Fort Collins considers allowing backyard chickens

FORT COLLINS — The Fort Collins city council is considering changing the law to allow more people to keep chickens in their backyards.

Currently up to six chickens are allowed per household in three of the city’s zoning districts.

The proposal up for a vote Tuesday would allow them in all districts with some restrictions.

The chickens would have to be kept in a shelter safe from predators overnight.

The chickens would have to be kept at least 15 feet from neighboring properties.

Only hens would be allowed. Roosters are banned in Fort Collins because they are noisy.

That’s the case in other cities along the Front Range that allow people to have chickens.

lol! im laughing thinking about people predators needing distance so they cannot
reach through and wring their necks.

in my village backyards back up to county side -- mountain cat will eat the chicken by morning fence or no fence.

i like my chicken fried toatie accompanied by a little glass of prosecco. i think front range theft crime is going to bounce ski high..yummo!

I gotta agree with that. Any chicken in my neighborhood is gonna be dinner! If the backyard chicken farmers don't like it, then they can go home.

are there no dogs, chickens smell bad, etc.dogs arent the only predators that like chickens,I LOVE chickens.
