANYTHING that looks like it is suffering that bad would tear my heart out in a minute. Hopefully this poor animal is no longer suffering and is finally at peace.Growing up on a farm like I did I know all about people that just threw their unwanted animals away like their garbage. I was always the kid that found them and my mom could never tell me no. With the exception of the kittens that were born on the farm EVERY cat I ever owned was a stray including my babay that I found right after I first got married in 1980 and the other kitten that a friend gave me that she found wandering around a Jiffy food store. That's how he got his name. Both of my babies lived until they were about 10 -12 years old. I cried for days when I lost them. People that have no heart for animals disgust me. I JUST DON'T GET IT. IT IS A LIVING BREATHING CREATURE. The litten we have nowIvory, has been fixed and NEVER, EVER goes out. NEVER will either. MEAN people and cars are the reason. AND STRAYS!!! Stupid people!!

We have watched Good Day Tampa Bay and Fox News 13 since it became Fox many, many years ago. I've lived on this coast since 1982 but hail from Horse Country, TN. In RL I not only run two websites, but am researching a compilation work for publication (I can disappear for days in my books!) I work with wildlife (naturally Cynthia Smoot is one of my fave journalists!) and I like to participate in the "wildlife" here on the Blogs - a little human interaction is a refreshing change on occasion.
